On the contrary, I think a resounding majority of us choose and act on acts of generosity and kindness. There's a Questions forum for the purpose of finding your way. These other sections are for being on-topic, timely, and collaborative.

We're desperately trying to (collectively) keep our heads above the waterline, which means that there's dozens of manhours poured into the various resources linked all over the place.

i have been tinkering more with the idea of these prepositions all lack "objects" and the tire shaped "object" found. No luck, though with all the variations I have tried. You all think this may be a dead end trail?

There's a trout free forum? I was refered here specifically for this puzzle (and one other a few weeks ago). It's what ever. I guess at this point you can't really be a new participant without offending the oligarchy. Good luck.

The trout free forum is the new questions section and I have found it to be very useful.

I can see that it would get confusing if someone said "puzzles belong in the puzzle thread" and you posted here and were told "questions like this belong in the question thread." We have an imperfect system.

I don't think you offended anyone. On the contrary, I thought your question was answered. [The puzzles come from the Sleeping Princess.] Anyway, please be assured new participants are welcomed and the community has created lots of resources to assist people to get up to speed.

As for the type of government running unfiction, um, maybe the best idea is to ask spacely. I don't think it's an oligarchy though. Wink

between ideas

I really think the dashes have something to do with this puzzle.
As both clues are "between" dashes and the 21st word counting from both the top and bottom is "between", its atleast something to look at.

Good point. I've tried: between_relationships, between_prepositions, between_propositions, between_relations & between_suppositions (as well as adding in_ before them) to no avail.

get back on topic

Well for the record it is not 'between the lines' or 'behind the times' nor 'sign on the dotted line'. Rolling Eyes

Has any one thought of making up to Dana by asking for her help with this puzzle?

I have emailed the sleeping princess complimenting her on her good puzzles for the week. I also asked her for a hint for our final clues. still no response, but it was worth a shot.

Has anyone noticed how the dashes are only over the word "SOUNDS". Maybe it's supposed to be split- as in (blank) SOUNDS (blank) LIKE. Or maybe it could be we just focus primarily on the word "SOUNDS". Just an idea, but I find it a bit peculiar how everything is so evenly measured up if we weren't supposed to pay attention to that.

I was thinking of one of those picture puzzles where something like

--------
READ
--------

could be taken to mean "read between the lines"

so this:

--------
SOUNDS LIKE
--------

would mean "sounds like between the lines"

If it wasn't for the preposition list, I would hazard that the .wav name sounds like the phrase "between the lines" (e.g., 'clean_the_vines' to give a made-up example). The fact that 'between' is a preposition seems tantalizing, but this doesn't provide any insight why there has to be a list of 41, including some obscure ones like AMID. So I'm not helping... Smile

What e-mail address did you send to, because as far as I'm aware, the ladybee777 address is no longer in the SP's control. Doesn't Melissa have control of that one now? I think the only way we can get in touch with the SP now is via text embedded in pictures and sent to the ladybee777 address, as per SP's dialogue on the contactme page. The text has to be hidden in the pictures, or Melissa will see it. Seems Melissa is unable to view hidden text (at present!). So if you can rig up a picture with a plausible reason for sending it to Melissa, and hide some text in that picture asking the SP for a hint, then that's more likely to get a response IMHO.

- Malrog would do it, but any time he adds text to a picture, it won't open again!

Another random bit of interest.. the lyrics for #41, a song by Dave Matthews Band.

Come and see
I swear by now I'm playing time
I against my troubles
I'm coming slow but speeding
Do you wish a dance and while i'm
In the front
The play on time is won
But the difficulty is coming here

I will go in this way
And find my own way out
I wont tell you to stay
But I'm coming to much more
Me
All at once the ghosts come back
Reeling in you now
What if they came down crushing
Remember when I used to play for
All of the loneliness that nobody
Notice now
I'm begging slow I'm coming here
Only waiting I wanted to stay
I wanted to play
I wanted to love you

I'm only this far
And only tomorrow leads my way

I'm coming waltzing back and moving into your head
Please, I wouldnt pass this by
I would take any more than
What sort of man goes by
I will bring water
Why wont you ever be glad
It melts into wonder
I came in praying for you
Why wont you run
In the rain and play
Let the tears splash all over you

Probably not important, but it seems to bear an uncanny resemblance to our favorite Princess.

Wikipedia also discusses the number 41:
the atomic number of niobium.
the model number of the HP-41C/CV/CX
in A Thousand and One Nights, the number of thieves accompanying Ali Baba.
a number 'encoded' in a lot of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bach may have considered this number a sort of signature, since given A = 1, B = 2, C = 3, etc., then B + A + C + H = 14 and J + S + B + A + C + H = 41.
the code for direct dial international phone calls to Switzerland.
The year A.D. 41, 41 BC, or 1941.
#41 is a song by Dave Matthews Band.
C-41 is the film developing process for 35mm color negative film.

I think it depends on the font displaying the clue. When I open up the CUTEBEE file as text, the embedded text looks more like this for me:
Quote:
- - - - - - - -
SOUNDS LIKE
- - - - - - - -

[Note: I spaced out the dashes to approximate the line length, since the default font here scrunches them up]

Lets solve this thing!!

I found that 4 of the words in the list are Homophones (Homophones are words you pronounce the same, but that don't have the same spelling)

by bye

in inn

past passed

to too two

Thought that this might spark someone.
