Whoever has been sending out Axons for us to enhottenate has been using the payphones as a means of identifying targets for the Covenant. (Of course, I think it's highly unfair for bungie to imply that only the north american continant receives special lubbins from the Covenant...)

[/SPEC]

LOL... not to mention, Verizon might not appreciate the negative PR resulting from having every one of their (and ONLY their) phone booths bombed by the Covies.

This topic has been discussing the physical axon location pattern and it has been regularly SPEC'd that the payphones are all verizon. This is not true, here in San Francisco, the payphones are largely SBC. Bang Head

Still, I think that you're right, the telco's will not be happy finding out that Bungie has planned for the Covenent to put mushroom clouds over their payphones.

Of course Laughing , there's always the Kamal quote:

Kamal in uvular_implants (transcript|wave) wrote:
Sofia: Payphone?
Kamal: Old decrepit hardware, half of em don't work, bad GPS.

I'm a little lost here. Why almost all of you are assuming Perdita is SP? Any reference? links to explaining threads? Smile

I'm more convinced SP is actually talking about Mellissa than herself. Operator is the one that had childhood memories (later to be taken away, like a replaced thumb). SP didn't even know how to speak in english in the beginning. Besides SP seems to be more wise than we give credence to her. One thing that seems to be quite relevant of her last 404 is this:

SP wrote:
It's nice to think there is a world beside this one where I am all alone in buzzing, flickering darkness.

This seems to imply (at least for me) that SP wasn't much of a real person (or simply wasn't human) before being an AI. (I subscribe to the theory of she being Forerunner)

Also she seems to not be very worried about seeing her own reflection nor gives any reference to doing something to find her own past while Mellissa and Durga at least seem to try to find out.

Yeah, I actually agree with just about everything you said, but that's also been the more prevalent [spec] around here I believe. So I thought it would be fun to kick around a few other perspectives for awhile, just to try them out, get a new look, think outside the box, etc.

Anyway, when it comes right down to it, though, I think you're right. I believe Perdita is more an allusion to Melissa than to SP, though I don't know about the physical body part. I think Melissa has been a shipboard AI for quite a while, so maybe the "transfiguration" is referring more to the fact that she was re-built by SPDR using our 2004 networking resources and is therefore "not the AI she used to be."

Also, the Flea seems to parallel the Clockwork Rat. Since the Flea is Melissa's cohort and the Clockwork Rat is Perdita's, it does seem to follow that Perdita alludes to Melissa.

My apologies, sadly I have been unable to make it to an actual axon so all I know about them comes from these forums. Dunce

there's that other thread there, the SP=Kamal's sis.... i think this might be trout from that... but, i couldn't quite find the exact wording of what i'm thinking

SP says she's OLDER than Mellissa (queen)
the SP was locked away from the queen
one of Melissa's memories is of doctors approaching her with needles and scalpels.... afterwords, she says "whoah, where did THAT come from"... a repressed memory
the SP was released somehow
the SP tells a story of a little girl lost, and it upsets her so much that she "has to go"

the SP is Melissa's original, human core (Esmi? Yasmin?)... ONI locked her away from Mel because she couldn't cope with her memories of home and family... when Mel gets repaired by spdr, SP is released and Mel goes a little nuts when strange cildhood memories come to surface

looking for the "lost" girls

As we have noted, this story is full of "lost" girls-- everywhere we look there is another one. I know Dana isn't really "lost" but she is running from something as she seeks for something else and she wants to be unknown. Smile

We could say who we know isn't Perdita - all the male characters, the Pious Flea, and the SPDR ( unless she is trying to make a comeback behind the scenes.)

That leaves:

Jan
Sophia
Kamal's sister
Durga
Melissa
the Sleeping Princess

less likely:
Jersey's straying Mom
Kamal's Mom
Sophia's Mom
Kamal's first date who ran away after the parasite discussion
female characters from the early memories of the Operator - Greene and Arrents (sp?)
Aiden's other girl

and, the always present-- but to me unlikely possibility--
a yet unknown character

I still think it is one of the ai's but I don't know which one.

I know this has been discussed elsewhere and I'm venturing dangerously into Trout territory, but since the topic has resurfaced on this thread, I'll risk it:

The Sleeping Princess is an unreliable narrator.

First she says:

The Sleeping Princess wrote:
What a funny way
you talk, old fashioned, but now
I can do it too!

(Source: http://ilb.extrasonic.com/index.php/Phase_3_Corrupted_Images )

Then she says:

The Sleeping Princess wrote:
I'm older than the Flea and I'm older than the Queen and it was bad day for them when the coffin cracked and I got out because I'm never going back there again.

(Source: http://ilb.extrasonic.com/index.php/September_3_404_page )

How can English be "old fashioned" and yet she's "older than the Queen"?

The SP's a bit shady. I'm not so sure what her nature is.

I don't wanna derail this anymore but just to answer this:

Sorry from bringing Haloverse into this but actually there's a reference to a comment by 343 GS in the library level in Halo that roughly says "How curious that you use such quite primitive weapons" referring to MasterChief using proyectile weapons instead of plasma or laser weapons like Covenant or Forerunner. GS, being Forerunner, is quite ancient, therefore older than any human. Still he's not "old fashioned" like humans are.

Well, I'll cross the line and jump feet-first into a big ol' pool full o' trout: I still believe that, when the Sleeping Princess talked about the "funny way you talk" being "old fashioned," she was referring not to the English language but to haiku. Further explanation here, to save on bandwidth. Mr. Green

Also, keeping in mind that the SP is from the future and has somehow ended up in our time, our English probably does seem old-fashioned, the sameway Shakespeare's English seems old-fashioned to us now.

Also you gave me another reason to believe SP not being a human AI. That she refers to English as being "old fashioned" can't be a reference to our language being old fashioned compared to future's english since the english we hear through the recordings is pretty standart and there's no unusual wording or too much slang (comparing it to other futuristic novels like Gibson's Neuromancer).

While I agree the stuff in the story about tying the balloons to comm. kiosks does seem to mesh with Perdita=Melissa, I don't believe the reflection stuff does. Recall from an earlier 404:
The Sleeping Princess wrote:
But just then I saw that on the wall next to her, the Queen had hung a HUGE mirror

If the queen put the mirror in the tower, then it certainly doesn't seem like she's making any effort to avoid seeing her reflection.

i think "old fashioned" might mean that we still send text emails over TCP/IP... in the future everyone has digital "chatter" phones and comunicates with computers through voice interfaces

she just needed to learn how to use our "old fashioned" communications system

I think CoffeeJedi hit it on the head...remember, she was in a completely new system, and didn't even know the right protocols to send data. English probably was not what she was referring to.

As to the assumption that Perdita is SP...I think it's very strongly implied. Why is SP telling the story? To make herself feel better...it's a psychological exercise. Why would someone perform a psychological exercise on someone else? And why does she have such a personal investment in the story ("And that's the end. The end. The end. I'm sorry. I wanted to make the story come out happy, but it didn't. They don't sometimes. I think I need to go now. ")? Because it's her story, an allusion to her past, and she just doesn't want to admit it.

My theory? Given the nature of the story, I agree with those who think it represents a child being taken from her parents and turned into an AI. I don't have Halo: The Fall of Reach on me, but I seem to remember reading that human-based AI's like Cortana are actually created by using a human brain to begin with, but gradually the brain is somehow consumed by electronic equivalents of neuron (someone please verify this). We only know of one child to whom this happened, and that is Kamal's sister, so I think it's either her or a new character. If it is her, it means that she must have failed the Spartan physical augmentation process without actually dying, and thus ended up serving in a different manner, in a similar fashion to John-117's squadmate Fahyad.

We'll see. I'm looking forward to more information!

Edit: Oh, and yeah, I found myself shivering at the end of the story. Any here seen "City of Lost Children"? Yeah...it's like that.
