[SPEC] Jersey's Dad - Dead?

Okay, my first topic ever, please be kind.

I searched and read every post under the terms "jersey dad." None of them mentioned this:

A few days ago I was reviewing the completed axon wavs. I got the feeling from how insistant Durga was about not changing Jersey's fathers post that he was probably, in fact, dead. Just now I downloaded "6C Jersey's Mom's Affair" and am convinced that that is the case. At the end, his mother says "Your father always loved you..." And that is the part Jersey keeps playing over and over, as if he can't believe that nobody, especially his mother, would tell him.

Durga didn't tell him because she knew how much it would hurt him. His mother, technically, wasn't having an affair, so to speak, she was simply moving on with her life. I don' t know why Jersey was left in the dark, perhaps his father was on a secret mission (dum, dum, dum!)

Does this sound plausible?

Has this been done before (man I hope not..)?

If so, please insert trout here:

In the .wav file on_reach Durga actually tells Jersey what ship his father is currently located on(I can't remember waht it's called and I didn't feel like looking it up at this instant) and that he's OK. So from where i sit, it appears to me that Jersey's dad still lives and breathes.

My guess about the past tense used by Jersey's mom is that his dad has been gone for so long, it's practically like he's dead. Obviously if Jersey doesn't even know where his father is then they aren't talking every night before bedtime.

I'll admit that I did think the exact same thing as you after I heard the recording of Jersey's mom, but then I remembered on_reach.

Assuming that Durga isn't lying to Jersey to avoid having to tell him about his father's fate. I agree that he's likely still alive but it's not an impossibility that he isn't.

Mmm, nah.

Jerseys Mom:
"Your father always loved you..so did I"
" Fine, tell him".."It will hurt him, but it's not going to change anything"

Sorry.

So I listened to again.wav again and Jersey's mom uses the past tense about her loving him too. It sounds a ton like what parents say when they're telling a kid they're getting divorced. Maybe Jersey's parents are divorced and they never told him? That would probably rattle him too.

Alright, all good points. I conceed.

In that case, what is Durga's motive for not reassigning Jersey's dad? She's adamant about it. And why would hearing that his dad loved him have such an effect on Jersey? We could assume that he already knew that.

The semantics of the speech indicates that he's alive, but the actions of Jersey and Durga seem to lack a proper motive.

Please expound...

point 1. Durga is a military AI. She won't interfere with military operations.

point 2. Jersey expects to get an explanation, but instead gets the "we love you" bit. He misses his dad.

Well if Durga is an AI that was created by the military, or even ONI, then she would have been programmed to always put the mission first. Since Jersey's dad is on a mission, that is more important than his son missing him. Can't really think of anything for the Jersey situation at the moment.

Jersey's motivation is easy. He realises his dad is in danger out there in space where the Covenant are running rampant and so wants him out of danger, that is, reassigned to Earth.

Durga is a little more complicated.

Firstly, it could be that she sees the larger picture. Jersey's dad is part of a larger effort to fight the Covenant, and the end goal of protecting humanity's survival is larger and more important than the survival of Jersey's father as an individual.

Secondly, it could be that Durga knows that Jersey's dad doesn't -want- to be given a soft posting on Earth instead of being out fighting.

Thirdly, it could be that Durga knows there is more to Jason Morelli than a simple posting in the radio corps; ie, that he's more than he appears, some sort of ONI operative who is doing something important out there.

Or, it could be that Durga knows the Covenant is about to arrive and invade Earth, and thus that by the time he arrives it will be either just as dangerous on Earth as it is out in space, or that it will be too late and Earth will already have been glassed.

4. [SPEC] Durga may know that Dad is absolutely critical to the war effort.

Well, hold on a minute.
If Jersey's dad is the Castaway, and the Castaway was on the Apocalypso, and the Apocalypso is now at Earth, then Jersey's dad would be on Earth running from busses.

Therefore, Jersey's dad is not the castaway.

ooh, is this trout?

Umm..

I hate to bring this up right now, but didn't we determine earlier that Jersey's dad was The Castaway, and that he was on the Apocolypso when it 'had an accident'?

He may already be on earth, and is busy dodging 'bus accidents' right now.

Durga may or may not know this. I think it would depend on how connected she is to Melissa and some Apocolypso memories...

I thought it was all just spec. Tied together by Jazz and radio beacon deployment.

When Melissa said " A sailor with Odysseus" was that not the Castaway's ship?

The factual information we have about the Castaway is completely contained. All we have is that one paragraph from the links puzzle, and it could have taken place at any time. It is possible he was only on the ship for a short time. I just find too many coincidences with the Castaway and Jason Morelli, and my spec was never proven, just adrift on a wine-dark sea.
