[meta][spec] Why is this game happening again? It has become more obvious that this ARG will have little to no direct impact on the actual game, so I begin to wonder about why have an ARG (vs other strange promotions like the cortana letters) with lots of phone calls, live calls etc.
I spec that this is Bungie's way of searching for talent, both in design and in acting, aswe're giving them plenty of fuel. It's relatively easy for them to monitor our progress but in game and oog, and what better way than live phone calls to see who can think on their feet, and act.
just a thought..I'll go to bed now so I'll stop making no sense....

I think it will have no impact on Halo 2. However, didn't the Beast have no impact on the movie A.I. as well?

whether it has any impact on Halo 2 or not, I doubt they're using this ARG as a means to collect new talent. remember, they're owned by MICROSOFT. I'm sure they're not all that strapped for cash.

That doesn't mean they'll have anything to do with Halo 2. For all we know, this happens a month before Halo 2, and Halo 2 won't even mention the story here.

Garbage, they are more peripheral much in the same way that the Beast was peripheral to the AI storyline. It LIVES in the same world without being the same storyline.

It's based on Halo 2. It isn't part of it. And anyway, we havn't been changing the ilovbees storyline at all. Every move in the story was thought of and calculated before it started. We havn't been playing the game, it's been playing us.

But are you absolutely SURE about that? By monitoring the message boards, they keep their fingers on the poulse of how the game is going, and an interesting SPEC might lead to a storyline revision. For example, did you think the payphone line in the sound files was already planned to be defective in advance?
I am expecting our erstwhile singing crew to appear somewhere in a wave with a future talent show or as the crew's last signoff or something.
My personal SPEC is that while the game has a somewhat rigid guideline, its being influenced along the way. And they are having fun with it along with us.

Re: [meta][spec] Why is this game happening again? You people need to read more on Bungie's history. Their puzzles, like ILB, always have something to do and/or connect with the game released after the puzzle is over, as well as the games preceding it. There's just no denying it.

That may hold well and true for Bungie's puzzles but the colloary isnt holding true for ILB. While the ILB cast of characters lives in the same world, it is appearing to be entirely tangential, much in the same way that the Blair Witch 2 group was entirely tangential to the first one.
Remember the Beast.

I'm sorry, I've been working long hours so maybe I'm just a tad on the cranky side, but...
New talent?
Are you on crack?
Geeze people, sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
And sometimes a game is just something fun for your fans to enjoy and raises awareness of your product.
Not that it wouldn't have been cool if we could have an impact on Halo 2, or if somehow this would result in a job...
But I really don't think so.

Other people have specced this long before now. I hold to the belief that the endgame of ILB will lead us directly into the beginning of Halo 2.
It should (from a marketing standpoint):
A - Satisfy the playeras with a good, if not mindblowing, conclusion.
B - Leave one or two loose ends that will nag at every one who has played the ARG and can only be answered by playing Halo 2.
Then everybody wins. IMHO

I don't know exactly why this game is happening, but I know why I'm getting involved. Its fskin GENIUS. The whole Halo story line is genius. Even if there is no end 'reward' this game will definitely go down in my life history. This has definitely been a highlight of my gaming career and its something that can't be associated with your typical console gamer.
The point being, I'm having fun .

hehe... all you Bungie non-believers... just you wait and see....
Bungie literally has hundreds of years of Halo universe storyline mapped out... it's all in the Halo Story Bible... novels like The Fall of Reach and First Strike are just fleshing out portions of this larger story, which has already been written. The ILB ARG is going to fit into the larger story in much the same way... it's probably not Bungie who is placing the calls, managing the voice actors, or writing the website prose, but it all obeys the story Jason Jones, Eric Trautmann, and the rest have put in place.
Characters like Kamal and Jersey may be leading characters in the ILB story, but they're really just secondary characters in the great scheme of things. But a Covenant artifact that can warp space-time and knock out an entire planet's C&C channels? That's definitely going to influence events we see after First Strike, whether they are explained in Halo 2 the game, or some other medium.
And, speaking of the Cortana Letters:
Interview with Eric Nylund, author of First Strike wrote:
HBO: Long before anything was known about Halo by the public, the series of emails known as 'The Cortana Letters' was sent to Hamish Sinclair. They haven't been mentioned in quite a while, and more recent information seems to contradict some of the material in them-do they refer in any way to events that took place on or before the battle of Reach, in a way that impacts the book?
EN: Yes.
