[SPEC] The ONI Conspiracy Spec Thread

From the recipe3 axons, we can now see the ONI conspiracies surrounding The Last Voyage of the Apocalypso.

Setting: Earth, mid-2552.

(Reasoning: The Battle of Sigma Octanis IV has occurred; Sigma Octanis IV took place in early 2552, while the Covenant fleet was inbound in late September. It is likely that the Covenant, even with the necessity of regrouping, will reach Earth before New Year's Day, 2553. In addition, Lieutenant Lower was 'not even born' in 2525, when Jericho VII fell.)

Dramatis Personae:

    * Captain Greene, commanding UNSC stealthship Apocalypso (ONI), deceased
    * 1st Lieutenant Rolf Sorenson, executive officer, Apocalypso
    * ONI tech Kowalski: AI expert, likely not from Sections Zero or Three.
    * Midshipman Arrelts: Kowalski's love interest and conversation partner.
    * (Midshipman?) McKaskill: the Old Man's contact on Apocalypso

    * Old Man: McKaskill's ONI controller. Possibly a persona of either the Castaway or Higher.
    * Cranky Old Man: supposedly from Troy; interested in papers confiscated by Marines; believed to be a false identity of Higher.
    * Higher: An old (at least forty), senior officer of ONI, engaged in internal investigations (read: spying on the rest of the military)
    * Lower: A lieutenant working for Higher. Exists mainly to give Higher someone to talk to.

    * Professor Avi: a colleague of Higher's. At least fifty years old. Retired from ONI, Prof. Avi teaches at a Boston university. He occassionally passes recruiting tips to his pals back in the Company.
    * Ronnie: a new recruit; studies under Professor Avi; has just decided to enter the espionage business after her last option (a shady print-fabrication startup) went bust.

    * Admiral Standish: head of ONI Section Three. Standish believes in preserving intelligence at great cost, something Section Zero disagrees strongly with. Standish is also believed (by Higher and Lower) to be involved in a conspiracy to cover up the cause of the Apocalypso's crash, i.e., the Forerunner artifact.

Nice! The Last Voyage of the Apocalypso, huh? How about Melissa's Island?

Oh, sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a haunted apiary,
It began around 2552,
On a ship you thought was a ferry.
The captain was a woman by the name of Greene,
The AI slightly nuts,
Five crewmen set sail that day,
No ifs, ands, of buts.
The lunar winds were getting rough,
Malfunctions, they assumed.
If it weren't for a cylindrical briefcase thingy,
The Apocalypso would be doomed.
The ship took ground on some poor girl's site,
with Melissa, her Princess too,
the Spider, and a Flea!
The Manticore, some E-mails and a countdown,
Here on Melissa's Isle!

(insert wacky island hijinks)

So this is the tale of a bunch of geeks,
We've been here for a long long time,
Answering payphones by the ton,
A pain in my behind.
The Operator will do her best,
you know it's the truth,
to recite bizarre memories,
into your phone booth.
Jars of honey and a trailer,
began this A.R.G.,
as well as Robinson Crusoe,
but with the foot of a flea.
So join us here each week my friend,
It's nothing at which to sneeze,
From payphone hunts to Notepad schemes,
Here on I Love Bees!

Incredibly cool, Cherry Cotton Laughing Cool Jetpack

but...... TOPIC!!!!

1) Three serious anomalies occurred on the Apocalypso:
a) A Covenant intercept indicated an attack on Troy. This intercept was forwarded to ONI HQ.
b) Glitches began to occur in Melissa's systems. It is highly likely that these are traces of the Pious Flea, as the descriptions show similarities to the Princess' descriptions of the PF's traces.
c) The Apocalypso picks up a presumed Covenant (likely actually Forerunner) artifact in deep space.

2) Upon return to Earth, the Forerunner artifact activated somehow. This had the effects of:
a) crashing all comm channels in Sol system
b) crashing the Apocalypso out of slipspace.
The reasons for the crash are mysterious, a common finding when dealing with Forerunner artifacts.

3) The Apocalypso's computer systems were found to be wiped upon observation. Officially, this was a side effect of the crash.
a) However, *we* know that the following computer individuals did survive:
EDIT: smartass, I had to go catch an axon. not my fault the board prematurely posted my message. all I got was a login script.
1) Melissa, or what's left of her on ilb
2) The Pious Flea
and possibly:
3) Durga (if she is Melissa, a copy thereof, or a fragment thereof)
4) The Sleeping Princess (if she is a copy or fragment of Melissa, or a Forerunner AI, or a backup ONI AI)
b) The means by which the Apocalypso's servers were wiped is currently unknown.

4) The possible means by which the Apocalypso's servers have been wiped are several:
a) As officially stated, the effects of the Forerunner artifact may have wiped them. This would necessarily imply that either:
1) Melissa got off the ship beforehand or
2) Melissa was offloaded at the time of the Shipwreck, by:
i) herself
ii) the Artifact
iii) the Pious Flea
iv) the Sleeping Princess
v) a combo of the above
b) The system's were wiped later by ONI Section Three (Standish). This would necessarily imply that Melissa left the ship after the wreck.

5) A faction in ONI does not want the truth regarding the Apocalypso to come to light, and 'arranged' Captain Greene's unlucky death in a bus accident just after landing. It is unknown whether that 'truth' has to do with Troy, the Pious Flea, or the Artifact.

6) In reference to Troy:
a) Troy was glassed, and everyone knows it.
b) Troy may or may not have been evacuated in response to Captain Greene's communique. Higher, in his presumed persona as the Cranky Old Man, certainly wanted to give the Navy bureaucracy the impression that it had been at least partially evacuated. The secretary taking the call was not surprised.
c) Some important 'family papers' supposedly belonging to Cranky Old Man (if they exist at all) were confiscated by Marines prior to landing. It must be assumed that this was done at ONI request. The reasons for the confiscation are unknown.

7) Something occurred on, around, or in reference to the colony planet Harmony, related to the incidents leading up to the glassing of Troy, that Higher finds 'instructive'. Except for this offhand comment, nothing is known regarding Harmony.

Cool It is therefore apparent that Melissa contains information vital to the Covenant war effort on several fronts. It is *unapparent*, however, to whom that information should be given. Certainly, there are elements of ONI that would rather destroy this information than allow it to come to light. This explains Melissa's belief that she is 'behind enemy lines' even when it's obvious she's on Earth, and Durga's extreme reluctance to be returned to the government.

I'm a little confused. When did the Apocalypso 'crash', leaving Melissa on ilovebees.com? If the ship itself transported through time, Capt. Greene wouldn't have met her end by a bus. Maybe only the computer data went through time, hence it was 'wiped out'?

The physical matrix of the Apocalypso, it must be assumed, remained in 2552. The 'crash' was a crash out of slipspace, causing temporary but catasrophic electronic disruption throughout Sol System. The crew successfully offloaded; the computers were inspected (and found to be wiped).

Only Melissa and her retinue (SPDR; PF; SP) have actually done any time traveling.

However, if all the computer data took a time trip, how do you explain Durga and the sound clips from 2552?

There's at least one thread where they're trying to figure out a time line using hints given through several of the .wavs, particularly the "alt_burgandy" series. Unfortunetly, I have to leave for work soon, so I'll do a search at lunch and edit this post with a link then...

I think these clips may rule out the idea of the Apocolypso "crash" as being the thing that brought our little friends back in time...

But we still have to consider that it might be...

Because dealing with time travel as part of a storyline, is a lot like trying to dance Swan Lake with a number of live, ill tempered, fish shoved down your pants.

Here's a link to a thread discussing the timeline. It's not the alt_burgandy thread, but it has links to that discussion:

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=70561&highlight=2535#70561

(And, of course, my post is totally wrong since it came before alt_burgandy. But based on that, if Kamal's sister was kidnapped to be a SPARTAN, it had to be for either a "second wave" of SPARTAN IIs or for Ackerson's mysterious "new Spartan" program; she couldn't have been taken at the same time as John/Master Chief.)

So what, then, is the significance to the fact that the .wav recordings we have been listening to all begin with a systems or communications failure of some sort? It seems to imply that the recordings begin exactly at the moment of the Apocalypso's crash...

no, it implies that they began AFTER the comm channels came back on... a space of a few seconds.

A few seconds is an ETERNITY to a good AI...

I believe that the interruptions are not simultaneous. There is compelling evidence in the clips that this is the case.

For example, there is no question that the interruption that is at the start of "emergency" must be long after the interruption that is at the start of the first Jan sequence. The first Jan sequence starts when she is doing the break-in. She is then moved to the police station and questioned. Then after she leaves the station it is apparently torched by J^2's associates. The interruption at the start of "emergency" must therefore occur after Jan has left the station, and thus long after the first interruption.

An alternative spec (which is certainly trout) is that the interruption on Jersey's computer is caused by the arrival of Durga. The other interruptions are at the start of clips because Durga is invading those comm systems to listen in. Perhaps it only happens on her first access to a particular system, and that would explain why we don't see interruptions on later segments in the same arcs.
