[INFO]Things to avoid & things to do in the pics for Mel

I really feel this all needs to be coordinated into one place, a list of all the things that have caused a pic to fail & a list of things Melissa likes. So far I have the following:

  • Not having a public payphone in the picture (Caveat: If you are going to receive a call on your personal number, then that will be suitable. But you MUST be one of the people named on recipe5 or you'll be rejected)
  • Not demonstrating allegiance visually
  • Not sending a photo that was taken today (if you have an old photo you wish to send, copy it and save it under a new name, this should cause it to appear as if it was taken today)
  • No demonstration of special skill
  • To get a Rank & File picture, you must salute. (thanks to XStryker and the Washington DC Axon Signals Corps for this info)
  • You can only be in one category, so if you've had a pic accepted it's not worth sending another (at least not worth sending it under the same name Wink ) Thanks to xnbomb for this info.

If anyone can think of any more (or if Melissa e-mails you with a reason as to why you've been rejected and it's NOT already in the thread, then mention it!

- Malrog

If you want to make sure you get the salute right, here's a howto.

multiple picture submits

Does she take multiple submissions? I have a number of options for my pic (Sci, Elite, Mech) and need to know if I have to choose 1 of the 3. I'm not trying to hog the glory, but we do need a lot of pics aside from just rank & file. Also, I won't bother w/ more than 1 if they stop accepting after the first.

Also, if someone thinks 1 of those would be harder to get than the others, let me know & I'll keep it in mind if I have to narrow my choices.

Well, I've sent multiple pics, only 2 have been kicked back so far.

My confirmation email:

Quote:
Excellent work, soldier.
Your research skills are most valuable.
Please be advised that while your private axon has been verified, and
therefore I will accept it, unverified crew members must submit from
public axons.
Good work. I knew you would not disappoint me.

So cell phones are OK for verified crewmembers.

If you wanna good laugh, here's my pic:

Confirmation of our crew shot. (Per Melissa, enlisted must salute the officers!) (Our pic had CDR aliendial demonstrating knowledge of how to use Comm eqmt [the "live" axon] while the rest of the Corps messed with it - wires, headsets, etc etc).

I forgot to mention - she made Cortana (Tom Bridge) make up a cheer: "TB:When I say Signal, you says Corps! TB:Signal! Crew:Corps! TB:Signal! Crew:Corps!" Loudly. Only a little embarassing in a train station. They probably thought we were a flash mob. Oh, and she made us do it again later, just because she could.

That's awesome, XStryker! Good setup there.

Question... I'm trying to submit a future axon, and I went during my lunch to snap a photo per Mel's request... but I tried several things and couldn't get the number to look any good. Anyone know a good way to take a picture of that tiny phone number printed on a payphone?

http://img66.exs.cx/img66/81/blurredphone2.jpg

There's vaguely what all four pics I tried taking looked like. That one shows that I even tried smashing that little plastic piece up against the paper so it would look clearer, and it didn't help.[/url]

Just got back from some more Dallas Axons, took my photos and shot them off.

Here's the email:
Quote:
astrovanmancomm.jpg - Lt Astrovanman displaying his tech comm skills.
astrovanmanandgiladasalute.jpg - We salute you, Melissa.
astrovanmanmap.jpg - Lt. Astrovanman displaying his nav skills.
giladacomm.jpg - Lt. Gilada displaying his tech comm skills.
giladamap.jpg - Lt. Gilada displaying his nav skills

and the last 3 are from a sequence of shots,
giladaparatroop1.jpg, giladaparatroop2.jpg, giladaparatroop3.jpg

Lt. Gilada displaying his low altitude paratrooper skills. I go where
angels AND fools fear to tread.

Here's Melissa's response:
Quote:
Congratulations, Lt. Astrovanman and Lt. Gilada.
This is excellent visual evidence.
I am especially pleased to have such a skilled paratrooper on my team.
I am very impressed.
Please share your evidence with other crew members and tell them how
pleased I am.

Now, please excuse the quality of photos, they're from a cam phone, and 3 of them were, well, quickly taken...

So here's a question... I'm considering running out with my digital camera, picking up a bag of party-size M&Ms and asking if I can take pictures of people for an internet scavenger hunt in exchange for an M&M package.... I'm hoping I could get at least 20 rank-and-file pictures but I don't know if that's feasible.

Is this considered acceptable behavior, or is involving people who really aren't involved in the ARG in any way not "part of the rules", so to speak? Discuss.

One category per crew member only

Seeing as we need 250 in the rank and file, I thought perhaps I could submit an image of myself saluting at another axon (already sent one acting as a Comm. Officer at one). Here's what Melissa replied in the way of rejecting the second image:

Melissa wrote:
Thank you, Col.
Please note, however, that I cannot use a single crew member for more than one specialized position.
Multi-tasking is NOT acceptable.

I'm not sure I can see how being in the rank and file is specialized, but the sentiment is clear ... one category per crew member only.

Well, I see over on recipe5.html:
1 Paratroop, 1 Vac Suit Tech, 1 Scuba - 1/3 ... PENDING VISUAL CONFIRMATION

So hopefully that's my attempt at paratroopering...

Confused

Well, after having my first pic rejected because it was an unconfirmed private number, I resubmitted again, at a payhone by me, in a bear costume and fatigues saluting (I figured that would count as entertainment). I couldn't get a good shot of the number on the phone, so I submitted the number.

It gets rejected, with Mel saying:
Quote:
Data in this photograph is compromised.
Evidence rejected.

I write back, sending the photo again, along with MS encryption that would show wether the photo was modified. I again recieve a response.

Quote:
This photo is compromised.

Sigh. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot.

One thing missing from the notes on what works/doesn't: Has anyone sent a message that shows minor corruption due to embeded text? I want to send a message to SP this way. Please, if anyone has had such a picture accepted/rejected let me know so I can decide what to do! Also if this information becomes available it should be added to the list in the first post (if you read this Malrog).

Addendum: I didn't steg anything in the image, either. So I'm not sure what could have caused the rejection.

I sent an e-mail to Melissa asking if we should take pictures of "new recruits" (e.g., people off the street) or not - here's the response I got:

Quote:
Yes, new recruits are acceptable.
You are showing excellent initiative.

So grab a camera and get out there, crewmembers!
