I'm heading out to Griffith Park after work.

Anybody going there with a GPS tracker? The map I have is in the middle of nowhere.

Is anybody going to the 17:35 one?

It should be somewhere around here - near the pizza place, or Cornerstone, or maybe on the outside of one of the classrooms. Also, I am attaching an image from terrafly - I think it should be in the vicinity of the red X - as opposed to the circle that terrafly marks it with. Here is a map of the general area, but I suspect that mapquest marked the exact spot wrong as well. So, since I am not sure exactly where this would be, and it is possible there are many phones in the area, it'd be cool if someone was coming with a GPS, or simply if a few people were coming so we could cover more than one phone.

Also, I haven't been able to find a payphone at this location (which, of course, doesn't mean it's not there), but I think it would start as 949-824-xxxx.

Please post here or PM me if you're planning to go, so we could meet up.

That UCI one is pretty close to me, but I can't make it tonight. If you don't get it today, I will try to help out tomorrow.

Also, the one at the Block didn't seem to go hot today either, I can run by there on my way to work tomorrow, but I wanted to confirm with HitsHerMark first that its the phone around the corner from the Virgin Megastore. Let me know.

Also also, does anyone have an OC list yet? The only ones I know of are the Block, UCI, and the Wax Museum one (which doesn't appear to be activated this round).

2 outstanding LA axons

16:43 PDT // 34.070754 -118.361406 // real
(East side of Fairfax at Blackburn, just south of 3rd St)

Coordinates are smack-dab on top of a bank of four payphones outside the Sav-On. Unfortunately, the phones do not accept incoming calls. They have listed numbers, but when you call them, the phones don't ring, they just make a *chunk* sound, and if you pick up an incoming call on them you get either a "phone out of order" message or a "please wait a moment" message, which repeats a few times, and then the line goes dead.

I did manage to hear the phone *chunk* at the proper time and pick it up, but wasn't able to get a connection to Melissa. (Nor does the site even read 'AXON CONNECTED'.) The number of the bad phone is 323-932-9536; definitely the RIGHT phone, just no way to make it work.
[edit: I even tried popping in some quarters as the call came in. Two were instantly spit back out at me; the third got jammed.]
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16:03 PDT // 34.076978 -118.388915 // asset
(SW corner of Beverly Blvd & Wetherly Dr)

There's a payphone smack dab on these coordinates (310-858-9867), and it rings (in an anemic fashion), but I've been to this location twice now and the phone hasn't been rung by the Operator.

There's also a bank of four phones just outside the Ralph's nearby; I couldn't cover all of the phones by myself today but none of them rang the last time I was there.

Fortunately this code group is active so there's no dire need to activate this axon.

Hey Troublecat,

Did you hit that axon back when it was with the first group? "You_Could" or whatever?

I was there last Tuesday.

I'm 0/3.

I'll be at the Claremont axon for "real".wav tomorrow. It's 5 minutes from my house I just found out. I just had to let out a shout of joy.

But I have a problem. The foothill-mountain 4 way intersection has 2 gas stations, an Albertsons(I think) and an A&W restaurant. That'sa lotta payphones. Any tips for my first (and likely only) activation?

Robyn, one of the Emergency axons is right by disney's DCA park, literally 300 feet from the tower of terror ride. We still have yet to activate it Sad

Those are the only two I think in OC... It looks on the map like there might be one more... But I think it's Claremont.

I didn't go to the Block this morning, it's the phone on your right, next to the Starbucks, if your back is to the Virgin. (Not a word outta any of you, ya hear me?) But I'm going to be there around 8:00 8:30 AM in the morning. Let's meet at the Starbucks by Virgin Megastore?

If we meet in the morning at the Block for 9:09 we can co-ordinate for the Irvine axon later in the day at 17:35. (since it got fubared today) We know EXACTLY where it is.

Okay - I just got down here from home, in Palo Alto, where there was an influx of axons.... Evil or Very Mad

However, now I'm down at college here in Los Angeles, I may as well help out.

I can get the Burbank (media city center) [34.183148, -118.311792 || 16:07 || I-hate-you] axon, with any luck.

I'll also try to get the Hollywood Way axon [34.194096 -118.348745 || 17:59 || Creepy] - this may be harder, depends on if I'm eating dinner early or late. I'll update tommorow yes or no, when I know.

These are the ones that are most convenient to me, so yah. Good luck, other Los Angeles beekeepers.

ETA: I may also try to go for the Griffith Park axon - but we shall see. Moe - did you find any payphones there? I saw that you said you were going, but its not activated.

Frensa, are you sure you have the right Mountain Ave? There's another one between Indian Hill and Towne (about 10-12 blocks West of the Mountain you describe) that seems to be referenced by Mapquest and Acme. It's got a Chevron, and a strip mall with a Ralphs.

Of course, we haven't had too much luck with that location so far, so the joke may be on us. Dunno

I think I chose poorly on my route to the Griffith Park axon. I followed Canyon Dr. A friend of mine said that it would be better to follow Beachwood Dr. up to the stables. If I can escape from work, I might try again.

Having no boss today, I decided to venture out and hit the Los Angeles Axon for 4:59 p.m. It was quite a drive that ended up at the Sunset Ranch, a horse ranch in the hills around the Hollywood sign. I had to park my car and walk up a ways to the buildings.

The only pay phone I saw was attached to the front of stables, surrounded by "cowboys."

I walked up and asked if there were any other pay phones around.

"Nope."

So I asked if that pay phone accepted incoming calls.

"Yep. It's our business line."

I told them that I was expecting it to ring at 4:59 p.m. They looked at me kinda strange, so I explained that it was part of a game. One of the girls perked up.

"Halo 2."

Yeah.

"My boyfriend's into all that. I know I'm gonna lose him on November 9th."

The girl and I had a nice little chit chat (I had 15 minutes until the phone was gonna ring). It was her first day there. She was just lending a hand, didn't really know everybody yet. Then I listened to the "cowboys" talk about how Ralph Machio from the Karate Kid looked just like the girl from Flashdance.

Finally the phone rang. No one moved, so I picked it up. Before I could get the receiver to my ear, one of the "cowboys" whoaed me and took it.

"Hello. Can I help you?" Pause. "Can I help you?" Pause. Then he hung up. "Some kind of recording."

He went off talking about telemarketers and how with their recordings you can hang up all the sooner, completely oblivious to the conversation I'd had with him fifteen minutes earlier about expecting a call.

I glanced at the girl I'd been talking to, and she gave an "I'm sorry" look.

So I strolled back down to my car.

Now I'm 0/3. I'd tell the PM's to give up on that number.
