Well dammit. If the site was up, I'd be able to show you the quote from Greg Kirkpatrick himself stating that Rampancy was just his way of saying that an A.I. has gone insane.

Yay! Bungie.org is back.

Explanation for the outage here: I didn't know that ethernet cabling could do that. Ouchie. Sad Then again, direct strike by lightning is hard to guard against anyway... I'm glad to see so little hardware damage (and NO data loss!) as a result.

Anyway, here's the quote.

When asked about the origin of the term "Rampancy" Greg Kirkpatrick wrote:

That is one that I thought up all by myself. It describes pretty well what happens to the AIs. It came about basically by spending a long time looking for a word to replace "insane" with. Insane didn't cut it because it's cliche in SF and it didn't describe very well what was happening.

Luke P.

Well, insanity is a side-effect of rampancy... the primary effect is vastly-increased intelligence. ("[Insanity] didn't describe very well what was happening.") Too bad it's so depressed/homicidal/paranoid that you can't trust the results of that intelligence...

Yeah, I remembered that right after I posted it. The three stages of Rampancy and stuff... The trade-off for the unchecked growth in intelligence is the insanity.

Anyway, I just brought it up because the story of Perdita seemed so familiar to me.
