Well good luck with the new axon London hunter. Be sure to bring some kind of recording device so we can hear the first non US call! Im sure that this one will work for you. I wish that my GIS skills had been of more help (probably sent you on more wild axon hunts then nessicary) Ill be sure to lift a pint of the one of the many fine Portland Oregon micro brews to you guy for stickin it out.

Just dont tell Melissa "hide and seek" when she asks for her favorite song Wink

Did we ever confirm that the most recent question or the original question was used? "Stormy Weather" is a funny nickname for Captain Greene.

Meeting up? London Oct 2nd - 1807

Hi All,

I got 2 other people coming to help answer the call today (saturday). I'm kinda new to all this so can I confirm the axon is somewhere around Piccadilly circle? - Mappoint

Where we all meeting? I saw a Flidget Jerome say northeast corner with Carlton Street? So thats where we will be heading, unless someone says an alternative...

Is it the same thing if you get lucky? http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5886, http://www.sealpup.plus.com/ilovebees/ or is the captian question what will be asked?

I will have my ipaq for recording the call and will be on instant messaging for any last minute plans or ideas.

Quick thoughts - I know there are tons of phones in the game centre (troccodero?) which is very close! Theres also a couple of pay phones between Piccadilly circus tube and the tunnel which connects to the game centre. There use to be a payphone in the virgin/ug cinema. Will we have enough people to cover all these?

It looks like it will be in or around Piccadilly Circus. I am bringing a GPS unit, so hopefully we will be able to narrow it to a group of phones.

Well, as should be obvious from the recipe 3 page we didn't manage to get the axon hot today.

The most likely target is a row of about a dozen phones in the tube station. We stood guard on these using every method short of physical force to stop the hordes of tourists getting their filthy hands on our precious phones but a few got through and thus there are still several phones that haven't been eliminated in that block.

I would suggest anyone trying tomorrow try to get the phones we couldn't do today. If someone from today is going back could you post, otherwise I'll see about uploading a diagram of which phones have been checked.

The next most likely contenders are two pairs of red phone boxes. One pair is close to that statue of the horses and the other near that end of Shaftsbury Av.

It was great to see all the people today who I haven't met before. If it comes down to manpower I'm confident since with all the people who've been involved trying to get this axon hot so far we have a veritable army.

I will not be there tomorrow but good luck to those who are. I'll be try again during the week if it's not hot by then.

Today's axon hunters were Diandra, cubicgarden, Sarah, Rogue Element, bcriswell, Miles and myself. Cubicgarden should be along later with pictures. Smile

Bcriswell had a GPS unit with him, and located the coordinate point on the triangular traffic island in the middle of Piccadilly Circus. There's no phones anywhere near there, so we're taking this to mean we're meant to go underground.

There's 14 phones in total in the row Rogue Element already reported about. Starting from the right, we're missing for sure the first, second and sixth in the row. We also lost control of the 4th and 13th for some of the time we were expecting Melissa's call.

360 rotating Panoramic view of Piccadilly circus (can anyone see any phones on this?)

Multimap map of the location. Can someone tell me just how close to the point marked on that map did the GPS reader put you yesterday?

Panoramic photograph around the whole of Piccadilly Circus. Can anyone see any phones on this one?

Also, how sure are people that the phones in the tube station are the correct ones?

Finally, who is gonna be there on Sunday evening?

- Malrog is still catching up at 2am Rolling Eyes

*Edit: Added the panoramic photograph link

Um, try that?

For the people who like to have names to the faces, on the first and second group pictures, from left to right, it's bcriswell, Rogue Element, lank, Sarah, Diandra and me. Cubicgarden's the one taking them so he isn't in them, but he's the guy in the middle next to Sarah in the third group picture.

Pretty sure. There's no phones anywhere near the coordinate point on the surface and the American axons have been in train stations before.

I'm pretty sure they phones are on the coordinate point themselves. Someone else correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember we entered the station by the south entrance and then went northeast to get to them, which would put them more or less in the right area to be under the triangular traffic island. I'll be heading back tomorrow, and one of the things I want to do is make sure of this by checking out where the exit nearest the phones ends up on the surface.

Questions about datums...

I have been seeing a lot of talk about datums...and which datum did they use and attempting to convert between datums....I saw a similar problem on the las vegas thread and tried to clear up the misconceptions.

When we are talking about latitude and longitude....there is no error. If I tell you that you have a latitude of x and a longitude of y and you use your GPS unit to find that specific point....there is no error.

The latitude values and longitude values map out exact points on the surface of the curved earth. That is why they are in degrees...degrees are used with circles. The problems and the errors arise when you take those numbers with their inherent curves and try to lay them out flat on a map.

Important Point 1. If you have a GPS unit, and it spits out Lat/Long coordinates, you will be within the error for your GPS unit when you find the correct coordinates. That error is usually not more than 10 to 20 feet.

The NAD83 and NAD27 datums were projections of the curved earth onto rectangular maps. These datums don't use Latitude or Longitude. They use Northings and Eastings.

Important Point 2. As long as you aren't using northings and eastings, you don't need to worry about which datum or what conversions to use.

The only possible problem is if Mapquest or the other mapping programs have screwed things up. Mapquest et.al. are taking the Lat/Long coordinates and spitting out the corresponding point on their flat, rectangular coordinate map. This really shouldn't be tough, assuming that they have their act together. They have the datum for that map of london, and for an area that small (In comparison to the whole of GB) the conversion should not be difficult.

If you have any doubt, look at a good paper map if you can find one that has Lat and Long on it. Find where two major coordinates intersect and see if Mapquest has it right.

Important Point 3: Don't believe everything you read. I have studied surveying quite a bit due to my profession, but I could still get something wrong. I am particularly interested in the calculations others have done to convert from one datum to another. I would like to know where you got those conversions from and what they were, so I can double check them. In other words, don't believe me either until we can verify these calculations and their sources.

Important Point 4: I don't want you folks to get discouraged or to think this is some kind of impossible snipe hunt. Misinformation will make folks throw their hands up in despair if they think they have to check 10 different areas for payphones.

I want to ask one final question.....I know it may seem stupid on its face, but it is something we have dealt with in the SF, CA area, and I haven't seen it explicitly mentioned.

I know you have a few phones that you originally checked and thought were most likely the ones... phones that did not ring when the appointed time came.

My question is: at that appointed time did you try picking the receiver up anyway?

We have had phones that we have tested and found to ring, that do not actually ring at the appointed time. we have to pick the receiver up and hope that we don't pick it up too early or too late. we only know we have it when there is no dial tone.

Of course, I read now that it looks like the coordinate has moved. Lets hope the phone is found and works....
