Hey rufo, any chance of passing along your recording?

I posted it as a MP3 file here - I kept the compression ratio fairly high. I have lots of web space, and can also post the original .AIFF/.WAV file if someone wants it, or any other way you like - but the MP3 was fast and small. Smile

Ariock, it's probably nothing, since I don't know how you picked out your name, and I don't know how much attention the PMs pay to our names, and I don't know if they would have had time to figure it out and let the SP VA know, but seeing as the PMs, through various interactions, and through the names they've picked for their characters, have demonstrated interest in names and their meanings, I'm going to say this and you can all smack me around if you feel it's irrelevant.

I don't know anything about the name "Ariock," but I'm assuming it's a form of Arioch since no other etymology suggests itself to me, but please correct me if I'm way off. Arioch would be pronounced similarly, only with a "ch" like the sound in chutzpah or Chanukkah -- sort of like a German "ch" or the sound in "loch" but a little more throaty. Anyway, Arioch is the name of the captain of the guard somewhere in Daniel; in Hebrew it would mean "fierce lion." It shows up again in Milton as the name of a fallen angel. But it's also the name of a king in Genesis, and the original derivation is probably Elamite: Eri-Aku which means "servant of the moon-god."

So, either derivation is rather pretty.

Of course, the actress playing the SP could have just liked the way it sounded. But, when Kali and I talked to Melissa, she knew the derivations of both our names and wasted no time in dubbing us the Goddess Squad. So, sometimes it seems as if they're familiar with your name before they talk to you.

Meow?

I will keep this short since I can see the kitten rustlers on the horizon.

The name also figures very prominently in several of the Eternal Champion serieses(a series of series?) of books by Michael Moorcock. In them, Ariock is a god of Chaos at war with the gods of Order. He is the patron of Elric and a foe of Corum. He is also an alias of one of the "Dancers at the End of Time," a group of generally amoral humans whose ancestors harnessed the fading power of the suns to become god-like as the universe is nearing its final collapse.

And it is intentionally misspelled. When you try to use a name like arioch in online gaming, since it has all of the connotations you mentioned and the fantasy/SF fiction background, it tends to have already been taken.

and finally, speaking of online gaming: Half Life 2 on November 16!!!!

geez...can I get further off topic? um...no. I don't think so.

Melissa knew that my name meant twins, but I think she must've not known right away, because near the end of the call, she asked if there were two of me there.

That actually doesn't surprise me as much. What with astrology and all, the meaning of "Gemini" is much more present in the public consciousness than the mythology behind "Phaedra" or "Arioch." Once again, it could have just been that the actress thought that "Ariock" sounded pretty, but they had a basic idea of the Phaedra mythology (maybe one of them was a classics major, or else they had someone in touch with Melissa who was googling like mad).

So, a god of chaos, eh, Ariock-with-a-k? Very interesting. Never read Moorcock; would you recommend him? (All right, keep the lasso to yourself, vpisteve, I'll get back on topic.)

First Live Convo...SP I suppose

Hi All,

So I thought I would jump in with both feet, and went to answer a phone without knowing anything about the game, and the result was a win and a live conversation.

Anderian has the pre-story to my story on his blog...

Quote:
Transcript's on my site at http://www.electricidiom.com . I'm JR jr, one of the two guys who got the last special axon for the day. Props to Chris B, the other guy. Kudos to Shad0 for the Castaway's first name.

And it was I, the confused one on the other end of his phone call.

I am not sure how much information that I remember as a lot of it did not make sense at the time, and of course I did not have any sort of recording, and could barely hear as well...most of the transcript would be me going "sorry?, huh? what?, can you say it again?"

But the essence of my conversation was basically that she asked me a question, and thanks to Anderian, I had the answer. She was super excited that we won, and that she was going to leave me a present (I found out later it was the new soundbite).

She got sad and told me about her brother Kamal, and something about him being trapped or lost or something, and then said two words that I could not understand, but that they sound like "train" backwards. She asked me to send more pictures of things like balloons and cake and Ice Cream, at which point I asked, what kind of Ice cream? Vanilla she said, and we agreed that we both like Vanilla, but she prefers hers with a LOT of sprinkles.

She asked for my number, but I was not sure what number she meant, and I didn't want to potentially screw anything up, so I just said that I didn't have it.

She interrupted the conversation really quickly as if she was in danger and said that she had to go and hung up very quickly, and that was it....

Anyway, if I think of any other part that I should post, I will edit this message.

Thank you all for a fun introduction to ILB!

-Chris

Hmm... here's some speculation for you:

Since we're all adding huge amounts of cell phone numbers to Melissa's "files", does anyone think perhaps that on Nov. 9 or perhaps some date before then EVERYONE will get a call at the same time maybe? It's just a thought, but the idea that my group alone contributed 4 numbers as well as many other groups makes me curious that something big might happen.

Only time will tell I guess.
