I feel strangely homicidal, go figure.
Anyway, it was probably some European French SONY employee.

That would be my helicopter, by the way... not M$'s. I hate these people about 45% as much as I hate Thin Kinkel. And that's a lot.

I saw $100k fine as well. I think someone typoed the 10k number.

Hey man - they're everywhere - you say stuff like that and they'll get you, just because you know about them!

We live in the FEAR society man, watch what you say and they wont hurt you!!

Rolling Eyes

I'm still T'Oed that some French Warehouse worker or whatever ruined Halo 2 (through leaking the game and the people posting leaked crap)

Why would anyone do this? yes, but the main draw to distributing warez isn't necessarily just getting something for free... as someone pointed out earlier who was in 'the biz', the draw gets to be so much more an attitude of 'stick it to the man' - they might view this as an enormous challenge to be rewarded for by reputation and credit - who can pirate the biggest game ever to be released by the biggest software organization in the world - and get away with it? Personally, I think whoever did this couldn't care less about how amazing Halo 2 is/will be... they just wanted bragging rights to the first distribution of Halo 2. And you can bet if they were smart enough, they will be hard to track down. That doesn't necessarily take money in order to be invisible, just lots and lots of skill...

The question is, is MS skillful enough in return, regardless of their wallet size, to track this/these sob(s) down... Exclamation

we shall see... we shall see...
I hope they have a red button Smile

Yeah... I know. The rep you could get for pulling this big of a wool over M$'s eyes would be quite large. But you made the key point yourself.

I don't think anyone, anywhere can escape the mighty clutches of the Microsoft legal team.

I mean, c'mon. Billy G lives in a mansion where as you enter you get a personalized chip and the rooms respond to you entering them. What can't he do?

It's the thrill of the take. Of having something you're not supposed to, and having it before everybody else. Very few people who do this would go into a store and steal the game. But online piracy is from their view victimless.

For example I have this 'friend' (who is definitely not me by the way...) who used to be into that kind of thing before he reformed. Star Wars Episode II was available online about a week or so before it hit theaters. The quality was crap (and the movie wasn't so hot either), but he got it anyway, just to have it, despite having no real desire to watch it early. It can be as much of an addiction as any physical substance. Or so my 'friend' tells me...

I'm not justifying it, just trying to answer why someone would download Halo 2.

ThunderClap got it right, it is the thrill of the take. In that world, you are always trying to better your rep, always trying to do what the next person couldn't. Thats why you always see multiple versions of virus's, there is always someone trying to do better than the last person. For instance, most of the half life 2 source got stolen and leaked, now this person or group of persons is trying to one up by getting the whole version of Halo 2.

Even if M$ isn't skillfull enough, the combination of the Feds and M$ will be. This is an international affair now, and it now falls into the feds hands and any other country that we have extradition rights with. You can bet the Germans will crack down on it if it gets widespread in their country. They are not to keen on this kind of stuff. A GUARANTEE, the leak will be tracked down eventually. M$ will put out a reward for info, and one of his so called buddies will turn him in, or some independent will help M$ find him. One thing to remember, no matter how good you are, there is always someone better.

I recall that when Valve had their troubles last September, there were several groups that created fake downloads to dilute the chances that someone would get an actual leaked version - torrents for 3 gigabyte bitmaps, etc.

Ah well, there is an upside - if any of these jerks want to play Live, they're still going to have to buy the game. Not exactly a silver lining, but perhaps aluminum or tin.

What's truly funny is there's a pretty decent chance I'll be playing on Live Nov 10th, and at some point hear someone (stoned off their rocker) say how they are teh leet gamerz cause of how they practiced on their pirate copy three weeks before the game came out, and so they're obviously better than all of us.

EDIT: because I can truly spell truly.

ok, why? WHY?
note, there's also a link in the thread of a place to get it, which I did not visit, and the general attitude there seem to be 'cool', not "GET RID OF IT"

yes, we know the release is real. no need to post screen clips to prove it.
Jeeez...
