Just gotta iron out a few details but I'm so psyched about this.

Does anyone know anything about the amtrak trains to NYC? how late are they usually? Cause the only ones we can take get us to manhattan with just an hour to spare before admission time.

You should be fine if you get on the Amtrak.

d.mauro, I'm planning on driving to NYC - but I know that the last thing I want to do is drive IN NYC (I've flown there several times, and I know I would really rather avoid driving in downtown Manhattan). Where would be the best place to park outside the city and then ride a bus/train/whatever in? I'll be coming from Upstate, so I'm thinking to the north or west of NYC. Any advice would be most welcome. Smile

Thanks for the tip, much appreciated.

Our next step is sleeping accomodations. I thought I'd be able to stay at a friend's apartment but that is now partially falling through. Can anyone recommend a relatively cheap hotel or hostel within walking distance of the event?

Or better yet, anyone have a hotel reservation 2 of us can join you at (and of course pay our share)?

I've never actually parked outside the city and taken mass transit in, but this seems like a good place to start: http://mta.info/mnr/html/mnrmap.htm . That's a map to the MTA trains that go up north. It looks like you could take one them to their terminal points at Grand Central Station (this is only about 10 blocks away, or you could take the 6 train [green line] DOWNtown one stop to 33rd street) or Penn Station (from here to 2nd and 30th is a little trickier; you would probably want to take the A, C, or E [blue line] DOWNtown 2 stops to 14th St/8th Ave, transfer to the Brooklyn Bound L [grey line] train and go 3 stops to 14th Street Union Square, transfer to the 6 train [green line] and head UPtown 2 or 3 stops to 28th or 33rd street). Those directions are probably very confusing if you've never used the subway, but they are accurate and will make more sense if you look at the map so you can see what I mean visually.

Depending on what time you get into the city (4-6 is rush "hour," and even then traffic gets hectic an hour each side of that), driving might not be that bad. You will save on whatever price they charge you to park your car at the train station outside the city (although you will have to pay for tolls if you drive in) and it will be quicker and easier. I was very nervous about my first time driving in the city, but it turned out not to be so bad. It might be a bit scary if you don't know where you're going, but it's a small city so it's easy to eventualy find where you need to go. Or you can always pull up beside a taxi driver, roll down your window and ask for directions at a red light.

Actually getting INto the city with your car shouldn't be bad because it's towards the end of the week, so anyone coming in our out of the city is probably heading OUT of the city. So you'll probably be heading the opposite way of most of the traffic. Of course then there're unavoidable accidents and whatnot to cause delays so I think driving or the train are both very viable options. However, I completely understand your reservations about driving in the city, and if you are too worried about it, take the train in.

Oh, and if you drive you get to see the city, although you might be too panicked about finding 2nd avenue and not getting lost to enjoy the sights Wink

I hope that helps.

If you look at my last post, there are subway directions to get from Penn Station to 2nd Ave and 30th Street, if you don't want to take a Taxi.

I've never had a problem with Amtrak being very late. Their trains are comfortable, punctual, and take you very near where you want to go. It's probably the best bet for anyone commuting in, but is close enough that they don't need to fly. Tickets are a bit expensive however, and for me to trake a train just to Buffalo is about the price of flying with Jet Blue, and it doesn't get much cheaper as you get closer to the city.

yeah unfortunately Pittsburgh doesn't have Jet Blue or any discount carrier that would work for this trip. I'm from Rochester originally so I really miss having them around. Despite taking about twice as long, Amtrak is cheaper than flying so its probably what we'll stick with.

Thanks for the subway pointers too.

I'm so anxious to go to the training. Very Happy

The only really bad part about it is I 'm gonna be cutting it close on getting there on time. I have work, and I'll be comming from Jersey. I should hopfully be able to sneak out of work early and get there with plenty of time...but thats not guaranteed. I'll have to whip up an ilovebees.com t-shirt for this occasion.

Hope to see you all there!

For anyone looking to drive into the city and park near the CE location, the rates for the evening aren't too bad. IconParking has a search page where you can specify the location (Kip's Bay), time in, time out, and it'll show you a list of parking garages and what you can expect to pay. For 6pm-2am, I found as cheap as $6 for the evening, but I'd expect to pay more like $15-$20.

Dude thanks! I now have a place to park right near the place. Provided they don't fill up by the time I get there.

So if this turns out to be a party type event and it's Halo 2 playing and meeting Jersey, Derga, and all.. Can someone take pictures and post em? I'm curious to see what they all look like and the fun I'm missing out on because none of those Coor. are near me.

I'll definitely be bringing my camera and posting stuff online. Assuming they let me take pics.

I think it's very cool that they realize many of us will be going great distances to make it to these training exercises...

That said, with any luck I'll see everyone in NYC! Very Happy

Is anyone up for meeting earlier than the specified 7:45pm EST?

I'm hoping to get up there by 5 or 6.

Perhaps we could set up a recon mission and assess the threat level before proceeding? (hehe, I love sounding like I know what I'm talking about and really I'm just a big dork, but a dork with a rank).

It's not about making fake ID to get in. We're old enough. It's about doing something cool for the event.

I'm not saying that making a badge is a bad idea or have anything to do with your age. I was just issuing words of caution to those under 17.

With that said, I'd love to have a Mechanical and Engineering badge.

Team Chowda is probably going to leave from Boston around 1:30pm... without rush hour traffic, that would put us in at around 5:30. With traffic, I'm expecting 6:30-7pm. But, we can certainly meet up outside.
