one thing you also haveto note is that it supports numbers, letters and symbols and input as well. So, I think cracking it is out of the question. Also, I believed someone mentioned earlier that the site had been taken apaprt and it was confirmed that there is no actual passcode for that part.

Re: [SPEC] Forerunner and Covenant symbols

MrToasty wrote:
OK, this is a bit of spec that is related to the Halo 2 site puzzle, but may end up being a bit OT.

We've seen what are assumed by most to be Forerunner symbols before in Halo as seen on the Halo Story page, which are essentially circles with markings on them. Now, on the Covenant technology pages (weapons page and vehicles page) on the new site, a symbol appears partially obscured by each item. Again, they are all circles with markings on them. They look different than the Forerunner symbols though. Where the Forerunner symbols look smooth and clean (like a sans serif font), these new symbols have more of a calligraphic look.

I'm guessing that these symbols are the more "flourished" script of the Covenant, based on Forerunner that was described in the books and mentioned elsewhere on this board. Only the technology on the site (which may have been coopted by the Covenant from Forerunner worlds) have these symbols, not the images of the various species. This could mean that only those things directly derived from or related to the Forerunner have a Covenant script symbol.

(etc.)

Don't you guys go getting slow on me! One of the first things that jumped out at me was the forerunner symbols on the STAR MAP page, which you must not have seen to omit from your theory! Go check it out, it's in the covenant tech. inner ring... The galaxy map with all the systems marked out... there's a forerunner circle next to every one of them, and these aren't calagriphic, these look exactly like the ones in the game.

*is happy he contributed something*

Now if only we knew what these symbols mean...

UPDATE: Upon further inspection, some of the forerunner symbols on this page are exactly like the ones found in halo and documented on the halo story page, but some appear to be new and undocumented. Someone needs to save them for a rainy day, they just might come in handy! I for one think these symbols will come out to mean something eventually like the covenant alphabet we're playing with like kids with cereal-box decoder rings.

Um, I think if you read all the way through what I wrote, you'll see that I commented on those symbols as well:

Oh, while I'm on the topic, it also looks like each of the places denoted on the galactic map also have a Forerunner symbol associated with them... Pretty obvious, but I hadn't seen in mentioned yet.

Yes, I noticed that as well. Either these are new Forerunner symbols or the Halo Story page is incomplete. I'm hoping they are new.

Anyone else think Cortana looks.... different? Not just the hair (which looks sort of wierd sloped forward), but her facial structure and nose is different. I bet they *were* trying to make her hotter... but they really ended up making her look different, which is sort of annoying in terms of continuity.

Eddy: Yeah. I thought it was just me since I havn't played the game that much, but... I guess it's not. Either that, or it's just that she's solider in this picture than she seems in the in-game shots that I've seen of her before.

Those screens will accept keyboard input, but you have to do it fairly quickly after the page loads or it will time out, in which case you would need to cycle back and forth to try again.

Or you can just hit tab to highlight what's clickable, and when you get to the left screen, hit tab once more. Then you can type again. Note that if you hit tab after the yellow box disappears, you will input a tab as a character in the password :)

Yes, Cortana is different in Halo 2. As the site says, she has a new hair-do and in my opinion she looks more life like.

i don't believe anyone has found the passwords yet. from what i've gathered, we're not sure that the site will even accept passwords yet... which would infer that we'll get them later either through the game or through ILB!

Passcodes accepted @ Halo2.com -- found the answer.

We can use any tools and/or knowledge at our disposal to solve a puzzle, right? Let's say I'm a web programmer and discovered the Halo2.com site structure, decompiled the individual Flash files on the site and looked at the source code to get right to the answer and end the speculation...does that cross any fine ethical lines walked by ARGers? Everything I've dug into has been freely available on the web, and thus far similar techniques have all been fair game in ILB (if not encouraged), so I went ahead. If it's not a big taboo, read on.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The folder where the "prophet" Flash files are located is called "50_propaganda", interestingly enough. The three areas with passcodes which appear to be distinct are actually all driven by the same file--"50_security.swf"--according to the XML file that is used by the Flash loader. The code inside 50_security.swf indicates that ANY KEYPRESS increments a counter variable, and when that variable is greater than or equal to 6, it plays an animation in another frame (the flashing red sequence). In other words, there is no password that will work at this time, in my opinion. They will most likely be making passcodes and their resultant "secured" areas available gradually over the next few weeks, in the tradition of ILB. FYI, there's no additional code or image assets in the 50_security.swf file that could be "unlocked"...I expect that these files will be replaced in the site structure as the secrets are meant to be discovered.

I love this stuff Cool

What if the content was just located outside of the SWF file?

there would still need to be a command to direct the flash to it somewhere... or to direct the flash to a password handler if one was active...

Passcode answer...

SuperJerms wrote:

Good thought, but the point is that there's no code that even handles a correct password attempt, much less anything that would load any external resources or redirect to another .SWF. I've been coding Flash for 6 or 7 years now, and I can say with confidence that the .SWF with the security code entry is pretty much just a dumb shell at the moment. It's a smart move on the part of the site authors to try to account for snoopy and resourceful viewers, as I'm sure they are.
