okay, does anyone have a pic of said note? the gis, it does nothing. and i take it the note doesnt usually have london written on it? if not, then its in the same color and script as the sente sig, and theres somethign else written right by it that we can only see part of.

If you go to http://www.bankofengland.co.uk theres a section called "Know Your Notes", its a .pdf file bout 9.8 Mb, but its got a good picture of most of the bank notes used in England.

all bank of england notes have london on them

true, but £50 notes are rare. It's not asthough whoever took that photograph of "london" just reached in his/her back pocket and pulled it out, they would have had to go out of their way to get hold of it.

£50 notes are not really rare though - just that we mere mortals don't see many of them (yeah, I know - doesn't that make them rare?). They just happen to be something that attracts attention if you try and spend it. Like trying to spend a Scottish tenner in the depths of Cornwall in the 70s.

Unless the 959 is significant, I think it's pointing us to London and presumably the City of London in particular. But as for why ... Confused

If there is anything that strikes me as sadder than a "know your notes" website, I can't think what it is. Surprised
I'm amazed it even exists.

I think it's up there so that people can check to see if they've got a forgery or not and to help train staff who have to handle notes to spot the dodgy ones or any that have gone out of circulation.

To clarify what other people have said; £50 notes are freely available but they're such a large denomination (approx $80 US of the top of my head) that people hardly use them (preferring to use a cheque or card for security reasons). Because they're not commonly used, people are unfamiliar with them so forgeries could get passed more easily. So for the above two reasons people tend to be wary of them (shopkeepers don't like accepting them for example).

Now, any bank should be able to give you £50 out of your account in a single note if you asked them to but usually they give it in 20s and tens simply because that's what most people want. So until inflation devalues the note significantly it's simply gonna not be something many people see day-to-day.

Of course, if you were a PM with a bunch of venture capital in your hands then you'd probably have loads of these kicking around to light your Cuban cigars Wink

...Or, it's also there for foreigners who've never seen a poundnote in their lives, and are suddenly going to have to deal with them, due to a London vacation, ARG, etc..

That's because they're so insubstantial. Hardly any security features and the paper they're on tears so easily Very Happy *ducks*
