Pattern Recognition Okay, we all know that the Post-It note refers to the William Gibson book Pattern Recognition.
I read the Amazon site and maybe I am clutching at straws here but I figure the game designers wouldn't have just picked out that book at random.
So what does Amazon say about the book.
Amazon Synopsis wrote:
Cayce Pollard owes her living to her pathological sensitivity to logos. In London to consult for the world's coolest ad agency, she finds herself catapulted, via her addiction to a mysterious body of fragmentary film footage uploaded to the Web by a shadowy auteur, into a global quest for this unknown 'garage Kubrick'. Cayce becomes involved with an eccentric hacker, a vengeful ad executive, a defrocked mathematician, a Tokyo Otaku-coven known as Mystic and, eventually, the elusive footage maker. In his first contemporary novel, one of the most influential writers of the past twenty years turns his attention to London, New York, the former USSR, and the ubiquity of modern branding - with dazzling results.
Has anyone read this book? "Fragmentary film footage uploaded to the Web by a shadowy auteur" sounds interesting... that was something I was looking at doing myself to promote my own films... Mmmmm
Also, there is a reference in the Amazon review to flying:
Amazon Review wrote:
She can just about bear to fly BA, but not cross-promoted Virgin...
Could that have something to do with the airline tag?

Got the book and read it, lent it to a friend to read.
It is a VERY good book. It has the sensibility of Neuromancer and the other Sprawl books, but is set in the present time with present technology.
Cayce is what is described as a "coolhunter", one who spots the latest trends, what is the next hot thing. (I didnt know it before then, but a friend informed me that there are such people right now).
he latest buzz involves mystery videos being uploaded to the net, and she is commisioned to search for the maker and what they mean. Each video is a fragment, and quite haunting, but so artfully made that for the people in them, one cannot tell what time period they came from.
This sort of reminds me of the search for the box maker in either Count Zero or Mona Lisa Overdrive, I think it was CZ (its been years since I read those!).
And no, I wont spoil the answer there. But its worth the trip. This is one book worth reading.

Welcome in! I'll have to get my friedn to send me back Pattern Recognition. I had gotten the trade paperback, so I'm not sure how page numbers will work with that one. Perhaps the PMs if they are using clues based on page numbers, make sure of which type of book and reprint if any they are referring to?
read All Tomorrow's Parties. It didnt do much to me, I ranked it with New Rose Hotel.
Pattern Recognition blew me away as equally as Neuromancer. Between the twqo books, I prefer Neuromancer better, but Pattern Recogmnition is still pretty darned strong.

Page 60 - Pattern Recognition Hardcover Edition Hi all,
I am new to ARG but not to puzzles, so I am hoping that I can be of some assistance. A friend told me about ILoveBees and that led me here, where I eagerly await Project Syzygy and Orbital Colony. I am also enjoying lurking in the Timewasting section.
Interestingly enough, another friend recommended the work of Gibson to me not 2 weeks before I was introduced to ARG.
I have attached page 60 (which Randomeis requested) from the Hardcover edition of Pattern Recognition, which I am currently reading. Please note that the ISBN on this one is not the one on the Project Syzygy site so I am not sure if it will be useful or not. I can certainly see the relevance of the book though.
Why page 60, anyway? Forgive me if I missed something - I tried to read all the relevant sections of the forum before positng to avoid asking stupid questions, but if there was something specific about page 60 I must have missed it.
Anyway, I look forward to helping solve these puzzles in any way that I can.

Hi there,
Regarding the book editions people are discussing, I think I can clear a few things up, as I happen to be in the used/rare book trade. The given ISBN of 0670875597 refers to the U.K. First Edition of the book. The uncorrected proof could be exactly the same as that edition, or entirely different, depending on how many mistakes were found. That is why it has the little disclaimer about not quoting anything before checking it against the final product. That is, of course, assuming that someone on the proof it lists the above ISBN number as the one for the finished book. If it lists anything else, all bets are off.
As to why the proof is being sold, it is actually a very common practice. Collectors often look for them, either as way to read the book before it is officially published, or as a "True" first printing of a book. Otherwise, many people sell them as a cheap alternative to a normal hardcover.
Also, the other ISBN mentioned earlier, 0-399-14986-4, refers to the first American edition, which likely has numerous changes from the first U.K., in terms of formatting and jacket art, if nothing else.
Hope this helps.
Scott
-edited to add-
P.S. For those who end up looking for used copies of this or anything online, Uncorrected Proofs are also refered to as Advanced Reading Copies, or ARC
