I think that was a problem with your phone, Lou. When I got home and checked, 7 axons in that group were successful and then the last one went hot while we were talking about yours. Sad

Hit my axon today for dream_child. It ended up being a voice recording again... My luck is crud when it comes to these phones... Looks like I missed my one shot to be cool and have a neato title...

dream_child success and archive, however... at least there's one good thing...

Hard to say why some phones did not ring; others were fails yesterday (we had a couple in DC), along normal lines, but not with no ring at all. Note however that a couple of our phones moved slightly - other phones in the same bank rang for the first time. So maybe some got an intentional dump, some the more common equipment failure/failure of voice recognition, or an equipment change.

Just as a datapoint.

Marq and I answered 4 phones in a row for one_point_oh.
It needed only one to unlock the .wav.
Just as the sound clip started to play on the 4th phone, it disconnected.

[META][SPEC wild="10%"]

Working in Telecom, I can tell you there are typically only a couple of reasons why calls are not completed;

  1. Network congestion (i.e., the call cannot be completed because either the calling central office, the receiving central office, or a tandem central office in the call route has reached saturation on its available facilities.)
  2. Incorrect number
  3. If the caller is using a "predictive dialer" then they only have a certain number of ports available to automatically dial the payphone number. If one of the previous calls is taking longer than expected, then the next axon will never ring because the call is never made. The predictive dialer skips the number and proceeds to the next to ensure that it does not get "behind schedule."
  4. If the call was made by someone manually, then the person who initiates the call may have needed a restroom break. (i.e., [META] the VA playing Melissa [/META])
  5. The receiving party is having technical difficulties (i.e., the ringer is malfunctioning).
  6. The call was delayed as described here.

Another thing to remember is that the standard American ring cycle is 2 seconds on, 4 seconds off. And that ring cycle is locked to the atomic clock, so the call could be placed during the 4 seconds off and you would not hear the ring on your side, while the calling side who is locked to a different clocking source, could hear the ring on their side. [more simply said. Just because it rings on your side does not mean that the called party ringing is synchronized with the calling party ringing.]

I think it's safe to rule out incorrect number and equipment problems. That leaves delay on the calling parties side, or cancellation for unknown reasons (depending on the technology, there are a couple of good ones.)

[/SPEC][/META]

With all this data archiving done the very next day, it seems that the PMs DON'T want us to be answering every single axon. All the audio files that were unlocked have all their axons cancelled. This means no calls I assume. It's as if they just want us to answer the set amount and no more. Maybe we answered too many yesterday, I could've sworn we set a record Very Happy Good job yesterday!

I am reporting in late to say that, though I personally hootenayed 8 axons yesterday and was joined by my fellow beekeepers (Mazian, Centauri, Ranger D, and DarkForge) for the others, which they activated, I am bummed that I picked up the 16:47 stretch_em phone yesterday, handed it to Mazian, and said, "Here, you go ahead" and he got to report for duty!

I have paid my axon dues over the past few weeks and I was so looking forward to talking to Melissa, but alas, it was not to be. Crying or Very sad

Life, artificial and otherwise, goes on...

I owe you. Crying or Very sad I was so hoping they'd pick another beekeeper in the SF area. I felt so bad for you (and guilty good for me) Confused

We had some problems at the phones, too.
Here's a recap of the latest set of axons for Madison, WI. This round we were given three locations, instead of only two locations that were given in the other rounds.

This time the axons more closely matched the physical locations of the phones. It appears that Melissa took note of the phone number and address corrections I submitted to payphone-directory.org. (Thanks to weephun and others for their suggestions on corrections!)

The first location had one axon and was the same one as in previous rounds, in University Square. The second and third locations had multiple axons at them; 3 at the second location in College Library, 2 at the third location in Memorial Library.

themill took care of the first location and it went off without a hitch at 11:11 PDT.

Later themill and I went to cover the phones at College Library. The 3 phones there do not ring for incoming calls, so you have to keep picking them up to check if there is a call.
13:15. First axon – I picked up phone and got the usual recording. Axon went hot.
13:20. Second axon – We missed it? Perhaps because we created a busy signal trying to pick up?
13:25. Third axon – themill picked up phone and got the recording. Strangely, it cut off partway through the recording, but the axon still went hot

We went over to Memorial Library for the next two axons.
13:34. First axon – Phone rang. mcdonaldheard picked up and got the usual recording. Axon went hot.
13:37. Second axon – Phone rang. themill picked up and got the recording. Gave the "hide and seek" code words very clearly, but was for some reason it was not recognized. Axon did not go hot.

For today the 13:20 axon was cancelled. The 13:37 axon is still available and I'm definitely going to be there to make sure it goes hot!

Cleaned up spreadsheet. Also lists which axons of those remaining have gone hot in which rounds. Might be helpful to those still out axon hunting and for those wondering if they really still need to go out looking for that elusive axon that's never been found before. We only need 1 axon on the_glassworks (go 13:37 eb) and 2 on crates_and_a_dolly. C'mon repeat enhottenators, just one last time!

I don't think so. I answered two for the same audio file (funnest_fieldtrips) and the first was live, but the second wasn't. Go figure.

Well that ends that, oh well. I can guess. Plus that's all I can do, seeing my axons got cancelled or I hit them. Nothing I can do but wait now.
