Florida members update

I just spoke to Diandra, who is in the middle of the hurricane right now. She's hanging in there. She said it sucks, but her house is pulling through okay. She asked me to post something for her to let everyone know she's in one piece.

I've got all you Florida people in my prayers!

Everything's fine here, the worst of the hurricane will miss us, as long as it turns more north, like it's supposed too. If Frances keeps going west, we'll get a direct hit. Still have power and phones or I wouldn't be up at 3am posting this. I'd be up at 3am sitting in the dark. Wink

The weather people are saying our worst time will be later today, lots of wind and rain. But we are on the south side which is the best side to be on in a major storm.

I hope all of the floridians are well and safe.

It's actually relatively mild, but I think you can almost surf on my little lake.

I'll let you know how that works out. Very Happy

If you can, now is the best time to take one of those airboat tours on the Okeechobee, or a kayak trip on the Okefenokee. After a big storm like this, the swamps are really beautiful.

I never ever want to go through something like that again.

Frances was the slowest moving storm Evah! She pounded Palm Beach and parts north for over a day, most hurricanes I have experienced were usually here and past within 12 hours or less. It is more than a week after the storm, there are still people without power, still massive piles of tree and other debris piled at the curb, still more trees that need to be cut down or trimmed.

As for me, our house took a pounding but survived intact with all its shingles. Most of the surrounding area there are a lot of houses missing anywhere from a few shingles to the whole roof.

Power: went out Friday night, came back on Sunday night, went back out monday morning as more transformers blew. We were without power until Thursday evening. There are still pockets in Palm Beach that are without power, and a good many in other couties as well.

Telephones: our next door neighbor lost his after the storm while he tried to trim the trees. That is the one small thing I a thankful for, our telephene stayed connected, but my brother's cellular had problems finding a tower to connect with.

Water: we had a couple of line breaks in the town we get ours from so were on boil water until Friday. Thank goodness we filled as many bottles as we did before the storm.

Food: we had lots of little things to eat, but we had to toss a lot of things in the freezer (meat, fish etc.) on Tuesday as things were defrosted. We had lots of cereal, ramen noodles, etc. so we didn't starve.

Ice was a premium after the storm, even after the supermarkets were opening up, at first they only had non perishable things (canned goods, cereal) no bread, no fozen foods (no power either), no dairy. Even after they had their power restored, ice was confisated for the emergency and handed out by the red cross and others at distribution points.

We still have most of the hurricane shutters over our windows, at first that was due to Ivan. In the area, only about 30% have taken down their shutters, and even most of these have left the coverings near the windows just in case. Jeanne is looking like it may come this way.

Second Verse Same As the First

second verse same as the first...

Jeanne hit the Florida coast 2 miles from where Frances did. Lots of power outages. Lots of buildings that survived Frances with minor damage had the holes made bigger by Jeanne. More trees down, more flodding, more roof damage. All 167 schools in Palm Beach County had some damage, ranging from minor leaks to structual damage. The garbage company did not get to all streets at least once to pick up debris from Frances before Jeanne hit (which they had promised) - however we got lucky, most of it stayed on the ground or got pushed a few feet. They finally got to my house on Monday, three weeks after Frances hit. There are a number of shoreline roads that will need major work done before they are going to be able to take traffic.

There are a lot of condos and homes on the barrier islands that are filled with sand, at least 4 or 5 feet worth.

We had left our shutters on after Frances, so we didn't have to rush to put them back up. They are still up now, we have only opened a few windows to let some light inside.

Everyone around here is suffering from Adrenaline fatigue, there were people who evacuated for Frances who decided to sit it out at home this time. For some, they were ok, for others, they had to scramble to higher ground when the water innundated their home.

Traffic lights are broken in many intersections (we had just had most of them fixed right before the second storm), there have been a number of accidents as people have forgotten to treat each as a 4 way stop.

We are now looking into getting a generator to have on hand in the future.

Glad to hear that you're ok, same here. Just alot of wind damage, we got hardly any rain, what's flooding now is the sheet flow. I was really worried when they finally said that it was coming in the same place as Frances, I know we couldn't have taken another hit so soon after Charley. Just be careful, everyone over here is totally storm-weary and tempers tend to flare.
