Good points, I saw the timeline and was thinking something similar but should have been more explicit as I didn't really mean Herzog has some personal connection to Rani so much as he was the one manipulating Rani. Which meant that he has to protect her to live long enough to uncover whatever it is he's looking for.

 		Folks, just so we don't get too carried away on spec, Rani is alive-post crash. If brain-ninja's are coming for her, they aren't doing it to make any of the AI's we've encountered unless we've all seriously misunderstood the story thus far.

Oh, I didn't take HitsHerMark to mean Durga's "Brain Ninjas" literally; I just thought it was a fun way to refer to "mysterious government-conspiracy-type figures, with questionable motives, superior stealth, technology, and/or weaponry, and very limited fashion sense." Mr. Green

 		Rani is one hyper-observant girl. To notice clean ankles on a guy with his head busted open? That's kinda... creepy.

Agreed. It was a trail of breadcrumbs.

First, create the trail. Second, recruit someone observant and stubborn enough to follow it. Third, protect them. Fourth...?

(Just restating the obvious. Embarassed )
