Melissa question

If this belongs in the General Forum, I'll repost there. I wish I could just search through the forums to figure this out, but frankly I'm not sure how to search; so I'll ask here if it's ever been SPEC'd. If not, I'll format it as one and keep this place trout-free. Smile

Aside from the SPDR using his commands to rebuild the Operator, has it ever been discussed just how an AI and a 26th century diagnostic tool can run on a modern computer? Are there any theories out there about this? What keywords should I use in regards to it?

...or are we, in regards of the story/game, just supposed to accept that such advanced software could run on very old hardware?

Thanks!

You've got questions, i've got long posts... i mean answers.

To my knowledge, the process is somewhat tricky to understand, but is explained somewhat in the operator's monologues and in the fairy tale told very early on in the game.

Allow me to try and find it for you:
The Bruce is an endlessly helpful resource for me personally; i'll link his game transcript page: http://www.thebruce.ca/ilovebees/

If you click on the *Full Text Timeline and then look for the Phase 1 text, it might clear some things up.
In the SP's column, there's the fairy tale, describing action in abstract terms. Then there's the SPDR code, which uses a more finite, but harder to understand language. Finally, in Melissa's column, it has her reactions to both the situation and the spider's actions.

To my understanding, the SPDR scanned and at first did not recognize the magnetic data storage medium (read: hard drive) of the ILB server. Then it switched its running processes from recognizing the (possibly silicon based?) pre-accepted storage medium, to the present storage medium. In such a way, it was able to find and resuscitate the remnants of Melissa on the ILB server. In addition, i believe the "chatter protocol ancestor" is the physical network for the server. In other words: the roads going to and from the castle, the same roads that lead to the axons.

As far as how the SPDR was able to start up in the first place, that's anyone's guess. Perhaps there's a physical remnant of Mel's old storage medium that's somehow linked through time to the ILB server?

Oh, and one last thing, TheBruce is likely overflowing with traffic (much of it mine); his site is just that useful. It's been said before, but deserves further mention: bravo Bruce.

heh well thanks... the fulltext is actually a very large page Smile right now most traffic is on the axon tanscripts, but the fulltext is kind of like a 'phase 1' for my compilations... the end of that is pretty much the start of heavy character interaction, and there's just too much text to stick on the one page... in the end, I'll get everything in one source, but not on one page... for now, there's the fulltext, then the relevent continuation of in-game content is through the Axon Plot...

but ya, that was the intent - a one spot source for everything in-game w/o spec... Smile

now continue with your conversation Wink

Hmm. I think that answers my question. Thank you.

Now if I can just muster the courage to post a spec with NO evidence. Smile

Go for it! Wild spec is the nectar of the gods.... and the trout. Worry not what others will think; perhaps your spec will lend itself to the logic path that leads to the answering of one of the great questions of the game.

You'll still need to be able to argue the validity of your spec if you want it to reach acceptance, but some simply throw spec out there on the off chance that it's relevant. I personally see no problem with this, as long as you can logically argue that it's reasonable.
