I do believe it's a 50 quid note -- but this is the wrong thread and anyway it's been well investigated --- so far results = 50 quid note Smile

And I thought my sister was kidding when she told me to get my eyes tested... thanks, I'll have a look for the right thread then.

Originally discussed in this thread.

Don't let these remarks discourage you! It's good to have another set of eyes on this "project". Keep digging and trying different angles. If there is anything left to find, a fresh perspective may help illuminate it for the rest of us. Good luck and keep posting! Very Happy

My intention was never to discourage anyone, and I'm pretty sure da5id would feel the same. I was simply trying to point Jonny_Boy_Chemist in the right direction to save him working on stuff that's already been covered. I can't speak for everyone of course, but personally I'm happy to welcome new people to the forum (I did say "Welcome to the forum" in my post) and I'd guess most people feel the same. Hope I didn't cause any offence but I feel that at the very least beginners should be able to click in the The Cube / Perplexcity, beginners LOOK HERE thread - 2nd and 3rd posts link to the tranZed primer and Nik_Doof has a link to the Wiki in his sig on the 3rd post. Surely not that much of a stretch?

P.S. not trying to flame anyone here, just trying to clarify my POV. Mods - if I'm getting to far OT with this post then PM me and I'll delete.

ACK! will you guys stop worrying about offending me? Thanks for the tips and the pointers, but seriously, I've got pills to keep me for getting unhappy so forget about it, please.

Anyway, I think i found something, so I'm trying to find the right thread to post in now... this may take a while Confused

And as an after thought i think maybe i should apologies for not making what i was asking clearer, but i did search for "£10 note" and the like before i bothered posting, i just didn't make it obvious that i was on about the note itself, not the place name. So: I'm sorry for wasting peoples time.
And i did read the newbie thing, but thanks for the link anyway.

i think tanner has been personally banging his head about this one....but i dont think much came of it. (apart tanner with a headache)

In an effort to reduce the size of the lump that must be forming on the top of tanner's head, thoughts re: water, acetone and liquid mercury.

Answer: SPACE/VACUUM?

1. Why *liquid* mercury? For mercury to be liquid it must be at a temperaure above -38.83 centigtade (can't find the little circle thingy for the C!). VERY COLD

2. If no water it must be kept DRY.

3. No acetone. According to my advanced chemistry, well er no, googled acetone, and the 1st entry said acetone was found naturally in the water and *air* (government site about toxic substances). So, NO AIR.

VERY COLD + DRY + NO AIR = SPACE/VACUUM

Please, please, please tanner tell me if this helps with the bump.

Mima

How about just not pouring mercury on it? Keeping it cold to prevent it from coming into contact with liquid mercury seems odd. And to be honest, I doubt that the trace amounts of acetone in the air would affect it. I think what they are saying is... don't pour water, acetone, or mercury on it.
I'm guessing alcohol is ok then? Razz

Well, to take Tanner's reply here a bit further:
tanner wrote:
water shorts out electrical stuff

True (well, unless it's extremely pure).

tanner wrote:
mercury ruins the look of gold (forms an alloy)

Gold is frequently used for electrical contacts because it's very conductive and unreactive and so makes good connections without needing to be soldered. The alloy is probably less conductive and almost certainly more likely to react with the air. Also, mercury will form short circuits even better than water.

acetone dissolves plastics

And circuit boads are printed on layers of a type of plasticy resin. This is a bit of a stretch though - I don't think it's soluble in acetone. In fact, I'm pretty sure that acetone is widely used to clean electrical components.

All of which may point to it being electrical, but perhaps I just see that because I spent so long studying electronics.....

if you put acetone on modern electronics youre in big trouble -- no-one would use it for cleaning -- usually you use IPS or similer

im in the trade Smile

and those quotes of mine were a joke from months ago

All this talk about vacuums.., I'm sure i saw a book recently "a perfect vacuum" anyone heard/read it? Although with such a tenuous thought there could be clues hidden inside a Dyson user manual Laughing

Does acetone react with gold at all? We may not be talking a normal circuit board like we are used to...

Also... two more questions. What, exactly, is acetone (thinking along the lines of ingredients and/or elements)? Two, what happens when acetone, water, and liquid mercury are combined (does it form some specific chemical, etc)?

One more thing... look at the wording of the advertisement... "water, acetone, OR liquid mercury..." leading us to believe that there is one common substance that reacts with all three of these things...

Hope this helps... i'm not a chemistry person, i'm an english language person...

why do you assume Liquid Mercury means very cold? Isnt Mercury used in thermometers because its a liquid at room temperature?

ABOVE -38.83 centagrade dosen't mean it has to be COLD at all.
mercury doesn't boil till 674 F or 629 C
temp. isn't really a limiting factor we could just be talking about a clean room with a very controled air cleanning system.

hope the following helps

Gold is extremely inert and doesn't react with acetone. It does react with hydrogen cyanide (which is used to leach the gold from rocks) and can be extracted by certain extremophilic bacteria (my second favourite bacteria... and unnecessary information)

I would say that the acetone would dissolve in the water and you'd end up with a beaker of an acetone solution with a lump of mercury sat at the bottom...not the most exciting chemistry ever! This made me think about something actually, mercury was used in thermometers for years, but due to its toxicity is being replaced by acetone (I think) which is the red liquid you get in modern thermometers.

all you could ever want to know about acetone from the wonderful Chemfinder.com
