[Dead Like Me] A possible rabbithole on Livejournal?

So I'm editing the userinfo for a community I maintain, when I notice someone I don't recognize has friended it. That reminds me to check my own userinfo to see if anyone new has friended me, since I've had people do that at random before.

I find someone called DeepSleeper has friended me and several other people I don't recognize at all. The journal was created yesterday, the first post was made yesterday, and the post sounds -- well, either it's a journal for an ARG, a journal for a character someone's playing with, or someone bored trying to screw with people's heads.

Thoughts?

I have to wonder why the author didn't make a DeadJournal instead.

[LAUGHS!]

Maybe he's more into irony than bad puns? [meta] Or if this is an ARG, the PM/s probably figured more players would be on LJ. I know I had my LJ listed on my unforums account for a little while, although I took it down before this journal was created... [/meta]

Looks like there's another post. If this is an ARG I don't see where or how it'd work, but I wonder if he'd mind another person friending HIM out of the blue. It looks like he's inviting an audience anyway.

Also note that "Dark Dream" and "You would not wake up" are from the Beast/AI ARG and are quoted on his info page, and he mentions the ocean in this new post.

Maybe just a fan having some fun?

I wouldn't think being friended is a problem, since he apparently friended his current set all at random. (Unless any of the other usernames are secretly BigNameARGers, or something.)

He did just mention "dropping memories in unprotected files and directories" (paraphrased), which could be the start of something... Or it could just be a fan having some fun. Or something. [snickers] [shrugs]

DeepSleeper's posted another two times since I found him. This post in particular looks like it's either a puzzle or just story-fodder. Anyone have any ideas?

Well, most of his research has to do with the mind, and then there's the baby names thing. Maybe he's trying to find an explanation to why he can't remember anything? Maybe the baby names are there to spur a Memory? I really don't know, I'm just rambling thoughts.

The baby names thing was my suggestion - DS said in his original post that he didn't remember his name, and since I tend to hit those sites a lot (for naming RPG characters and things), I thought of 'em. [grins] Although the mind thing is interesting...

What's interesting to me is that he says that those sites are on his "To Do" list, ye since he has them he must have already researched them.

Also, why would he be studying more than one idea at a time? Plus he sorted it into before and after lunch.. Why would you do this? It doesn't make sense to me.

It sort of makes sense to me - if he's just "skimming" right now for sites he needs to pay more attention to later? Since he's supposedly both dead and in the Internet, he may be able to absorb information at a unique rate.

And presumably, all those sites should be connected somehow. Or at least, all of them except the baby names site, because we know why he included that.

Just read his last message and noticed something in the "quotes to ponder" section.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are a series of characters that are struck-through.

When those characters are isolated, they spell out: tired of ths.

Kinda makes me wonder what's going on myself.

There's a new post on deepsleeper's LiveJournal page, dated Friday, June 6, 1986.

For those of you interested:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
When I was about twenty, I guess... it's hard to remember the difference between a couple of years and a couple of days anymore (and doesn't that speak wonders for me for keeping this up to date) my mother and I went to see the movie Space Camp. It was at the same time both plot-hole-filled tripe and scientifically inaccurate crap. That didn't bother me, and it still doesn't, because it was a movie about the love of space. I've always felt to a degree that we as a people belong in space, because it is in space that we'll continue to live our lives long after the Earth is dead and cold. That's not fantasy to me, it's just reality: If we are to survive, we must grow outward.

By "we'll" I mean "you'll", or "your grandchildren will", of course. I guess I can't include myself in "We" anymore.

When I was even younger, young teen, a boy made fun of me for reading science fiction and nothing but that genre. I'd like to say that I devised some futuristic means of revenge, but instead we just mocked each other until it turned into a fistfight. I wonder if he remembers that incident at all. Did it matter to him?

It matters to me. I can hold on to it. Things become so significant when they're all you have. Sometimes I feel like I'm on an extended camping trip in a place where all I can have is what I can carry or what I can squirrel away in hiding holes, free storage web space... do you have any idea what thinking HTML does to the mind, just to ram it into some half-assed spot no one will ever look at? Even me? Essays I've written on who I was and who I think I'll become. Where did I keep them? Would I recognize them if I saw them again?

A week before my somethingth birthday the Hubble telescope was launched. Soon it'll be falling back to Earth. They took that as such a joke at first, but once it got into focus, it was all right. Maybe that's all I need. A little focus.

Focus.

Christ. Have I been that blind? My birthday. A week before it...

I need to do some checking. Now.
