I will be following the "extreme-cheepskate" model with what money has been donated to me in getting to and from the event. I will use whatever is left over to purchase and send anything possible to other deserving beekeepers.

Yes, please do not rip off the nice people who made all this possible. That would be in extremely bad taste. Perhaps they would give people extras to distribute if we had some sort of password...

sounds awesome to me... now i don't have to beg anyone to send me stuff (i always feel bad about that)...

beekeepers rock!

(for myself... i'd offer up more, but i just recently ran into a HUGE financial obligation so that's where my fun-time money's going)

If you can pay for your own postage, that will make it that much easier for a donor.

to save some from Phaedra's lecture, i'm willing to pay for postage if that's going to be an issue for some people... (:

Noble soul. If there are more like you, it may still be averted. Smile

It will be sappy. It will be long. It will include anecdotes. They will be cloying.

Save yourselves, and pass the collection plate.

Seriously, it doesn't cost *that* much to mail a small item, and that's all I'm asking anyone to do. Some of the recipients may even be willing to chip in for postage.

just a minute

I think the idea of the lottery is fine, but I would like to add that it is purely voluntary. I do not think any player--no matter how long they have played or how much they have contributed-- should feel pressured to contribute. I personally dislike being threatened with sermons about charity or anything else. Especially in screaming red letters.

I am going to the New York training session. I prefer to make my own decisions about the people I choose to send any swag I might get (which at this moment is purely hypothetical.)

And, even if one assumes lecturing other players is appropriate in these forums, I don't think that my choice not to participate in your arrangement should make me a target of some unwarranted tirade.

Part of a PM I sent to Pheadra:
Quote:
I would willingly kick in $20-40, depending on what is picked up for me and the cost of it, plus postage to send it to me just so I can get something. If I could be included in the lottery as well as have some wonderful benefactor pick up the $20-40 worth of goodies I would appreciate that

For whomever takes up the position of benefactor for me, I would love to get hold of a book or something like it if they have it there ( as was mentioned in an earlier post.

Ah.... memorabilia..... stories for the grandkids about the running around searching for payphones, constant cell calls and the frantic searching for the right phrase and person to relay it too..... I can see them now, sitting at me feet in awe....

Ok, wishful thinking - so they'll just sit there and go "Yeah, grandpa lost his mind years ago and now just rambles. Mumbles constantly - something about bees I think...."

As I said to Phaedra in PM, I get paid tomorrow; so if there's a "swag postage fund," I'll be happy to contribute $20-30 to it this weekend. Just let me know who to Paypal it to.

Re: just a minute

EDIT: This is not intended to be flame. See? Pink!

It was brought to my attention that the following can be read as a flaming. While I admit to a moment's irritation that my motives in what I intended as a tongue-in-cheek exhortation were automatically assumed to be...less than friendly...I am honestly trying to explain my intentions, since motives are not always as clear in writing, and I am genuinely sorry if anyone felt pressured to do anything that they weren't already willing to do.

The part about the upcoming sermon, rose, was mostly intended to be humorous, and now that I *have* actually gotten some volunteers for donors, I will take it down. For quite a while my inbox was being flooded with people who wanted to be recipients but NO ONE who was willing to donate, despite the fact that it can be essentially free for those who can't afford to pay postage.

And no matter what I say, I fail to see how I could make it involuntary. There is nothing I can do to make you participate. That remains your choice.

The "screaming red letters" were intended to highlight the important parts for those who didn't want to read the entire post. Would it have been better if they were blue? There. I've made them blue.

I'm sorry if you found the method offensive. I'm sorry if you felt pressured. I thought it would be understood that this was in fun.

Again, that remains your choice. I understand that some people have already made private arrangements, and that some people will prefer not to participate. That's fine. But for those who might be willing, but just hadn't gotten around to it, I wanted to get their attention so that we are able to actually do this, and so that if we didn't get enough volunteers, we could still cancel it before actual arrangments were made.

<sigh> Yes, rose. Next time I will put in more smiley faces so that every one knows the sermon part is tongue-in-cheek.

Ah - FREEDOM OF CHOICE!

The great thing about forums is that you can read everything in them - and choose to apply or accept what you will - and the rest you can deem as trout.

Free will is a lovely thing isn't it?

And for those of who that do not contribute I will be sending the Brain Ninjas your info.... Twisted Evil

Dang shoulda made that in blue with a smily face and not the evil one huh? Darn.....

Ok... no more silliness... back to the topic at hand... airspeed of unladen swallows - but wait!!! The euorpean or african ones? Arrgh decisions

Before anyone else does - I trout myself for extreme silliness and utter frivality Trout Raspberry

I'll gladly pay for postage if someone gets me something, or maybe up to $5 for small swag. But more than that is a little out of the question, as I've got to ask my landlord for an extension on rent this month (thank goodness he's my dad, otherwise I'd be screwed). College sucks.
