I had a live conversation at the 13:18 axon. I said my name was Adam and my rank was Lieutenant. Scared the crap out of me.

Well, 15:25 was definitely live. You can tell since the axon is not hot, I suppose. Two hings I note are that I answered that axon last week (though not on the first day), and it is at the same time and location as it was the week before. Perhaps it would be good to check against which times/locs were unchanged.

Two things.

First, unless the sound quality is *really* bad, there is a distinct difference in the way the live call sounds. Every report we've had of strangers picking up the calls in previous weeks, they were able to tell it was a recording. If you've picked up any of these phone calls before, you should be able to tell the difference in the sound.

Second, the script is different after the first few words. Also, you will get questions to which there are no set answers and responses to those answers. (e.g. vortech's someone's favorite game was "football," and Melissa reportedly acknowledged the "football" response. )

Although all six positions today are filled, we have no idea if there will be more tomorrow or next week. So be prepared for anything when you go axon hunting.

UPDATE: I don't know if there's any way to tell in advance which calls will be live. I was expecting it simply because mine was shortly on the heels of xnbomb's report; but then once I got to Union Station with Chappy and Cortana, we were expecting at least one out of ten and got no live calls.

Then Chappy got a live call at a later axon.

I can not yet detect a rhyme or reason. I think the one thing we seem to know is that Melissa cannot make a live call too closely on the heels of another since each takes a certain amount of time to complete.

Telling them apart while on the phone seems easy emough... I think CH meant that we need to determine if a call is live or not before the fact... It is a more relevant question.

yes, the sound was much clearer than on the other axons i have lit, but kudos to the actress, because for the whole conversation i was thinking "this is a really awesome Turing test. it repeated my name, it called me sargeant. this is cool." i wasn't until later i considered the expense of developing that kind of interface versus hiring an actress that i realized i must have been talking to the real Melissa. tres cool.

That can't be. Since my axon for 14:27 is hot, maybe it's random. I mean, I answered two axons for that section, 14:27 and 14:45. The first was LIVE Melissa, and the second was a recording. Also, the voices sounded slightly different, like maybe a different room in which the recording was done. I get the feeling that it was a real person with a slightly digitized voice...

*a note* Also, since I seem to be seeing a lot more of us who answered live calls who are not on the recipe 1 list, I wonder where the full list of officers is? So far, all I know of are Colonel, Commander, Sargent, two Leutenants, Master Chief, Leutenant Commander, and myself as Ensign. Who else is out there?

Master Chief Chappy here, one of Melissa's "axon spikes" today. Today's conversation with Melissa was a real surprise, Mike_Was mentioned that he spoke to a real person, but I had no idea about what was said, and no expectation that it'd happen to me. The 13:51 call (4:51 EST) at the National Gallery in Washington DC began as I expected (I'd picked up a few axons earlier today, so I knew what Melissa's opening statements should be today), but here's how it turned out (this is from a fuzzy memory, I had no recording device):

Melissa: Don't hang up... communication difficulties... I need to know I can trust you. What is my favorite game?
Me: Hide and Seek. Hide and Seek.
Melissa: That's the right answer, but how do I know you're not a recording?
Me: I live and breathe.
Melissa: You live and breathe? That's not enough.
Me: I'm real, I can give you dynamic responses; ask me a question
Melissa: What is you favorite game?
Me: Spin the bottle.
Melissa: Spin the bottle? How do you play that?
Me: You form a circle, boy - girl - boy - girl and put an empty bottle in the center. Somebody spins the bottle and wherever it lands, that's who he kisses.
Melissa: Fine. What do you know about the rogue?
Me: The rogue? She's watching you.
Melissa: How do I know you're not working for the rogue?
Me: Because I'm talking to you, not her.
Melissa: What's your name?
Me: Chappy
Melissa: Can you spell that?
Me: C H A P P Y
Melissa: What's your rank?
Me: Master Chief
Melissa: Master Chief? What ship are you from?
Me: The Pillar of Autumn
Melissa: What planet are you from?
Me: Earth.
Melissa: Communication is difficult, is there a number I can reach you reliably?
Me: Can you give me a time frame?
Melissa: Is there a number I can reach you reliably?
Me: I'll give you my cell phone number. It is 202 XXX XXXX
Melissa: I may want to communicate our conversation with my crew, do I have your permission to record you?
Me: Yes
Melissa: I love bees... I love bees... I love bees...

That's all I can remember, it was actually quite exciting, but I wasn't thinking straight... I'm thrilled that I got the "real" Melissa, it took many days to find the right phone in the Gallery Smile The call did sound a bit different, either the actress did a great job of sounding like a machine, or the machine did a great job of sounding like an actress; I couldn't tell you 100% that it was a person on the other end of the phone, but I'm leaning that way. Melissa did not swear me to secrecy or ask me to do anything special as she apparently did xnbomb, and others.

Probably because you told her the wrong ship, and thus didn't earn her trust enough.

Hi, long time reader, first time poster Smile

Just wondering why people are still going crazy on getting as many axons as possible for each wav file? (15 axons for bang which only needed 8 overall)

Now the axon hunters have managed to get to 777 (congrats guys), surely everyone can take it a little easier now. We only need the minimum necessary to unlock each wav file, so people don't have to neglect work/study/their families and friends as much Wink

Maybe this is a chance to slow down for many? Kick back and just get the axons as necessary each week to unlock the clips instead of busting a gut to get a personal record...

Gestas,
The reason so many are flocking to axons is they want to have a live conversation with melissa. that is why we only are missing a few 9 axons to complete this set of wav files. the spec is that melissa will only be calling live today.

So how do you know which coordinates have live calls or was it simply random.

It was random I believe, or at least not easily found today. all we knew is that melissa could live call an axon today. that's what made evenone go get axons today.

Gestas - also, when people leave their computers to go get an axon they have no idea whether anyone else is gettting other axons for the same clip. They are all too close in time. So, we take on the responsibility to do this service for all of our friends, and if it turns out more friends showed up than needed, well that is great. What we don't do is sit around and look at 20 cold axons and say "not my problem, someone else will get it." We step up. AND today there were live phone calls on offer. Smile

IMnot Garbage - stop with the repetitive questions. You have access to all the same information we do - who got the calls, what axons they were. There are reports all over the forums. YOU figure out the pattern if you can. Stop looking for someone to hand you an answer. Especially since you don't seem to listen to the answer.
