[SPEC] Quaerere Initium Sapientiae

Ok, evidently, since we are in 2005, I can't wait for some new evidence...
...so, aside from reading about mathematical wars in the other thread (who needs fundamentalists and fanatics when we have mathematicians?), what could I do?

I looked back at the project syzygy page with the composite image (http://www.perplexcity.com/indexB.html) and I figured that 'Quaerere Initum sapientiae' could be interesting to look up.

Of course, nothing showed up with all 3 words (sigh), but with 'Initium Sapientiae' I stumbled upon this:
http://f01.middlebury.edu/FS010A/STUDENTS/Minerva/002.JPG
and its parent page:
http://f01.middlebury.edu/FS010A/STUDENTS/contents.htm

Maybe, probably it's just coincidence... but anyone else knows anything about this minerva britanna project?

F.O.R.
PS: hei, at least I made you read something that is not a math proof !

Wait...you don't think there's such a thing as mathematical fundamentalists and fanatics?

I hate to break it to you, but while the specific things the people to whom we usually refer as "fundamentalists" argue over may be religious, their attitudes can be found in every discipline.

Well, quaerere initium sapientiae means "to seek the beginning of wisdom," if that helps.

I know, I know... and I could even proove it to you, with infinite precision Smile

Actually I would have translated it as
"To ask is the beginning of knowledge", assuming there was an implicit "est"
(as in "quaerere initium sapientiae [est]") which is often omitted in high latin, but both translations could fit, since the one part of the sentence we are missing is, indeed, the verb (which is where you start from to translate latin Smile ).

Anyway, I looked a bit more to that site and it certainly seems off game. There's even a whole essay about that image of the snake on the sword.. interesting stuff. Probably it's out of game, but the info there might eventually come handy -who knows.

Cheers,
F.O.R.

I just tried to go there and got "forbidden" screens for each one. I wonder why it would change so suddently?

And thus I rest my case... I'm mocked regardless of the topic.
Thank you very much, even if it is in jest.

But, I'd agree that any site that refers to the latin phrase most likely is OOG, since it's a simple latin statement which itself seems to be related to the ARG.

I just re-clicked and did not get any forbidden error...
...try again?

Shocked

No no no, please do *not* take that personally...
...I was honestly taunting the thread as a whole, nobody specifically.

If I wanted to pick on anyone, or anyone's specific statements, I'd do it by quoting the statement and specifying the person. Honestly.

Apologies... thanks, I do still want to be able to take part in discussions like a normal forum-goer Wink

I guess we're just itching to get the next big puzzle... Smile

I personally think the latin quote is more of a "thematic element". I mean, well, without being obvious, here's my obvious answer. Wink

I think it's natural for a university to have latin in its missives. I think the translation is apt for not only the university aspect, but the game itself. And beyond that... well, there's nothing. But I also think thebruce is off the deep end. Just kidding... That dude rocks. But so does Ariock. And so does that buff dude, Dorkmaster, I've heard so much about...

(Trying so hard not to make e-number thread jokes... really... it hurts.)

DING! Aaaaand Dorkmaster gets the point. Sometimes we tend to speculate too much on things. It's a motto for the game [and the academy] imo too...

ARGh, they locked it (sigh, it was actually rather entertaining !)

(souble)sigh,

PS: Dorkmaster, I agree with you. I just figured that checking if the motto would bring anything up was better than assuming it was simple flavour text Smile

I'd rather say, enlightening Smile but yeah... it's unfortunate. Though PM's are still good Smile. But that's frustrating cuz then you end up possibly saying the same things to multiple people because it's not a public gathering of comments... but oh well. I was actually loving it, and I disagree that it was pointless drivel... but that's the moderator's call, and must be respected. So who wants to take the chat elsewhere? Razz

Definitely, we can't leave any question unanswered... if it's not already been asked and answered, ask it... even if it's a dead end, it might lead someone elsewhere productively, so you never know.

And I don't think anyone commented on the latin phrase before this thread, so it's a good thing Smile

While we're considering the phrase which I think we've got as far as we can with, it's just a Latin phrase, we can also think how different the world Perplex City is in really is from ours.

Like many of ours, they have universities with Latin mottoes. Is it a parallel universe? If so, it's obviously followed a similar path to ours in its history. Perhaps it's not a parallel universe as such, as it has existed in the same way as ours but is simply further ahead say 200 years or so.

Well, its quite obvious the universe is at least slightly like our own, they speak english, have academies, know of our world, use the decimal counting system, have developed photography, build buildings as rectangles, use paper, use email, and many other things, that all go to show their universe is VERY like our own, and because of that, a latin phrase isnt that weird.

Personally, I think the latin phrase is a themical object, demonstrating the nature of this academy, or just scenery, to make it look better.

Either way, it *has* been discussed before, if I can remember correctly, but hey, rehashes are always good, especially with the increasing amount of new fellows.

It could be a time travel thing. They may be in the future and the cube might have something to do with time travel.
