Either/or. Laughing

I think I've just been through too much crap in my 18 1/2 years, seen too many bad things happen to too many good people, and seen more than my share of bad people get away scot free with doing extremely bad things... yeah, it might have warped me a little. I just can't stand to see good people continually getting nothing while the bad get away. That's pretty much what inspired the constant churning of hatred inside me at Thin and his cronies, why I'll be cheering whether Gillie slits his throat, or whether Durga get's the police there to arrest him. One way or another, as long as he goes down, I will be satisfied.

Granted, there is a "right" and a "wrong" way of that happening, but I've formed the thought that there is no "right" or "wrong", there is only people's opinions of you.. and I've long since given up on all but a few people's opinions of myself. Very Happy

[L]et it now be noted in our decision here that this is what we stand for: justice, truth... and the value of a single human being.

Spencer Tracy's character read that with the verdict in Judgement at Nuremburg and I think it stands pretty well as a guide post on how to act. We could do worse, anyway.

-- Steve does think it sets the bar rather high, but would rather miss when aiming high than miss when aiming low.

edit: Thought I should put a link to the speech here. It's pretty powerful stuff, and it casts in-game events (and events in the novels) in an interesting light.

As always Anton, well said. And everyone, honestly, this has been my favorite thread in a long time. A lot of heartfelt thoughts have been written here, a lot of wisdom, a lot of vengence.

The PMs have truly done their job, and I'll admit sadly I was starting to wonder about the course of this game. Why, truly, did it exist? Just to entertain us till Halo 2? Surely that would be a waste, in a sense. They did so much more with it, and look at the things we're thinking about now, questioning, realizing.

There's more to life than just living.

So thanks for the kind words, and just...well said, everyone. Even those colorful tortures, rather eloquent in a shuddery sort of way.

And as an aside, this is the real reason I've loved Halo. The story. It's hard to buy this kind of story in an RPG anymore, let alone a first person shooter. And with the sequel comes true depth, a real look at humanity, our emotions, and what it is that really makes us human, both good and evil. I love what has been said on the previous pages about goodness and hope, as well as the evil that lurks within us and must be fought. Whatever the form, evil must be fought. Not to self-destruction, but to understanding because of hope.

Heh this has all been said, so I'm done. I'm just strangely elated, despite all the pain going on. The wonderful, amazing fact is: They Get It. And they're willing to show us in a clear, painful, yet understandable way. Hopefully some people will learn much from this (no, I'm not pointing to anyone at all, just meaning anyone playing the game. Get's us to think).

So well-played all, PMs and fellow gamers alike. How honored I am to know such people as you. Farewell, and again, here's to hope.

I would just like to thank each and every one of you who's shared their pain, joy, anguish, hatred, and/or amazement here on these forums. To partake of this moving experience by one's self can be amazing, but to bear witness to such a thing whilst alongside countless friends, it's an unforgettable, life-changing event.

I've never had the honour of taking part in such a story, and it's an honour i'm glad to share with all my fellow beekeepers. I was just overwhelmed with gratitude and felt the need to express it.

Meh. I'd hook him up to the knife thing and insult his mother. Wink

That whole thing Jan just went through blew something upstairs for me. It's....stirring. This is to say the least, of course.

Because I believe in defending the innocent by any means. Jan doesnt deserve the "treatment" Thin is applying. Nobody does, EVER, even if she did maybe beat him at one of his own games, or be accidentally complicit in the homicide thanks to the dark cop. Nobody could ever possibly justify to me that Thin deserves any modicum of restraint in his.. "treatment." If I had the chance, I would dispose of him as coldly as he ordered his thugs to dispose of J^2s body. If that makes me as bad as he is - so be it. I saved someone else the trouble of having to sink as low as I did - and that's a compromise I'm willing to make.

If that makes me a cold hearted, vicious bastard, then so be it.

This makes you just and nothing more or less. And I'd do the same thing you would.

I have been thinking, and if this was a really good story as well as good advertisement for Halo 2. Kinkle would live. not only as a reminder of just cus your a spatan dosent mean you always win, which i like, but my hope would be that he would live and some how be a charictor in Halo 2 and that I would get the chance myself to blast the crap out of him over and over and over and over......

Steve, that quote from Spencer Tracey is.. haunting and so very appropriate. And I too would rather miss aiming high than even hit aiming low.

FreemanCorporal: You rule. I'd buy it! Laughing

Archon: Give it as a suggestion to Bungie for the "loading" minigame during the inbetween bits of Halo2. Razz

In all seriousness now, though. The outporing of emotion, both negative and positive, had it's effect on me - I got caught up in the groundswell of mainly negative emotion - and broke my own limits and spoke out.. and made a commitment that I would fight for right, always. I too would like to offer thanks to those who opened their hearts and let their emotions show on their sleeve - I've been around the 'Net for quite a long time, and I haven't felt so close to a group of people I've known for such a short period of time in many, many years, if ever.

Everyone here is a part of something special, and whether they agree with everything that happens or not, they're still a part of it, and we should treat them with the respect, the honesty, and the trust that deserves.

Even psychotic maniacs like me. Very Happy

.

Gabriel, you are not psychotic...you just believe that you are capable of that which is necessary to protect liberty. Ethics cannot be quantified mathematically. It is not I/O. Black and white. It exists only within context. That is why there has always been such a debate surrounding it. It is fluid.

For those that distain such a harsh and final reaction to evil, I ask this: Who here believes that a serial killer can be reasoned with?

They cannot. They must be dealt with, and with a resounding finality. We put their heads on a pole for a reason, and it's not simply to be cruel. It is a lesson. A statement of our intent.

We can and should be meek, but if we are unable to defend ourselves then we are ineffective and only so much prey. This is the reason the Shaolin monks perfect their deadly arts. It is the reason that the Spartans of old kept to such a strict lifestyle.

Arete. Do a google search and learn what it means.

[stepping off of the soapbox]

It is strange that I truely do feel drawn into the community here. It took death and shared horror to do it...I'm not sure what that says...but I thank everyone who poured out their souls through thier keyboard. It helped. It was cathartic.

Thankyou.

Sometimes people have to wade in the darkness, so that others may stand in the light.

To do what must be done. To protect others when you can't protect yourself. For the greater good, despite any ill effect it has on you. Some days we need to be reminded of how good and evil we as human beings can become.

That is very true, but I think some of the point is that when we wade into the darkness to beware, we could end up like those we fight. Like Standish, like Kinkle. We have to be able to draw a line to keep things into perspective. I think next week we will see Jan losing perspective and give in to much to her darker side as she tries to avenge her father. Standish in the effort to win the war is trying to kill a 23 year old girl who has done nothing wrong, who would fight just as hard to win this war. Is that the right way to win? We do have to be strong, but we need to be able to know how far not to go.

I just came from a thread discussing in depth the nature of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, only to find this thread discussing the nature of good and evil. And this game is a first person shooter?

I hope someone at Bungie and/or Microsoft is reading this, and the persons responsible for I Love Bees are made aware of just what they have created. In the end, sure, it's a marketing campaign...but in the process, it has managed to affect people's lives in a meaningful way. I wish all marketing campaigns were like that.

Some people may say you shouldn't debase yourself to their level, be no different then them.

But I say screw it, some may feel better about God sorting it all out. But I'd feel much better washing the floor with his brains.

Might even get a few more encounters with him in hell.

Now thats true revenge. Don't just kill and torture them here, take it to the afterlife and make it last an eternity.

Man, I hate how these stories make me sound like psycho. I just have some anger "issues". Embarassed
