They all have religious overtones, which would be consistent with Covenant ship names ("Truth and Reconciliation", "Ascendent Justice", "Begotten Angel").

However, my gut instinct would be to tell her to go toward "deadly sin", but for no other reason than it's associated with 7 and it sounds, on first pass, like the one you'd most want to avoid.

Edit: Moonroach obviously had the same idea. Smile

So, let's start with what we know: those balloons were definitely put there by the Flea, or perhaps that part of Melissa that is under the Flea's influence.

Wait..how do we know these were put there by the Flea/Melissa? In Perdita's story, Perdita tied the balloons on herself. And if SP is the one talking about the balloons while Melissa goes all wonky, wouldn't these be her balloons? Or did I miss something that was said in the conversations somewhere?

I think dotreptile has it right. These are associated with numbers. There is a choice.. pick one out of the three.

hrothgar demonstrated that fairthful apostles is not correct.

I think we have to go with the 777 connection. Pick a path that is related to a 7. I'm sure there will be other forks in the path where a similar decision has to be made.

One more thing before I *really* need to get going. I hope the Operator isn't reading this, but she mentioned (after I spoke with the SP) that the "rogue process" was encrypted with a "code sequence" -- most likely the sequence of paths to take?

FAITHFUL APOSTLES

11 faithful apostles of christ are one possibility, but I can't remember all the names myself. Someone else want to chime in here?

Mark 3:16-19
These are the twelve He appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); James son of Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges, which means Sons of Thunder); Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed him.

Edit: d'oh, someone beat me to it. Called away from my desk mid-post. Bah. ^_^

Maybe it's a mathematical progression. 4+3=7, 7+4=11, 11+5=16.

Maybe we should tell her to go for the hidden path marked "Candles"? Smile

I agree. Let's go with 7 -- next person who gets a shot, go with DEADLY SIN. (We know that FAITHFUL APOSTLES is right out.)

And given that this is a reference to human religion, I retract my earlier statement that it has to be the Flea. It still could be, though.

Running with Wynn....

In terms of prep, any other obvious groups that use 7 like the seven deadly sins?

<good idea btw, Wynn>

Weasels

There is mention of weasels in Perdita's Story.

One day, the Circus came to town. The father decided to take the whole family there, even though they didn't have very much money. So off they went to see the Glass-Eater and the Broken Lady and the Electric Weasels for which this particular circus was known.

After the Glass Eater had spat out his last bottle of the afternoon, but before the Weasels were due to arrive in their famous Luminous Barouche, Perdita saw a balloon salesman selling beautiful bouquets of balloons. The balloons came in extraordinary colors—firelight-on-steel was one, the green of a heaving sea another. Perdita was fondest of the red ones: cheerful balls of bright blood red with long strings that bounced and tugged up against your hand exactly like hope.

I can't place a connection to which path to chose from this, but thought it was worth mentioning incase it sparked an idea

Thinking back, she said "sparking, electric weasels" -- most definitely.

Working backward through the story

The last balloon that Perdita left is at a phonebooth (obvious tie in since this is where we are talking to her.) The last place the story says she left one before that is at a bus-stop. Does anyone see any connection between a bus-stop and any of our choices?

kiss

maybe just ask her if 4, 11 and 7 mean anything to her? They might.

OOh! I know! Ooh! Pick me!

I had always known them as the Four *Noble* Truths, because "arya" refers to a noble *person*, but I guess they could be the Four Holy Truths as well. Well, the Four Noble Truths are:

1. Life is suffering.
2. Suffering results from attachment.
3. One can attain the cessation of suffering.
4. The Eightfold Path is the path to the cessation of suffering.

How that applies to the Princess, or for that matter Melissa, I don't know. Perhaps I should meditate upon it.

Let's see, eleven apostles: Peter, Thomas, Simon, Jude, John, Bartholomew, Matthew, Matthias. I think there were two James, weren't there.

That's all I can think of. Somebody with a more extensive knowledge than me can get the rest, hopefully.

But only eleven? Aren't they including Judas? Maybe weephun doesn't get to participate in the solution. (Sorry, weephun. Did you get to kiss her?)

But "Deadly Sin"? Aren't there seven? Is there one "deadly" sin in any religion?

In Christianity, wouldn't the deadly sin be not accepting Jesus?

In Judaism, there isn't any one *type* of sin that's particularly deadly. There's a category called pesha which is intentional disobedience, and generally considered to be the worst, but that's not deadly unless for some reason you don't atone. Interestingly enough, there are four stages to repentence, in some ways similar to Buddhism's Four Truths, but that's probably irrelevant.

Sin in Muslim thought is pretty close to the Jewish understanding.

Sin as understood in the West is irrelevant in Buddhism. And I think the Hindu conception is pretty close to the Buddhist one.

Most other major religions practiced in the West (Bahai, Jainism, etc.) are derivative of one or more of these religions, so their concepts of sin aren't going to be very different. I don't know enough about Asian religions like Shintoism or Confucianism, or indigenous tribal religions, to know what their concepts of sin are, but then again, I'm sure the PMs would stick with what's reasonably familiar to most of us.

So. I give up. Anyone? What's the one deadly sin?

You could ask Melissa what she thinks. A simple question might lead to the right choice. How many songs do you know, I know 7?
