[SPEC] Pondering Dana's 10-22 Blog

To start, I thought I'd put this here, rather than letting it be lost amongst the for/against helping dana stuff. I started thinking about this after reading this and this

And so I begin with --
Ranger D (in a different thread) wrote:
I assume she is referring to this myth:

I guess Dana's behavior is to be expected. I mean, if you were in her shoes would you do the same thing?

Any suggestions? I am all SPEC'd out for the time being.

Before we get bogged down in the arguments for/against our person/AI of choice, we should think in a rather [META] sort of way, about what exactly Dana's blog entry meant. I would wager a rather healthy sum that it is not all that it appears to be.

On the surface, the entry is a plea for help. "Please don't let this crazy thing kill my aunt, help me kill this other thing." She could have just let it go with that. However, she includes the parable of the Old man, his pets, and the thief.

We seem to have four characters in the parable - The Old Man, His Cat, His Dog, and the theif. And we have four "characters" in our dillemma - Dana, "The Players" (us), The Princess, and Melissa. (These are not in any order - Melissa may not be the thief, etc.)

On the surface, my first thought is to equate Melissa as the old man, the SP as the thief, and Dana and Ourselves as the Cat and the Dog. In that sense, the parable seems to indicate that while we will get Melissa just what she wants (and destroy the theif in the process) like the Cat and the Dog, the players (or at least a portion of us) will have a perpetual dislike for the Dana.

Another point of view would be that Melissa is the cat, and the Princess is the dog. Ignoring, for the moment, who the Old Man and the Theif might be, we see that (with some supposition) both SP and Melissa are working towards a common goal - Defense of earth/humanity - however, they use vastly different means. Melissa is like the cat in some respects - hiding some of the "critical" transmissions sounds similar to eating the meals indoors, and then throwing the scraps for all to see. The SP is like the dog, making sure that all of the information is shared with all. Yet they are bitter enemies now.

Of course, as is the nature of all parables, you can reverse the argument and it works just as well -- The princess with her sneaking, and hiding, and transmitting could just as well be considered the cat.

With all that being said, my question is - Can we change the outcome of the parable? Can we somehow arrange things so that SP and Melissa will play nice with each other and both return home as friends? Or are we forced to make the choice of "who sticks around, and who doesn't".

Of course, the Zen master asks "What is the nature of the story I have told?"

I kinda figured Dana was the dog and we were the cat. It was us that got her into her current mess, anyway. Beekeepers turned over Dana's position, beekeepers suggested this course of action to melissa, and now, we've got beekeepers angry at Dana for doing the only thing she could in the sitiuation we put her into.

Thieves and dogs and cats, oh my!

Hmm -- if I could offer an alternate interpretation:

I'd equate Dana with the Old Man. I know she says she feels like the dog, but are we sure we're supposed to take her literally? She knows Melissa is monitoring her, so casting herself as the Old Man and Melissa as the Thief probably isn't a good idea, but her site and more or less her everyday life has been stolen from her by Melissa. From her perspective, she is the one that has originally -- and continually -- been harmed.

That leaves us, the players -- Dana's support group, Melissa's crew, the SP's friends -- as the dog and the cat. I think she's saying that there's going to be a division among us, just as the SP and Melissa were urging us to pick sides last week. Some of us are going to betray others (well, that's actually already happened).

Again, I don't believe that we have to choose sides, but Dana apparently believes we do.

EDIT: Moved -- didn't mean to start a new thread!

That's a good point Phaedra,

I hadn't thought of it that way, but it does make sense. Hopefully, we will be able to help Dana without ending up as enemies with ourselves. Hm. If that made sense Smile

In related news, it seems like something creeeeepy is going on with hives.html and contactme.html (it's already being discussed. So it seems that things are moving forward in an unknown way.

I'm rather suspicious of the text that the Princess posted, however, as it seems to me that she could be falling for Melissa's trap. Hmmmm. I must find wav transcripts, so I can hear what is progressing!

Re-reading Hives and Contactme and with all the events being unlocked today...

(prepares for severe trouting)

"My crew may be required to complete the mission in my absence."
= Complete Halo 2. 'Halo 2' being the mission.

"The larger my crew becomes, the more effective it becomes.
The more communications are strengthened between members of my crew, the more effective my crew becomes."
= Online Multiplayer Clans.

(ok Out of Game bit) .. this has me worried, it gives me only 10 days to finish GTA San Andreas before Halo2 hits!

/platform independant gamer Smile
