[info/spec] ReCREWtment: Tips for Live Calls

Assuming that there will be more live calls on Tuesday and that Melissa is still hunting for members of her crew, the current recognized crew has compiled a list of suggestions based on our experiences and the experiences of others. Of course, this is all speculative, and criteria may change, but it helps to think about it beforehand nonetheless.

1. Answer the phone.
Answer as many phones as you can on Tuesday; this improves your odds of getting a live call if they're still coming out. If you can, try to go to phones which have been frequently marked as successful axons; most live calls seem to have been on such phones. It MAY be helpful to go with an existing crew member, since they, already trusted by Melissa, may be able to vouch for as-yet-unrecognized crew.

2. Be prepared to prove you are crew.
Know the day's question and answer before you leave. If you're going to an early axon, try to anticipate likely questions and answers. There is a forum thread devoted to that topic. Also, you will probably have to give a name and a rank. These does not seem to be any restriction on what rank Melissa accepts, but those who wish to keep it safe should pick a naval rank, probably not to exceed Captain, and give that. Also, giving the name you use here in the forum seems to work best, but has not been required. Finally, call her by name- that seems to please her.

3. Be prepared to prove you are human.
So far, Melissa has asked for stories about loneliness and revenge. She may ask about other human emotions - anger, love, or fear for instance. If Melissa does not ask you for a story, she has accepted jokes and songs as proof of humanity. Silence, hesitation, or questioning Melissa, have usually been rejected.

4. Have your contact information ready.
Melissa has asked most of the current crew for a phone number. Be prepared to give a number where you can receive a call the following Tuesday. It would also be great to use a phone that can records calls or conference others in.

5. Try to move the ball forward.
If you get Melissa live, you may be able to influence the game through your interaction with her. Find out if she has any specific requests of you, and make sure you tell her you'll accomplish them. (Whether or not you intend to do so may be another matter). It would also be helpful to everyone if we can establish two-way communication with Melissa; once you feel your place is secure, try asking her if there is a way we can contact her.

6. Report back your experiences.
Success or failure, your experiences will help others in the game. If you can record the call, try to. If you can take notes (or have someone take notes for you) do so. If you can post to the forums on your Blackberry, do so. The quicker information gets back to the beekeepers, the happier everyone will be.

7. BEE confident!
Hesitation or fumbling when Melissa asks you a question can result in failure. Respond quickly and confidently. If she asks you a question that absolutely floors you, stall for time confidently. ("Melissa, I'm glad you asked that question!") You might be able to get away with asking her to REPEAT what she's said - especially if you invoke the "bad transmission hardware" excuse.

We hope to see many more crew members recognized on Tuesday, and hope these shared experiences will help make that happen.

Good luck, and go enhottenate those axons!

One suggestion I can make is to not ask direct, pointed questions. I found out that the hard way real quick. (Not even a "Silence! I ask the questions!") I would say, just be prepared for anything. Expect Melissa to put George W. Bush on the line to ask you for...uh.. help with something. Wink Set wildly insane expectations of what will happen, and then when Melissa asks you a simple question, you will be cool, calm and collected.
This works for me, and is a suggestion to others. Smile

For those attempting to record the calls...

Radio Shack has an accessory for recording phone calls that I have been using til now to get very clear recordings. It is Cat # 44-533. They show it in their Online Catalog, but it can be picked up Monday in your local store for about 6 dollars with tax. They have an induction coil or something that picks up EMF from the speaker operating in a phone, so it will not work as a standard microphone.

Before you grab one, a quick warning: When I bought mine, the guy behind the counter said that it could be illegal to record a phone conversation in this state. Obviously he isn't a lawyer, and neither am I, so I have no idea exactly what the laws are regarding recording phone conversations. And the laws in your area may differ from the laws elsewhere.

If you CAN record the conversation legally, I have the following tips:
1. They do not work very well if used as shown in the catalog page I linked to. They work best if placed directly over the earholes. Obviously that makes it hard to hear what the other person is saying. My recorder has headphones out so that I can hear what is being recorded. YMMV.
2. I just tested it with a Samsung cellphone. It worked on the back of the phone so I was able to hold the phone up to my face like normal, but I had to hold the device onto the back. That could be a problem if you tend to lose coordination under stress like I do. You don't want to drop the phone in the middle of your conversation... Also, it had to be held directly over the small speaker in the phone, but once there, it picked everything up perfectly.

Good luck, and don't break the law!!!

Astald who cares, it's an ARG, A bush reference won't create total chaos in the topic, and the sentence flows, it doesn't stick out. And maybe Mellisa is Polotical and would ask you that question, What WOULD YOU DO THEN! Rolling Eyes

Also, I don't know about anybody else, but my Cel has a "speaker phone" option which works pretty well.

I've tested it with my friend on the phone, putting my digital voice recorder down on the table next to the phone, and leaning over both with respectible results. Your milage may vairy.

Just make sure you have a place to get away to for this if you're at work or school when you get the call...

Like your car. It blocks a lot of ambiant noise.

From my journalism background, the law is that you have to give warning or receive permission to record a conversation with someone else.

I am positive that this does not apply in the case of imaginary Artificial Intelligences from the future.

The only other way you could get stung leagally is for commercial duplication laws. It would only come into play if you tried to make money from the conversation, but being an active participant in its creation would keep you safe in this case anyway.

Along the same lines see if yout cell phone has a built-in recorder. I have a T610 and it does (T616 is the same phone)

On theT616 during a call press the joystick down and there will be a list of during-call options. the first should be record. It will put the file in the "my sounds" area. The amount of recording time is determined by free memory, so delete any old sounds, rings or pictures first if you have to.

Melissa specifically said in my call that recording and archiving was very, very important, so I bet that notifying her politely that you are archiving as a matter of 'standard operating procedure' would likely work just fine, if you phrase it in such a way to garner her assent.
