Dude! I live like forty minutes from San Francisco, but I have no car. This kept me from answering any axons, (before the voicemail), but there is no WAY I'm gonna miss this! Hell, I'll walk if I have to.

Visiting San Francisco

I thought it would be helpful to those out-of-towners who are going to make the trip that they get a few links that Native Franciscans ( Razz ) take for granted.

First let me say, do not use the San Jose Airport. It's too problematic. Cab fares can exceed $100.00 from this airport to downtown SF and $60 from this airport to the nearest BART station. I have no experience with CalTrain, this may be a viable method of reducing the expenses if you have already booked a plane to here.

If you are coming in to either SFO (San Francisco International Airport) or OAK (Oakland International Airport), then you have the option to use BART transit.

www.bart.gov - find schdules and prices

If you are coming from SFO, you are coming from the San Francisco International stop. If you are coming from OAK then you are coming from the Colesium/Oakland Airport stop.

The Live Combat Training Exercise is nearest the Powell St exit.

To/From SFO, the cost is $4.95 each way.

To/From OAK, the cost is $2.00 for the "AirBart" shuttle from the Airport to the BART station. Then $3.15 from Colesium/Oakland Airport to Powell St. The cost is exactly the same going back.

Wholefoods (www.wholefoods.com) has a store at this location. The food is reasonably priced, is nearby, and is healthy.

There are numerous other fast food restaurants in the area for those who want cheaper food.

I'll put up an offer. Anyone who needs a ride from the event to the airport or home, as long as it's within a reasonable drive (i.e., less than 60 miles, which should cover most of the bay area). I cannot pick anyone up, I will be working that day.

And you must work out arrangements in advance so that I can have driving directions/etc prepared. Please also keep in mind that if you make arrangements with me, I might be filling the other seats in my car, so you need to be specific about how many people will be travelling. Unexpected extras may find themselves without a ride if I have no space for them.

If no one needs a ride, then I won't be bringing my car (again, a reason place an advanced reservation with the Mazian Taxi Servier Razz ), cause parking is a whopping $25-35 dollars in some places in downtown San Francisco.

PM me and we'll work out details.

I will also extend the invitation to anyone who needs help navigating SF, PM me and I'll do my best to point you in the right direction.

How could i NOT attend? Very Happy Just a question of how best to get there from the South Bay: should I drive to somewhere that I could get on BART and be closer to the Metreon, or should I drive to a Caltrain station and walk up from the King Street stop? How could I NOT think about starting from my beloved Caltrain station in Palo Alto where I attended my first (and last?) axon ringing?

Caltrain would work well and be good karma. Smile You can walk from there, like you said, or you can hop on the N Judah streetcar from the Caltrain station and go to Montgomery Street (west end of station) or Powell Street (east end of station). They are about the same distance from 4th and Mission.
The streetcar costs $1.25. http://www.sfmuni.com
It probably takes longer than walking, but ultimately it would be less walking, so it just depends on what you prefer.

Pineapple,

Check here for full instructions.

Essentially, you have to be:
  • A crewmember
  • over 17
  • one of the first hundred or so to sign up

From your post it sounds like you might be missing a couple of the requirements....

Shoot. I missed the end of the axon hunting. I sent an email to Dana's account, but it sounds like I may have missed the period where tests of loyalty were offered. If not on the crew list, will the email even mean anything to Melissa?

There is also a huge parking structure across from the Metreon and Moscone Center at 4th and Mission. I've parked there many times for Macword Expos. Smile

From five seconds of lazy internet investigation: The Metreon is owned by Sony, which makes it seem like the last place on earth that would ever host an XBOX event. But there's also a Loews movie theater there, and that was the chain that aired the Halo 2/ILB rabbithole trailer in the first place, right?

Plus it would make sense to be in a movie theater, so we could have the live hookup to the other three cities on the movie screen at the same time. Damn.

Just to satisfy my own curiousity, can anyone tell me which of these SF Train stations should I pick as a destination?

Edit: Bah, only overnight trains anyway.

Obligatory fish joke, but, seriously, do you have to be a crew member to gain entry to the event? If you're not pre-registered, I understand you can just show up, but if you do pre-register and you're not a confirmed crew member from any other exercise, what the hell happens?

Presumably, you have to be a "crew member" (definition open to debate) to "pre-register." However, you do not have to "pre-register" to play. When you "pre-register" you get "priority access." Which, presumably means that they fill the first X many seats with those who register via the ILB game, and then the remaining seats after the event starts (or after the priority window ends) are open to the public.

Of course, some still think that maybe this is going to be non-interactive (i.e., not a multiplayer deathmatch). I personally am SPEC'ing that it will be. If you go to this thread you will find links to promotionals to play Halo 2 multiplayer live on November 4th, in NYC.

I'm betting that this is not the only "open to the public" Halo 2 promotional event they are running that day, it's just the only one we've heard about so far.

I was gonna go until I saw the airfares. Give us 2-weeks' notice next time, PMs!

/me shakes his fist at nobody in particular, since they're not here and never read the forums.

I vaguely remembered registering for the Cold Pizza promotion way back when. Since that's at 7 AM, probably for the live show, I'm thinking it's not got much if anything to do with us.

Maybe I'm not looking in the right places, but I'm surprised I haven't heard anything about the SF training exercise anywhere other than the 404 page. Like, I was expecting Penny-Arcade or local Bay Area media or, you know, a huge thread at the Bungie forums about all this. A game that pre-sells 15 million copies has got to have some pretty rabid fans, even ones who aren't ILB crew...
