Visual Mediums

No one knows whether these are doing any good, but I had to put my toe into the ring:
Quote:
Melissa,

Please see the enclosed attached images of current and future
technology. First, you will see the contemporary standard
(SGTatdt_small.jpg). This is what 99% of the population uses to view
their computational work. A small part of society uses a head-mounted
display, as you'll see in the second image - this is our most advanced
display. Finally in that second image you will see what I envision
visual displays will be like in your time period.

just checking

Just to make sure, has anyone got a response yet from the pictures? I realize the Op must have a lot of incoming data to parse, but she was pretty swift on the last batch of pic processing.

obviously, we have no idea if these are what Melissa had in mind. But it doesn't hurt to try.

Melissa,

This is an example of what they call a "skyscraper". In 2004,
engineering and architectural progress is thought to be nearing the
limits of the field. How amusing. Obviously, there are little to no
provisions for backup power, shielding/plating for incoming attacks,
or transportation hubs for flying aircraft. And it barely "scrapes
the sky".

I did my best attempt at recreating some of the more familiar
structures that I remember from Earth City while I was stationed
there. Much more pleasing design, and functional, too. Plus, it
reaches approximately four times higher than the highest structures
circa 2004.

my entry

Well, my photoshop skills aren't the best, but I'm hoping the creative explanation will make up for it. Smile

Here's what I sent:

Hello Melissa,

I understand that you want to learn more about the time we've been trapped in. I find it very different, myself. As an illustration of some of the differences, I'm sending you a picture of a location near where I was shipwrecked. Conveniently, it is a place I recognize from my childhood. My family used to vacation at this location, which is called "Disneyland." Perhaps you've heard of it. It is located on the Island of California, in the Los Angeles Climate Dome.

You can clearly see the Dome in the picture I've attached from our time. Please excuse the poor quality of this image - I had trouble converting it
from holographic stream to a still image usable with primitive technology. You'll also see the glow-fabric fashionable in my childhood (this was taken in 2538), along with some toys of our day - my brother is riding his hoverboard in the foreground, and someone in the back is wearing rocketshoes.

You might be surprised, as I was, to learn that in 2004 California is still connected to the North American continent. Also, as you can see in the
picture, the Climate Dome has not yet been erected. The sky is quite blue!

Otherwise, Disneyland has changed little in the past few centuries.

I hope this helps you understand where we find ourselves. It's been helpful for me to compare the two.

~Angela

Operator, I understand your immense fondness for bees, so this time I have a present for you.

The bees of 2004 are highly misunderstood. Humans should take into consideration that because of bees, many people have food. People are afraid of bees becaue they sting, and even then it's more like a pinch. People go out and kill bees or try to tame them and steal their honey. Bees do not deserve this treatment. Bees are pivotal in engineering research as well. Some bees are so aerodynamic that they shouldn't be able to fly by human laws of physics. Judged, killed, treated as slaves, and bees prevail.

The bees of 2552 should be highly respected and idolized. People will take after the bee and will try to fly, and attack, like them.

Perhaps beyond that, bees will finally be appreciated and there will be vast homages to their contributions to humans. As of 2004, the world's largest Killer Bee resides in Texas.

For some reason, Melissa didn't recognize my answer of "reach" to today's phone question, so I had some time to put this together.

Seems like everyone is going for armor, cars, and weapons. Is there no one who appreciates the beauty of common office supplies?

Yes, it's boring, but I like to keep it simple.

Well, I was having trouble figuring out a physical item, so I went for a social construct. Here is the letter I sent. Warning, it is a bit long and is not my best example of logical reasoning ever. Hopefully Melissa will like it.

Quote:
Hi Melissa,

I do not have access to good photo editing equipment, so I will try to show you an example of a social construct. Be prepared, this is a little long because I want to do more than just show pictures; I want to give you a mental image of how a particular social construct has shaped the history of Earth in this era.

The first book with "social construction" in its title was Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's The Social Construction of Reality, first published in 1966 by Doubleday, New York. (http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Social_construct) According to Ian Hacking, social constructs have two traits:
" (0) In the present state of affairs, X is taken for granted; X appears to be inevitable. (Hacking 1999, p. 12)
(1) X need not have existed, or need not be at all as it is. X, or X as it is at present, is not determined by the nature of things; it is not inevitable. (Hacking 1999, p. 6. Emphasis added.) [1] "

A hotly debated social construct in the present era is race, (i.e. whether common physical characteristics like skin colour, hair colour, eye shape, etc. are a legitimate way of distinguishing different groups from each other). An even better definition of race can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race.

The reason I bring up race as a controversial social construct is that the physical traits that people use to arbitrarily group each other by race is starting to fall in the light of research into human genetic heritage. In one case, someone had a genetic test to determine his genetic heritage, and the test told him, a white-skinned man, that his genetic heritage was from Africa, a land mass whose indigenous population is of black skinned people. (http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/07/11/nyt.kristof/) Additionally, genetic recombination through families having children is mixing the physical traits more and more. So the lines are starting to blur on definition of race based on physical traits alone.

While it is argued whether or not race is a social construct, it is:
1. In many cases taken for granted, and
2. It could be done away with without changing how things are (or it would improve how things are if it did not exist). The concept of race is not inevitable.
Therefore, race fits Hacking's definition of a social construct.

In the history of the Earth, differences in race have been used as the reasons for different pay scales, education, musical interests and genocide. Some examples are:

* In the early history of the country you are now located in, the inhabitants took people with black skin from another land mass and bought and sold them as property. These people were not considered to be human because their skin was a different colour. In fact these people were only counted in the official population as three-fifths of a person. While the black-skinned people were given their freedom in the mid 1800's, they have had a hard fight to this day to gain equal rights in society.

* In the early to mid 1900's this same country became involved in a war with the people of an island nation across the ocean to the west of you. The response of the country you are in was to forcibly detain in concentration camps all the people within their territory who looked like those of the island nation so that these people could not sabotage the war effort. Many of the people who were placed in the camps lost everything they had just because of their physical characteristics.

* While the country you are in had been improving in this matter in the 2000's, for the most part, in how they dealt with people within their borders, they have been backtracking as of late. Currently, they are involved in a war effort against people who traditionally come from the opposite side of the earth. Once again, anyone who looks similar to the people being fought against are detained or subjected to automatic, additional searches when they enter the country. As I was not the best student of history in 2552, I am not sure how this is going to turn out.

To demonstrate the physical characteristic differences that people of this era often use to determine race, I am enclosing the picture that hmrpita took of the crew she recruited. It shows a good range of physical traits that are used to categorise people into different races. The picture by hmrpita shows an improvement toward how people of this era are acting towards each other, as you can see that while they are of different races, they are working together as your crew.

As an analogous photo, I am including a file photo of some of the Covenant races. We know that while the Covenant work together toward our destruction, they do not treat each other equally. Grunts are perhaps the best examples of this. Because of their short, stubby stature and generally lower body strength, they are treated as lesser beings by the other Covenant races. Any elite, upon coming across a grunt, would probably instantly think of the grunt as a lesser creature soley by noticing the physical characteristics of the grunt and thinking to itself, "Ah, a lowly grunt." At the same time, we do not know if the races of the covenant share a common genetic history.

Well, Melissa, I hope this letter and the photos explain a little about the time period we have found ourselves in.

Best Regards,
