Cube in the Times newspaper?

So, I received my Firebox catalogue last Friday and found my way to Perplexcity.com. I then spent most of the weekend catching up on the story so far in this forum. This looks amazing. Why on earth has no-one told me about ARGs before!

Probably coincidence but the very next day (Saturday) I saw this in the Times newspaper (London).

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,7945-1312478,00.html

Perhaps this is the Cube that Sente wants us to solve and return to him Wink

Haunch of Venison?

From this Times article, in the related links there is one called "Haunch of Venison". Being a little taken aback, I clicked on this and got http://www.haunchofvenison.com, which has an image ||/

Relevant??

Hey all, new here. Anyways, this Haunch of Venison site formation reminds me of the strange slashes on the Firebox link. I know Wishi-San has connected them to some binary, but I'm wondering if there's a connection here? Just speculation.

maybe something?

also found this:
http://www.haunchofvenison.com/single.php?item_id=1

seems like art, photography, etc at a gallery called perhaps haunch of venison. you can change the id in the URL to any number, except there is no image for:
3,8,24,35,46,69,73,74,75,76,77,78,79,112,113,143,144,145,146

i stopped at 150 cause maybe this is goin no where. the only remotely interesting one i found. it kinda looks like an upside down version of the ||/ thingy.

http://www.haunchofvenison.com/single.php?item_id=125

anyway. probably nothing. but there it is.

Poking around in the source gave me this url: http://www.haunchofvenison.com/01.html which contains a 360 degree image of a room than can be rotated and zoomed in Quicktime.

I also noticed some javascript that calls urls in the format

http://www.haunchofvenison.com/single.php?item_id=?

where the question mark is some value for the variable 'id'

Substituting single digit numbers worked for 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 9.

10 also worked, but I quit at that point.

[edit] /me needs to learn to type faster Laughing

haunch of venison

a google of haunch of venison seems to show that it is some sort of an online art gallery or something...but those slashes are similar to what previous posts were talking about. could be something or nothing.. Smile

Heya folks ... this Haunchs of Venison site looks ... interesting ... could it be in-game do you think? I'm thinking maybe yes? doesn't seem like a conventional site, with no way to navigate or browse these "works of arts" from the main page ... (looking at the source, there was supposed to be a pop-up? but it never showed up? so maybe its just me) ...

man, have to say, some of these pictures are spooky ... maybe its just me, but I'll looking at them at 3am in the morning here ... and *Spooooooky*!

Got a bit bored of doing my project, so thought I'd check the upper limit of the items. Seems anything past 300 doesn't work at all. Would have checked lower, except I found one especially weird picture that didn't really encourage me to look further. Embarassed

One picture of interest is item 214. Its got like numbers, and words and arrows and stuff, and could easily be some sort of code ... assuming, of course, this whole site is in game ... and if it is ingame, would be easy for them to hide all sorts of information throughout this site ... as "art" ... :p

There is actually a lot of meat to that site (*rimshot*) behind the scenes, but it's not coming up for some reason. There is a membership framework, some sort of shopping cart, and newsletters. If I had to guess, I would guess their database is down at the moment.

This puzzle is very interesting. Lucilky for me, I'm at the 'rentals hous and they've got all the original copies, so no faffing with the printer for me Smile

This quote from the article make things even more interesting:

Quote:
In the 1980s, literary sleuths scoured the country for buried treasure after reading Kit Williams's Masquerade.

Because we all know where we've seen /that/ mentioned before Wink

The puzzles do look quite hard though! Especially the first one :/

There are 218 pictures on that site. The last 8 are all two pictures, something that is different from all the rest. Maybe the solves for each cube will give us a number, and we have to put it in the single.php. The last 18 were all made in 2004. The pictures 3, 8, 24, 35, 46, 69, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 112, 113, 143, 144, 145, and 146 are missing. I think there is a pattern in the missing pictures. I note the 3 * 8 = 24, and all those are missing. Some pictures are labeled and some are not, there may be some significance to this.

Pattern search in missing pics:
The first 3 missing pics all have only 2 factors, not including 1 and themselves:
3 * 8 = 24
Both pictures are missing.

5 * 7 = 35
Using these after single.php? I get two untitled works. Between them(picture 6) is another untitled work.

3 * 23 = 69
picture 3 is missing, 23 is a wall painted white.

The pictures missing after this are groups of pictures
73-79 7 pictures in a row
112-113 2 pictures in a row
143-146 4 pictures in a row

Edit: I took 724 and divided it a bunch of times and got: 2, 2, and 181
That is conceivably 4 * 181 = 724 So I looked at image 181 and found a picture of an orchestra. I'm really grasping at straws, huh?

Umm.. hello.

Just to let you know the cube thing in the times and the website mentioned has nothing to do with the PerplexCity thing.

The artist of the cubes in the photo has made up 6 clues for each cube, and when you've cracked them all you win the piece of art.

Anyone having trouble viewing the faces of the cubes in the popup window? Could just be firefox.

While this clearly isn't Syzygy related it does look interesting. I'd very much like to see what the collective intelligence does to what seems designed as a challenge for an individual.

I personally don't think they're related but if anyone is in London keep your eyes open. I've noticed no discussion anywhere about the fourth picture on thepage you go to when you follow the PerplexCity seal link. It seems to show a banknote and it says London on it. So the fact that this was in the London Times may be germane.
