There was this old french movie about a little boy and his red baloon. Maybe Dana was scared of being up, uop and away, flying out of control?

Sure. It's on the Fireflies wiki over here

or here:

All the King's horses and all the King's men... well, you know. Hopeless. The Queen, on the other hand, just put her scrambled transmissions together again.

Now we can listen to the Operator's broken-up audio files in their original order — compliments of the Sleeping Princess, who found 'em for us while the Queen was fussing over her axons.

And that's not all the Sleeping Princess found. Apparently, the Operator has been holding out on us... keeping a secret stash of transmissions. Intercepted communications she doesn't trust us to hear yet. But for some reason, the Sleeping Princess wants us to have them now. A dozen puzzles later, we've got 'em — and for now, we know more than the Operator thinks we do.

In other news: Ming tian jian, China!

After 3 weeks, Shanghai felt... familiar. Time to be lost again.

Where to? A friend of mine once said that Shibuya Crossing was the only place on earth his invisible superpowers worked. I always remembered that. So, off I went to become an anonymous speck in Tokyo. I landed at Narita Airport on Sunday.

Something kind of funny happened during the flight. The guy sitting next to me on the plane had a sketchbook and some colored pencils with him — I noticed this when I nosily started watching over his shoulder. (Yeah, I know, bad habit.) Then I completely freaked him out by yelping not very quietly and clutching his arm—yes, his arm!—when I realized what he was drawing. It was a picture of girl holding a bunch of balloons. When he pulled out the red pencil to start coloring them in, I almost lost it. (Ridiculous, I know.) Then I had to try to explain to him why red balloons made me so jumpy. I don't think he quite got it. But I had to tell you guys the story — because I knew you'd understand perfectly.

It's awfully nice to have so many allies out there who understand perfectly.

The main character, Perdita, in the Sleeping Princess' story has a red balloon. I even believe the story says she loves red balloons.

I have the book.

We used to watch the movie when inclement weather would keep us indoors during recesses and lunches in grade school. We also watched Free to be You and Me. Smile

Cirque du Soleil's Quidam show had elements of The Red Balloon in it.

When I see 'Red Balloon' the first thing that I think of is the song, 99 Red Balloons.

I was going to say "What's this got to do with the price of fish?" but, thinking about it, Dana's blog could be hinting to us that the girl with her red balloons is more important than we had thought, and telling us to look again at that allegory.

I'm not convinced on this as Dana's blog has rarely told us anything new, merely confirmed what we knew... her role in-game is quite a strange one, isn't it! (Community Liaison, it would be called elsewhere.)

Anyway, red balloons - as already said elsewhere, I believe - suggest Winnie the Pooh to me Smile

That would be here.
Very Happy

And that excerpt was mailed to her around the time it was posted here.

Winnie uses ballons to sneak up on Bees to take their honey... But in the story Perdita uses them to make sure people can find her... So I'm not sure if there's actually a connection there.

Though it certainly is interesting.

I don't think there is a connection beyond the use of an obviously fairly striking motif. It seems that red balloons crop up a lot. Not sure how much we can draw from such a common theme, yet...

[OT]
99 Red Balloons by Nena (heh, not relevant, but it goes to show that all things balloon related are not in-game in some way)

perhaps I am looking too deeply

I am sure everyone agrees it is no accident that the balloons were "RED"... but what can red mean as a thematic device? Here are a few things I found...
Red is supposedly the first color percieved by Man
Neolithic hunter peoples considered red to be the most important color endowed with life-giving powers and thus placed red ochre into graves of their deceased
Protective powers of the color red against evil influence were common belief
warriors painted their axes and spear-catapults red to endow the weapons with magic powers.
Roman gladiators drank blood of their dying adversaries to take over their strength
Israelites in biblical times painted their doorframes in red blood to scare demons.
Red in ancient Egypt was the color of the desert and of the destructive god Seth who inpersonated the Evil
"Making red" was synonymous with killing someone, evil doings were refered to as "red affairs".
OK, I apologize for the load of "red" info... I thought there might be something that could prove useful.

The wierdest thing was with me and a friend going to see our favorite local OC band in rehearsal, Mollystongue, and them doing this wierd version in a Hitler accent (the other version is a Willy Wonka accent). It just kept getting funnier every second, we both ended up on the floor laughing mucho...
