She thinks they maybe cryptic crossword clues and "Hugs, if insane" maybe "gush" and "Telamon's girl, occasionally" could be "he is one" (Hesione being a wife of Telamon - one of the argonauts in greek mythology) but we don't know whether those are correct...

Another option for "Telamon's girl" might be Periboea. It fits the clue in two ways because not only was she one of Telamon's wives, but apparently there are 5 known Periboea's in Greek mythology, meaning you might only occasionally be referring to this one in particular...

For the first one, my spec:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

When I think of "Hugs, if Insane" I think of the way your arms are folded across your chest when in a straightjacket. It looks like you're giving a hug to someone.

Not sure how this can help though.

For the second one, my spec:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Telamon is also the name of a character in Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series. His full name was Lews Therin Telamon, also known as the Dragon, and he was a male Aes Sedai (wizard) who ruled the known world until, ironicly enough, he went insane due to a corruption in the male half of "magic" and killed his entire household including his wife, Ilyena, among other things.

In the story, the main character Rand al'Thor is slowly being posessed by the spirit of Lews Therin. At the same time, he just happens to fall in love with no less than three women: Elayne, Aviendha, and Min.

Still not sure how this applies tho.

Excellent spec Alzheimers. I was thinking in the exact same vein as you for your first spec... maybe the answer is "straightjackets"? According to dictionary.com, it's an actual verb
referring to the wearing of a straightjacket...

I think the info you provided in the second spec is good stuff. It feels like a better lead than the mythology angle to me because it fits the clue more appropriately...

Following the previous riddles, the answer should be writable as two words. Also, it should be more literal as the answer to one clue and a twisted answer to the other clue.

Great minds think alike, DB!

Google didn't give any good links between the two. With the way this puzzle has been, I'm not sure we still don't have another clue still left in the story.

edit: I'm thinking about this line:

Quote:
one part soft as a woman, t'other part a barbed hook.

In our new clues, we have mention of a woman and something that signifies holding on to something. If eMouse is right, what we're looking for is another pair of words for each.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The "Hugs, if insane" part, Straight Jacket, seems to follow this convention. The other, the "Telamon's Girl, Occasionaly" clue, isn't so obvious. So how could we combine one of the other words (Straight or Jacket) with what we know to try and make an educated guess as to the meaning?

Straight X or X Straight
Jacket X or X Jacket

The other thing is that when you see words after a comma like that in crossword puzzles, sometimes it signifies a pun or play on words of some sort.

The clue "A flower, Used" could mean Second Hand Rose, for example.

I hope that helps!

My spec for "Telamon's girl, occasionally"

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the clue, was a concubine-- what with the "occasional girl" and all. Now, Hesione was not one of Telamon's wives. She was a concubine. And on top of that, Hesione was a Trojan princess.

So could "Telamon's girl, occasionally" be a "Trojan princess"?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think "straight jacket" is correct. I mentioned that telamon is also a architectural term for a support column (in the shape of a man). And varin thought that the "telamon's girl, occasionally" might have more to do with "support" or supporter" than then the wives of Telamon. I agreed and said maybe something like "moral support" (you know wife supporting husband going to war.

So I had "straight support" and "moral support". Taking the words as before gave "straight support". What is a straight support? a pillar!

http://www.theunraveling.com/pillar.html

(kudos to varin for the "support" idea!

I solved mankind.html again Razz. I emailed Ed about pillar.html and he replied with the following:
Quote:
GB,

Wait, how'd you get pillar.html? That "Telemon's Girl" clue took me a
different way... in Wheel of Time, Lanfear was Telemon's girl. Lews
possesses Rand throughout, but through the history of the book, we
avid fans all know that Lews Therin's lover was Lanfear - she tried
hooking up with Rand at one point too, knowing he was Telamon
reincarnated. I thought the answer to that side was "Lanfear" - what
do you think?

I haven't been able to put it together with the "Occasionally" half yet, though.

-E.V.

He was of course right... Embarassed

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
So "Telemon's girl occasionally" is supposed to be 2 separate clues.

"Telemon's girl" = Lanfear
"Occasionally" = sometimes

Out the 2 together gives fearsome. Out next page (again) is http://www.theunraveling.com/fearsome.html

I told some people that I create puzzles out of thin air sometimes Laughing (now I wonder what "hugs if insane" is for - maybe a straight jacket for me?)

That's definitely weird... are we not supposed to have found pillar yet then? So we should treat 'hugs' and 'if insane' as two seperate clues to another answer? Maybe not so solved after all?

So we accidentally stumbled upon a future answer with pillar? I'm gonna need a visual map of this puzzle trail pretty soon just to keep track of what led us to what. Shocked
