Thoughts on "reflection"

Well, I just have some disparate thoughts and observations that maybe someone can make some sense out of.

Regarding all the references to reflections. We have Durga, who mentions that she is "reflected", and that she can't look at herself ("I can't look at myself, I bounce away"). We have Melissa, who in some metaphorical sense has a huge mirror in her tower. Then there's Perdita, who loves to spend hours preening herself in front of a mirror.

In Perdita's story, she is transformed into a machine. The story ends with Perdita looking at her reflection and seeing what she had become.

In my opinion, this isn't just an allegory of the relationship between the Pious Flea and Melissa, but also is an allegory of creation of Melissa. It's been spec'd that Kamal's sister forms the basis of the Durga A.I., and the the new wav files seem to lend credence to this (see brain_ninjas).

So, my point after all this rambling: If Melissa is the reflection of a real person upon a computer AI, p erhaps Perdita's story is suggesting that the discovery of an AI's real-world counterpart would have disastrous consequences. Any thoughts?

ps: I don't know if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but Perdita is derived from the latin word "perditus", meaning lost.

The only problem with that is that Cortana (a character in Halo and the Halo novels) is an AI that was 'programmed' using Dr. Hasley's (another halo charater) flash cloned brain. I know that Dr. Hasley and Cortana came in contact multiple times and I believe that Cortana was aware of the fact that she was made from Dr. Hasley's brain. I'll have to go back and re-read to be absolutely positive, but I'm 90% sure that it wouldn't cause a problem.

Any other halo buffs that could prove me right/wrong?

I can't provide page reference, but I think your recollection is accurate. It's definitely true that Cortana was spawned from Dr Hasley. It's also true that the good Dr. and Cortana met several times.

They worked closely together, in fact, prior to Cortana's assignment to the MC.

Good stuff.... I'm not a very knowledgable of the Halo universe beyond the game, so this clears things up a bit. So, I guess that shoots down that theory. Perhaps I should stick to answering payphones.

First interaction of Dr. Halsey and Cortana is in Halo: FoR page 233

No way nobodyman, everyone's spec is important wether proven right or wrong. With out some of the wrong stuff, we'd never be able to narrow it down to what's correct...

So post away, as long as it's on subject no spec is wasted...

Some people place a high value on "always being right." The point of SPEC isn't to be "right" but instead to provide an idea that someone else in the game can use to further the story.

Sometimes there are holes in your SPEC and it gets discarded. Sometimes it needs to be amended. Sometimes your SPEC is complete by itself.

By all means continue to SPEC. We like -> ideas = good. Very Happy

Edit: spelling mistake
