[META] Dogpiling, factions, etc.

I didn't want to step into the fray on this whole thing, but it's become apparent that something needs to be addressed. I usually try to stay out of these kind of things (after all, meta discussion is part of the fun of playing), but when people start getting harassed for their ingame actions, I think we need to all step back for a second and look at a few things.

Disclaimer: The following is just my opinion, so take it for what it's worth.

First: Really folks, we gotta lay off of each other, especially folks like Weephun. See, part of the coolness of ARGs is being given the impression that we can influence the plotline. It's an illusion of influence, as it (usually) is something planned by the PMs all along. Sure, certain story arcs may be flexible, but overall, the PMs know where things are going, and a good game makes it feel like we're having an impact, even though in reality, we're usually not. We gotta remember that ultimately, it's the PMs' choice as to whether they use player actions or not. For instance, think about all the various emails that must have been going to ladybee777 and Dana over the past month. I'm sure all sorts of stuff has been revealed that "shouldn't," but the PMs ignore the stuff that they don't want to incorporate. If Weephun hadn't have said what he said, it may have just been someone else, or done some other way.

Now, as far as Weephun being told to withhold info, I think it was done (from a meta standpoint) in order to preserve the enjoyment of discovery for the players, not to create distrust, not to split us up.

Then there's this whole faction thing. You guys are making assumptions based on yet more assumptions, (ex: crewmembers will be getting info the rest of us won't. How do we know that????), and as a result, you're splitting off because you're choosing to, nothing else. Believe me, if the PMs wanted us to divide ourselves up, they'd make it apparent, but personally, I'd be really surprised to see that.

Also, it'd be great to temper the sour grapes and just enjoy what's going on for what it is. Sure, some folks may get swag, phone calls, emails, live interaction, but don't let the fact that you don't take away from the fun of those that do. We should be enjoying each other's interactive fun and cheering each other on when it happens, not get all pissy that we can't all have it.

I guess the bottom line is, why don't we wait and see what happens before we waste all sorts of energy pointing fingers and arguing and splitting into groups? All of this is so far being done in the name of assumptions, not even fact. We gotta remind ourselves that it's the puppetmasters who are in complete control of where things go, not us. Any influence we have is influence they choose to give.

And remember, they're called puppetmasters for a reason.

Wink

Worshippy I agree 100% I think part of the problem is that some people who aren't used to ARGs and don't understand the way they work are getting upset without realising the full story. Then people who DO know ARGs are feeling a bit irritated with the "more axons", and the fact they aren't crew members, and this has been growing for a while now, so I think this was the straw that broke the camel's back. It's a shame, but hopefully things will calm down a bit after the initial venting.

NB: Weephun, though I'm horribly jealous, I'm also horribly impressed at your secret keeping, and I'm not sure I would have been able to (though I like to think I would have been!), but the fact that you managed (which allowed a LOT of people to get a very entertaining surprise on viewing the 404 page yesterday) plus your ingenious solution to the mission Melissa gave you earns you my heartfelt praise and thanks Worshippy

Thanks vpisteve.

As I've posted in many places over the last few days, weephun played
the role that the PMs were trying to cast. Not only that but the way in
which he pulled it off was spectacular!!!

If he would have told us what was asked of him I have no doubts that
we would have bickered over it for at least a week. He was decisive and
correct.

And to reiterate a statement I have yelled across these forums:

There are NO sides.

Very well written, Steve; I concur.

Relax, everyone. This is supposed to be fun.

(Oh yeah, I'm jealous as heck, but I'm not going to let it ruin my enjoyment of the game!)

Nicely said, vpisteve.

Some of us really do need a reality check.

My feelings towards not harrasing people are the same, but when it comes to withholding information from the rest of the ARG gamers then that makes me upset. From day 1 Melissa has said i will be transmitting to my crew/ or to people she thinks are her crew. And from day 1 people have been answering payphones just as much or maybe even more than everyone whos recieved live calls. Basically what im saying is if where suppose to be in this together and solve this mystery together than it going to be hard to do that when/if someone is hiding valuable information from the rest of the team. I mean it doesnt make much since for just one person to know or just a handful of people. So im pleading to everyone like weephun, who are going to be receiving live calls then please forward your information to us.

I'm begging you all not to, thus cancelling out the previous vote and letting you all do whatever you want to do. You know, the way things should be.

IMnotGarbage's post did make me think of one thing.

When did we start thinking of the few recognized people as THE crew? I mean, from the beginning we were all the crew. Now that certain people have answered some random live axons, has that really changed?

I was always of the assumption (making an "ass" of "u" and "mption") that "the crew" were mearly those members of the crew Melissa considers "verified". (At least, I believe that's what she keeps calling them. "Verified".) And that we're all still "possible crew" as we were before this whole riggermaroll started.

All im trying to say is that i dont believe that the rest of us should be left out simply because someone was at the right place at the right time. Its not like the 15 people who were verified as part of the crew were the same people that were at those axons weeks before we hit 777. The live calls were most likely chosen weeks in advance seeing as how the crew members where asked who and what was around them. But for all we knew, i could of been answering a live call in Dallas, Texas and i wouldnt leave any of you out just because i was fortunite of enough to receive a live call. And there would of been a good chance that on any other day we would most likely not have the same 15 crew members that we have now.

Good post, vpisteve.

And with the person vs. person thing, I think there is a difference between folks disagreeing with one another (conflict) and folks who are out to malign or attack one another (vengence). I don't really know where that line would be, but I think that emotions, disagreements, and debate are a good thing. Individuals who intend to purposely malign another's character or try to muscle them out of the game...that's out of control.

The rest? Emotions. Tender, delicious emotions, masterfully brought forth by the Masters of Puppets.
