[SPEC] On Rampancy, and AI's going psycho.

Who here has seen 2001; where HAL 9000 goes nuts because he has been given two conflicting sets of orders. 1) peaceful exploratory mission to Jupiter contrasting with 2) super-secret must not fail mission to find alien artefact near Jupiter.

HAL had to lie to the crew because someone at the very top level had given him overriding orders to keep any knowledge of alien artefacts a secret, ultimately he saw the crew as a threat to his mission, went nuts and tried to kill them, and the true nature of the orders was only revealed when he was shut down.

----

Parallels with Herzog, and Melissa/Durga/SP ? We have an intelligent AI, that has something to reveal and there is some spooky spec that Herzog has something to do with the Pious Flea. Could all the fragmenting of Melissa be driven by a conflicting programming scenario as HAL 9000's was?

Just thoughts, I'm a big 2001 fan and I liked the tenuous parallels Very Happy

Hal, btw, was not Rampant. Rest of it makes sense, though.
