This is a bit of a reach, but it could be argued that Herzog *isn't* dead. Let's start out by assuming (big assumption) that Herzog's chatter stays with him during the course of events (I'm assuming it could be like a handsfree/headset device, yes).


Here's the timeline of discernable sounds:
-Sound of brakes squeeling
-crashing/impact sound
-explosion
-splashing sound
-chatter goes dead

Now, I'm probably being too technical here, but if Herzog was still in the car on impact, the recording wouldn't include the explosion (how could it? it would be destroyed). Realistically, it would be

-Sound of brakes squeeling
-crashing/impact sound
-chatter goes dead (maybe an explosion sound for fraction of a second)

So, there's the slim chance that Herzog was able to jump out of the car and land "safely" in the water, and the *water* made the chatter go dead.


However, even if he was able to escape, he's still going 350km/h. If he jumped out onto pavement, the road rash would kill him, and if he hit the drink the impact would still likely take him out. Keep in mind he's getting on in years. My guess is that the sound file didn't play out more realistically because it woudn't make for good drama.

Still, there is the extremely small chance that he didn't fall ill with the "flu".

He may very well be alive. That wasn't a crash. Standish mentions a "bridge" I believe after listening to the .wav that the "explosion" was actually the car landing in a body of water.

Going as fast as he was, it is unlikly that anyone could possibly survive. But, it is entirly possible.

I at first thought it was an explosion. But after listening to it a few more times I think you may be right, Incitatus. That would deffinatly be interesting if he did survive.

 		part of the story
This is Rani's story. As one of the few heroes of the wave stories, her story has to progress through the point of needing a guide and protector. Herzog provided protection for her (Standish won't dare touch her now that the Admiral has put up the No Trespassing sign.) Now she is on her own. I suspect that her boyfriend is in serious danger. I haven't decided if he will make it or not. Given the ways these stories are going, I think she is in for more heartbreak.

This is a long way of saying: Herzog is dead.

 		BIG SPOILER!!!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Hertzog isn't dead! SPEC was correct in that his vehicle hit the water and skipped (going 270 MPH) giving safety systems time to engage. He's pretty beat up, but still alive. Better yet, Standish thinks he's dead (so does Durga, quite a convincing accident), giving him a very valuable edge over Standish.
