Are you coming up for this, Shad0? ???

Sigh.

The odds of my being able to attend are miniscule indeed. I sent Melissa an RSVP anyway -- because I can't think of anything that would make me feel worse than making it up there and then not being able to get in -- but it's looking increasingly unlikely as my attempts to get various things covered/rescheduled remain unsuccessful.

Waaah.

(So if I do make it up, who can give me a 30-second crash course in "How Not to Look Like a Complete Idiot If You've Not Only Never Played Halo Before, But Never Even Used an Xbox Before"?)

That's odd, Shad0...

My bf and roomie both sent a RSVP and both got confirmations. My bf sent his on Wed afternoon and got a responce after 9:50 pm pst that night. And my roomie sent one off around 5~ish yesterday and received a confirmation between 9-10pm pst last night.

I don't see how you're not getting a responce. Did you put the right thing in the header? Email blocker on?

Crash coarse: controls, on the controller there are six buttons on the right side. A yellow one (Y), a blue one (X), a green one (A), a red one (B), and a black and white one (besides Back and Start on the left side). There are also two analog sticks, kind of like joy sticks on the remote, one on the right and one on the left. Lastly there are two triggers on it, one on the left and one on the right. You melee (hit the bad person) with your gun with B, you switch you weapons with Y, you reload with X, you jump with A, you crouch with the left analog stick (push it down and hold it. You move around with he left and right analogue sticks, the left one makes you move forward, back, strait left, and strait right. The other analog stick, if pushed down makes you zoom in with a weapon that can zoom, is used for looking right, left, up, and down. You can choose to invert the axis so when you move the left analog stick down you look up or you can just leave it default so when you move the stick down you look down and when you push up you look up. You can also adjust the sensitivity (as in how fast you look left, right, up, and down. You can hold two weapons at a time, unless you're dual wielding. You pick up a weapon by using the X button, if you want to drop the weapon that you currently have stand over the desired weapon and hold X until you drop your current one and pick up the new weapon. If you want to dual wield a weapon just get one that can be dual wielded, Sub Machine Gun, Plasma Pistol, Plasma Rifle, Needlers, Human Pistol (aka the Magnum) and some others that I'm forgetting and one that hasn't been reveled yet, stand over another that can also be dual wielded and hold Y until you pick it up. Now if you dual wield there's a few things you need to know, you cant through grenades because they use the left trigger to be thrown and if you have a gun in that had it uses that trigger to fire that weapon. Also if you're dual wielding and you melee someone you drop the gun in your left had and hit them with the gun in your right. When you have your left had free you can through grenades. There are two types, Plasma and Fragmentation. The Plasmas can be stuck to an opponent and will explode after four seconds, killing that person. The frags will explode and do damage but will not kill an opponent alone. The white button switches between grenades and the black one activates your night vision if you have the sniper rifle or is you don't it just turns on the helmet light. That's my long ass tutorial on how to play halo, oh yeah always aim for the head. There are vehicles in there but you wont live long enough to enjoy them much. Laughing Plus that would take another paragraph to talk about. If you must know I will post about them or just to to http://www.bungie.net and look at the Halo and Halo 2 stuff there.

Lastly, I'm about 90% sure I wont be going to the "Combat Training" but, if I find some way, any way, I will be there.

30 second primer: (Some multiplayer Halo2 spoilers)

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

  1. The Enemy's Gate Is Down. Laughing
  2. Halo2 has team flags over all of your buddies that shows their status. So even when you cannot seem them on Line of Sight (LOS) you can still see their position and status. If they get shot their flag will flash red, if they die, it flashes as a red X.
  3. There are icons that may/may not show up in the flags to help you identify your teammates from a distance. [not sure]
  4. If you Dual-Wield, you cannot throw grenades.
  5. If you Dual-Wield, you will drop a weapon when you Melee
  6. Not all weapons Dual-Wield, only weapons that require a single hand.
  7. There is a lunge-attack with the Plasma Sword. This can even be used when you attack someone on the level above you! Twisted Evil (Not through walls, but you can lunge directly up while they are leaping over you and you have a good chance of pwning them)
  8. Standard (Human) Grenades bounce and rarely kill your target. If your target isn't sitting on top of the grenade, the shields will usually protect them from death.
  9. Plasma (Covenant) Grenades do not bounce. If they hit a wall, they drop to the floor from that point. They are also stickeh. If you can stick your plasma grenade to another player, it will kill them when it explodes.
  10. Except the Needler, Covenant weapons did not need a reload in Halo. Once their charge was gone, you replaced the weapon with another. All Covenant weapons had a "heat/rad counter" that when you spiked it, the weapon overheated and would be unusable for 4 seconds. Human weapons all needed periodic reloading.
  11. In Halo, the pistol was king because it was good in close and had a micro-zoom ability that was good at distance for sniping. This has been removed from Halo 2.
  12. Some weapons have a special ability (like the Sniper can zoom). In Halo, this was done by pressing down on the right thumstick (the stick you use to look around).
  13. In Halo, the sniper rifle has low-light vision which you can activate, only while zoomed by pressing the flashlight button.
  14. If your shields get hit, hide for a bit and let them recharge. But remember, your enemies shields will recharge also, so hiding isn't always the best thing to do. If you can coordinate 1-2 style with a teammate, you hit the enemy till your shields are down, then your teammate finishes them off, then you've achieved something.
  15. Game types: Slayer - get kills, CTF - Capture the Enemy's Flag, Invasion - Take your flag to the enemy's base, King of the Hill - Stand in a marked spot for a certain amount of time to win, your time doesn't reset if you die or leave the "hill". But you only accumulate time when you are standing on the "hill," Oddball - Carry around a skull that prevents you from using your weapons for a set amount of time. Time accumulation works the same as the "Hill," Rally - Collect flags that randomly appear around the map to win, Race - Collect flags in a set order to make "laps," after so many laps, you win, Juggernaught - Kill someone to become "it," accumulate time (or kills) as "it" to win the game. Juggernaught can also be given boosted damage dealing, more health, more speed and/or invisibility.
  16. There will be more game types available in Halo 2 than those listed above.

Also, I [SPEC] that the event will be held in the private room of "Portal 1" a arcade in the Metreon. They have an area that is curtained off in the back that has some open space.

I'm trying to find out if they have anything on their schedule for Nov 4 at 6 PM. (i.e., "Hi, I'd like to make a reservation. Could I reserve Nov 4 at 6 pm for a party?")

Woohoo! That just made my day, Mazian. You're on the bounce, my friend. Sorry to hear you can't make it, but we'll speak you're name at the ARGfest afterward, so you'll be there in spirit.

Whoops. My bad. It's not that Melissa didn't respond -- she did -- it's that Real Life(tm) is interfering with my ability to be several hours away on Thursday evening. Sad I haven't given up yet, however.

Incidentally, did anyone receive e-mail from Dana on Saturday?

I immediately like you. If there is some kind of large multiplayer team game going on, there needs to be a self proclaimed "Dragon" team. Very Happy

I suppose I should introduce myself. Hi all!
I've kinda been lurking since this game started but never really weighed in till now.

Yes, the maps do seem to indicate that the training exercise will take place in the Metrion. I imagine that we'll have lots of people there early who won't mind pointing fellow beekeepers in the right direction. I myself plan on leaving from alameda around 3. (I end up late to a lot of things, not this! no sir!) I also imagine there will be signs. Anyway, I'll do some advance scouting while I'm up there, and should I run into anyone with a GPS finder, I'll point them in the right direction.

I doubt she would, but I DO hope Dana shows up. That would be awesome.

Sorry, but:

standing at the Palo Alto train station, waiting in between ringing axons, I think I figured out the CalTrain schedule. Looks like Leftbrained and I will be riding up on the train which arrives at the King Street end around 4:03pm; from there we'll probably just walk up to the Metreon. If anyone else is doing the same, we can sit together. Altho' I do like the "good karma" feeling of boarding from Palo Alto, we'll probably use the Sunnyvale station to begin our journey. (My stomach is already doing flip-flops of anticipation just writing about it!)

p.s., this mode of transportation will limit the amount of after-hours partying we can do, but i'm sure it'll all be good.
