I don't know where you're looking, but on amazon.com "Beauty: The New Basics" has a picture of a woman's head on the cover.

Since smoker is pretty much done, there are four possible dictionary-word combinations possible for those five letters:
DEEMS
DEEDS
DEEDY
DEERS

... as "Diuretic", "Emetic", and "Eyes" are pretty much set in stone and agreed upon.

The second word, from BEEWITHH, also has five plants, the only one we're sure of which is the last one, Madder, which "yields the color" Red.

DEEMS _ _ _ _ R ?
_ _ _ _ R DEEDS?

How would we apply "superseded by"? What does that even mean, anyway? 1) to cause to be set aside/to force out as inferior; 2) to take the place/position; 3)to displace in favor of another

Basically, "replace".

If it's medicinal, there might well be a drug that supercedes its purpose and noone used the plant any more.

the third one in beewith is definitely cure for malaria, whether you take it as quinine or that bark plant.

so I think we actually have _ _ M _ R DE E/H M/L S/Y

Correct. But it's a picture of a person, who moves by foot. The picture of a dog isn't a husky, it's just a dog. I must admit that the subtitle also sounds pretty good as an alternative clue.

I'm thinking along the lines of either: A medicinal use that has been superseded by modern drugs, in which case we need the name of the modern drug; or it's rapeseed which produces rapeseed oil, the heavier component of which is a base in vegetable oil, and the aromatic light oil is a type of mustard.

I figured it would be something like cornflower or flax or some other such simple product that we don't really use because we have better domesticated plants.

I don't know where pennyroyal induces menstruation comes from, but:

Its action is carminative, diaphoretic, stimulant and emmenagogic

Meaning of DIAPHORETIC
1. [n] used to produce perspiration
2. [adj] inducing perspiration

And eyebright is used in the treatment of sight (eyes) if an S is needed.
