I think it's plausible that the Apocalypso is here in our time, but it would most likely still be in the Moon's orbit. If it actually crashed on Earth, there would be no way to hide something as big as that. Plus, how would it then get back? I think splitting timelines may be a bit too much convoluted for this particular story.

Perhaps this whole game is about eventually sending the Apocalypso "back to the future." When Melissa is well again, she will "upload" to the ship in lunar orbit, and send it back. Then the events that we've been listening to will occur. What a crazy loop that would be, huh? That's just some far-out [SPEC].

Oh boy! Sleep!

THAT'S WHERE I'M A VIKING!

...

Though one has to think... Perhaps one of the "crew" in the hear and now is a "ringer"? That is to say... Somebody who really IS a member of her crew?

... I wonder what they think of Dana...

Probably that she's hot. Razz

This is growing out of a discussion on IRC last night. I haven't read the novels, but hopefully this is close to right.

fact: The covenant attack planets in two ways: they glass them (orbital bombardment) or they perform a more classical assault on the planet's inhabitants. The later is only used in cases where the planet possesses some object of value to the covenant, such as forerunner artifacts.

light speculation: Melissa and the gang were sent back in time via a crystal on board the Apocalypso.

serious speculation: The crystal sent the entire ship back, which proceeded to crash into Earth with crystal on-board. This event is being concealed by the world governments, as to prevent the inevitable panic caused by a ship from the future crashing into earth. The crystal has or will soon find a home in the depths of somewhere not unlike Cheyenne Mountain. When the covenant come to glass Earth, we will make sure that they know there is a forerunner artifact somewhere on the planet, saving us for the short term and giving Halo 2 time to happen.

If you make the SPEC that the entire Apocalypso went back in time, the onus falls on you to explain why Capt. Greene, McKaskill and other crew members are still in the future after the crash. They are in the future, you know, because we hear about their activities and fates from Durga.
