[SPEC] meaning of glassworks

Just a quick bit of spec on the meaning of the "glassworks." I think this is refering to the covenant glassing of the colony worlds. The people counting cards at the casino are making fun of all the immigrants who came to Earth on student visas to try to escape the covenant.

At least thats what it sounds like.

If I had to guess, I'd say you were right.

Man... That's harsh. No wonder Kamal rolled so easy at the idea of stringing them along.

Yeah, I'm surprised Kamal reactly so calmly to them, of course. Tagging them along like he did was a nice little act of vengeance. It actually makes me think though, in the first strike book it's mentioned that the UNSC propaganda machine is very succesful in making the poeple of earth ignorant of how close the covenant are to earth. The unfortunate side effect of this is the residents of earth are a little arrogant to the people of the "glassworks", so covenant hitting earth in a very short time is going to be a rude shock for some of these people. Actually, that puts another twist on kamal's situation...Kamal wants to bring his family here because he thinks earth is safe. If Coral still stands, his family is safer there than Kamal is on earth. Ouch.

To expand it further, I'd say that this is brought on not only by the immigrants, but the fact that Earth was probably already overpopulated to begin with, and suddenly is being flooded with the other humans who are desperate to survive. The "refuse" (refugees) often do exceedingly well in society in order to bring their families to the inner colonies (or Earth in this case). Like Kamal, they may do great in school in order to become doctors so they can get family off their planet on some governmental law waiver. Or, they may do like Sophie and cling to the connected. What this means is that there is much less opportunity for the average joe that was already on Earth. The fact that there is class-ism all the way up to the level of Stanford University (read: rich/well-connected/or successful-types) students suggests that the normal Earth public is very unhappy with the influx of human survivors.

Then again Sophia's reasons may not be the same as the average refugee. Time will (hopefully) tell.
