Arete

I just finished listening to the story we have thus far...I am in awe.

I never imagined that this endeavor would evoke such intense emotions as we all experienced today. I send quiet respect to the team crafting this narrative, for reminding me of the sheer power of storytelling. Thin Kinkle will get his. It all comes out in the wash, one way or another...

It's hard, but I have to remind myself that these people do not exist beyond this collective. It doesn't soften the blow though, when I remember that atrocities of this sort have been perpetuated by man as long as we have the had the memory to recall...and these acts still take place to this very moment, all over the globe.

Some have remarked that this is the failing of mankind, these acts of cruelty and malice...that we should hit the reset button.

I do not agree..and neither would our forefathers in the ancient world.

The virtue of mankind is that when we become aware of such acts being commited, we recognize them to be evil in the truest sense, and we, if we are virtuous, then become outraged. Our drive to become better is what we have fought and died for as a race. So take a good look around, be aware of your world. To steal a quote, we must be vigilant against evil men and more so against the indifference of "good" men, and not shrink away from what we must do, no matter how small, to make life better. That drive is what created civilization and is the only reason to sustain it.

We don't hit the reset button... take out the trash. We refine. To steal another quote, if you are going through Hell, it's best to keep going.

I'll get off of the soapbox now. Sorry.

It's been a hard day.

Just as a suggestion for Jan on what to do with Thin:

A slow-running (about 1 or 2 revs of the chain about every 5 minutes) chainsaw, on some loose springs that slowly pull up to the ceiling, which is applied to his genitals as he stands, while he himself is hooked up to stimulants to keep him awake.

That way, as the chain slowly carves gobs of flesh from his body, starting at his most sensitive parts and heading up through intestines, stomach, liver, and finally between the lungs to heart and death, he has time to really think about what he did.

At least, that's how I'd do it...

Yeah, I think Jan should definitely be the one to take revenge on Thin Kinkle for his actions. Or better yet, let both Gilly and Jan do it. Twisted Evil

I've been having a terrible week... actually, several weeks. Work is stressing me out, cause I'm working 7am-10 or 11pm every day (our project goes live next week). This story has been a nice way to stay sane. But man, I could NOT sleep last night. I was afraid I was going to have nightmares about Jan being tortured. Even though I'm a very non-violent person, the reassuring thought that let me drift off was of terrible things happening to Thin.

I believe Thin may be attempting to actually make Jan love him. I know he says that, but he also says:
Quote:
I don't know why I take you under my arm...

There is an established psychological condition called Stockholm Syndrome, where the victim ends up attached emotionally to the perpetrator. It's a sick and twisted idea where he might be trying to bring her under his retinue through psychological torture. He deserves to get the Knife himself...

This was the immediate thought I had, and I'm suprised you're the only other person to post on it.

[SPEC]I think we're going to see the return of Stupid Cop sometime soon. He was a big character for a couple phases, so how could they just drop him? It's just a hunch, though.[/SPEC]

This one has Jan written all over it... a part of me is quite disappointed in Gilly because she dropped the "insubordination" bug in Jan's ear to begin with... helping with the rescue was the least she could do, but vengeance is Jan's!!!!!!!

I just got in to work, and I was able to (very quietly) listen to the rest of this week's chapter.

Fitting, isn't it, that everything falls apart at chapter 7? Talk about a milestone.

It makes me sad. It brings up painful and fresh memories. A friend of mine killed herself just a little over a month ago, and I'd gotten over it, for the most part. But hearing Jan....

A Hero is coming, though. The Hero, if Bungie's mythos is to be followed. The Covenant represent a different evil; a mindless, ravenous hunger for death that knows not mercy or censure. Thin, at least, has a plan, as sick and twisted as he is.

I'm confident that he'll be dealt with.

Yeah.

Me too.

There just aren't words.

Oh, there are words - it's just that they're the kind that'd get you kicked off the forum double-quick, is all.

Myself, here's what I'd do:

1) Shoot Kinkle in the nuts with a .50 calibre rifle

2) Shoot him in the kneecaps with an MP5-SD.

3) Shoot him in the elbows with a .40 pistol.

4) Shoot him in the shoulders with a .22 long rifle.

5) Take off his footwear.

6) Take off his gloves.

7) Bend all injured joints in directions they were not meant to go.

Cool Pour a mixture of vinegar, ground glass, and salt into the wounds.

9) Shoot off his toes with a .22 pistol.

10) Cut off his fingers, a joint at a time, with a carbon-steel knife.

11) Leave him to die.

Nah.

I just want to let him play with the electric weasels. Then make him do a broken lady impression.

OK, now y'all are disturbing me a little, heh.

I mean, it's not as if I want the PMs to give us a mournful story arc about how Thin Kinkle was beaten as a child, and made to sell paper flowers for a penny each in sub-zero temps to help supplement his evil grandmother's alt burgundy addiction ...

but uh, yeah. Heh. You people are nearly as scary inside yr heads.

Still hatin' on Thin,

K.

Disturbing? That's barely a start on what I'd do - though I think I'd end it with the classic Mafia "Concrete Shoes" trick.

With a malfunctioning rebreater.. or better yet, a full airtank. So he can really think about the meaning of life, and how if he'd made that one choice right...

... emotions are running high right now it would seem. *shrugs* I've seen it before, and no doubt will see it again before this concludes.

I can see the headlines "Alternate Reality Game Drives Participants to Drinking."

The PMs have tapped into a profound element in human psyche: A well told story with believable characters [i]with whom the readers/players interact[i] is very personal, and we begin to care about those characters.

I just hope the game can approximate the quality of storytelling.

so who exactly is Thin? Is he just some common thug? I mean he caught Janissary, beat up James and killed him, all the while slipping through just in time before Gilly arrived...

and the "bigger dog" statement...

i posted this earlier but could Thin be a 2.0? 1.0's vs 2.0's type of thing?

so many questions! Why did he go out like that?! He's a SPARTAN!!

Fight decay... with FLUORIDE!

I've suffered the same wellspring of genuine anguish that many others have. I also feel Jan and Kamal's pain. I know what it's like to loose family members. As to what i'm about to say: i don't mean it as an admonishment, or as a personal attack to any of my fellow beekeepers. We're all in this together, and sometimes, the only thing i can contribute is my analysis of the situation. I'll try to make my analysis in as much of a respectful manner as possible.

This situation is dire indeed. Not only because of Thin Kinkle's depraved actions, but also due to the depraved response by many forum members. How can we honour Jan's pain, J^2's death, and Gillie's rage if we lower ourselves onto the same base level as Thin and his compatriots? I am aware that words don't always translate to action (and in our case, would be impossible to translate into action), but even thinking these thoughts puts us into a mental state that would be contusive to the continuation of such depravity. I've made similar ideological assertions in other posts, but i think it's worth mentioning here too. The only way to win out over moral decay is to banish all traces of it: not only in your enemy, but also in yourself. The PM's have demonstrated –rather artfully- that evil abounds in the Halo universe, not only in the covenant threat, but also in certain aspects of humanity.

We've borne the full brunt of this realization in this week's axons, and have responded by resolving that Thin should suffer even greater evils. I've noticed many posts tallying the terror people would inflict upon Thin should they have the chance. I've noticed no posts talking about how people wish they could comfort Jan, or stay Gillie's wrathful hand. No one wants to turn Thin over to the proper authorities. I can't blame anyone their thoughts, but where must draw the line? At what point does heartfelt revenge become unjustified? I know the dark consensus here is merely wishful thinking, but where might this collective train of thought lead us, but to further dark acts?

Edit for Prokaryotic: Thin Kinkle is a gangster that Jan first met at the Bar that Aunt Gladys suggested to her. She beat Thin at a game called Moons, and further endeavored to disrupt his operations by ruining the recruitment of a fellow named Gene. This is Thin's revenge on Jan for interfering in his illicit operations. Thin is not a Spartan; he is just well prepared for trouble upon capturing Jan. He has at least a half-dozen men on hand, and hits James with two "buck mesh" net-projector mechanisms in order to immobilize him. Then they assailed James and shot him three times to kill him. To my knowledge, they also hit him with a trapdoor trap in order to disorient him before they hit him with the nets. Even so, James (who's years out of his prime) managed to take out several perimeter guards before his capture and subsequent death.
