NOTE: I'm spoiler-free thus far.
I'm going out on a limb and saying that there'll probably be an Elite rebellion of some kind in Halo 2. The Brute in the picture is probably either hunting down rebellious Elites or is the Brute Tartarus from First Strike who was sent to eliminate certain Covenant leaders associated with the finding of the shards of the destiny crystal.
The Prophet in the commercial looks to be the High Prophet of Truth also mentioned in First Strike due to the echoing of his speech off the walls of his chamber. It was written that the walls of the chamber that line his throne were built of the glass of all the conquered worlds the Covenant had destroyed.

Damnit if that doesn't sound like Hurt, though.
I must know. If it isn't, damn fine job on the casting.
Not many people get to play floating space-popes, besides Frank Oz (kidding), so it may very well be Hurt. I'd TOTALLY dig that.
To archon:
I've been speculating a similar theory for quite some time. Add to that the Prophet's utterly uncontested power and you have the perfect makings of a military uprising.

I said this in IRC last night, but I keep thinking these are Mudokon spirits guiding Abe, telling him to collect spooce shrubs and save all his gangly friends in Oddworld.

The Brute is swinging at an Elite with no helmet on.
Elites are 8 feet tall, remember.
Most of them also have brown faces.

And I don't think the voice is actually an AI... but an old, female friend of the Master Chief's who is very closely related to Cortana.
In a manner of speaking.
That would be awesome, granted we ever see her again. Bungie wouldn't leave such a huge story thread untied. *crosses fingers*

Friend is an odd word for someone who kidnaps you as a child and performs scientific experiments on you in order to make you a super soldier. I'd call that person, mother. She was the closest thing John and the other Spartans had to a mother.
My money is on Jen Taylor as the voice actor for a lot of what we've been hearing. She is very very good at what she does.

Yeah, that sounds about right. In John's eyes, what she did gave him a purpose, so mother is a much better word.

not that anything on the internet should be held as be all end all truth, but i just pulled this up
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1071768/
she's listed as the voice for cortana in halo 2 and that's it, so don't get your hopes up too high for durga in game.
Now if i can only convince her to do voice clips for my computer...

That page lists all of 4 characters for Halo 2, all four of which are returning parts from Halo.
IMDB is filled in by users and Bungie has kept the lid on tight enough that the only characters listed are the known returners.
So the IMDB page really tells us nothing, one way or the other.

Agreed, IMDB, while a good resources, is usually not up to date with information until all info has been made public knowledge...and if Bungie doesn't have it posted, then no one will.

Sorry to disappoint, but Frank O'Connor wrote in the August 27 Bungie Weekly Update:
Quote:
The voice stuff in the cinematics is astonishing. We've picked some brilliant voices for the game. My favorite voice sounds like (but isn't) John Hurt (we should ask Joe about this) and the sheer variety of voices is outstanding.
So it ain't him. The good news, however, is that you and he (and I) share the same taste in voice actors.
-- Steve's stuck for a tagline... and stuck home croaking like a frog and vainly trying to clear sinus passages. Sigh.

Yeah, I'm definitely feeling the uprising thing going on. That bodes well for Earth - we get some covie on covie combat! And what really makes me happy is that if we get to see this covenant civil dispute, perhaps we will be able to take part in it, as one of the elite's we can be in multi. Sweeeeet.

The thing that the MC 'rides' out of the back of the ship - the thing that is vaguely tire shaped with needles all over it - could that be the artifact?

That looked more like a Covenant Engineer.
But this line gave me goosebumps:
"For those who said this day would never come... what are they to say now"
It sounded like the prophet proclaiming that his own prophecy has come to pass.
