Let's not forget that JJ was tied up when he died... those two goons had shot him with web guns after he landed in the basement, binding him up with buckycable mesh. (Buckycable, I'm guessing, is a carbon fillament made from linked molecules of buckministerfullerine. This would be VERY strong, hence the goons' surprise that JJ could start tearing the mesh.)

It's not too hard to hit a non-moving target that's tied up, especially when you're only an arm's-reach away. All you need is a big enough gun or enough time and bullets... and Thin spent two (three?) rounds into JJ's head. That's gonna hurt even with a titanium-reinforced skull, and JJ was "one-point-oh" and "all too human"... and so was even more vulnerable.

He wasn't a world-striding combat-god when he died. He was just an unfortunate fish in a barrel.

-- Steve's seeing some of the Spartan Mythos creeping in here as well as the UNSC propaganda broadcasts... they're still human, folks!

First of all, disclaimer: you certainly could be right.
I just happen to disagree with you.
Quite aside from the fact that a SPARTAN, even a 1.0 emeritus, is not fun to have to hold onto for the duration, this SPEC from camshaft, edited by Mazian, just fits too well:

I believe Thin may be attempting to actually make Jan love him. I know he says that, but he also says:

I don't know why I take you under my arm...

There is an established psychological condition called Stockholm Syndrome, where the victim ends up attached emotionally to the perpetrator. It's a sick and twisted idea where he might be trying to bring her under his retinue through psychological torture. He deserves to get the Knife himself...

You've got the right idea, but I think that in the excitement yesterday some have missed what "cupid's knife" actually is. It "knows what you are thinking" and, in this case, induces pain whenever Jan thinks bad things about Thin. Like electric shock therapy to the brain. So if everytime she thinks bad things about Thin, she gets a horribly painful shock right to the cortex, eventually she will be conditioned NOT to think anything bad about Thin. She won't be able to hate him -- the absence of hate, of course, is (arguably) love . . .

Of course, Jan's a smart girl, so just strapping her in the chair won't work. So you have to do something really horrible -- like, i don't know, killing her dad right in front of her. {emphasis mine-Platonix} She won't be able to control her anger, the "knife" will do its work. This is what Thin means by "full of love for Thin." It's not stockholm syndrome; it's full-fledged, shock-induced trauma to the brain. This could seriously mess someone up . . .

Anyway, this is Thin's "elegant" (for lack of a better word) solution to his "Jan" problem. Being brainwashed into loving (or not hating) the guy seems a bit worse than plain old-fashioned torture.

Respectfully disagree. Love and hate are two sides of a single coin. They are both extreme emotions, and because of that it is so easy for Love to become Hate, or vice versa.

The opposite of any strong emotion is the lack of an emotion: Apathy.

However, after everything that has been done to Jan, she (just like we) will never feel apathy towards Thin Kinkle.

Assuming Thin's plan had been carried through, the only emotion left for Jan to feel would have been some sick antisocial personality disorder version of Love, or finally manage to mask her emotions. If she couldn't mask her emotions, or find some way to Love Thin, her only remaining choice would be death and escape.

Ugly little quandry. Confused

He wasn't tied up when he landed. The story shows that he had amazing relfexes as others were surprised that he was able to dirve manually among the robot-controlled cars. He should have wiped the floor with the two hoods before they could pull a netgun trigger (which in the clip they didn't do very quickly). Readers of this thread should go to this thread for more details of spec on how J^2 was set up and was expecting someone else (Gladys) to be coming any minute. A correlary would be that Jan would have been captured throug a simlar set-up.

There is no evidence to suggest that Thin has any special abilities above bravado. All he did was beat and then shoot a bound victim.

True. He was not. The fall through the floor most likely stunned him long enough for them to fire the net guns to tie him up.

EDIT: To make more sense.

And the other thing to remember is this: JSquared was a Spartan 1.0. Now, we remember that they took the Spartan2.0s at age 6.. now, even if they had done it at the same time, the Spartan1.0s were all volunteers, and most (going from the example of Gilly) were already in the corps, which makes them at least 18-20ish.

Now, even if the chief was taken at the same time as the Spartan1.0s were being tested upon, that makes James easily sixty. Master Chief is somewhere around 45.. so there's another reason Thin and his goons could beat him - they're half his age.

from Durga's "report" on gladys~

Durga: [Through a chatter] Me. You are Gladys Wilson. Born Gladys Ashanti Swanson in Tahoga, Texas. You volunteered for a SPARTAN program in January of 2491, after a year and a half of special forces.
Gladys: How in the world --

making an assumption here~
gladys entered UNSC military at lowest legal age, 18, and worked her way up to special forces after 2-4 years. if true, or nearly true then an estimated birth year would be UNSC 2469, and estimated age in the low to mid 80s..

but..

as pointed out in fall of reach and other books, soldiers and non-essential personel stay in cryostasis during space travel, which could add up to may saved years in the end. also, depending on medical levels in the haloverse time period, it wouldnt be hard to assume that mid-80s is Not considered elderly any longer and is more like a middle age in terms of physical and mental stability.

this is all on top of side effects of the enhancement process for the SPARTAN 1s

this all relates back to J^2 because, I assume, UNSC selected/accepted only soldiers from the same age bracket

btw: the "recruits" for SPARTAN II were collected in Aug/Sep of UNSC 2517

please excuse my grammer and structure skills. my brain dosnt connect ideas with proper english
