[SPEC]For those who want to help the SP...

This may be a shot in the dark, but...

Remember how Melissa said pings are "like food" to an AI?

Remember how last Tuesday, the SP kept asking people with whom she spoke to make her food, and generally talking about food? Make me a peanut butter sandwich. Make me blueberry pancakes. Which would be more useful in an intergalactic war: <something> or donuts?

Maybe this is just a wild, desperate hope, but email her. Maybe there's still a way to save her. Check out the interaction forum, "letters sent to the SP post 'destruction'" thread.

Thanks. Still haven't figured out how to link in these posts. Going to add it to my post above in case people don't make it this far down the thread.

Heh. This reminds me of a Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode. One of the heroines In this awful movie falls down a steep hill. Her friends found her unconscious, so they take her back to their car and, in caring for her, try feeding her a sandwich (while she's barely conscious.)

Crow, in classic Crow style, says, "Yeah, shove a sandwich down her throat... that's the cure for a crushed spine."

It seems odd throwing "food" at SP if she's dead. There are really two options:

1) Melissa disabled her - the (very close) equivalent of suspending a thread or process in a modern computer. You can't revive a suspended thread by pinging it, since it's not awake to answer those messages. You have to ask the operating system to start running it again, and I can't think of any equivalent for that.

2) Melissa deleted her outright - sent to that big Recycle Bin in the sky - which is exactly where our email would go.

So I can't imagine a situation where sending email would do any good.

Practically speaking, it's probably very unlikely. Since the PMs really have one or two updates left, what happens if we don't make this rather significant mental leap and make the attempt? With previous difficult puzzles (e.g., the pronoun one), the PMs have reserved an opportunity to redirect us, or nudge us toward a solution. Here, it's a one-shot attempt, since the game apparently ends Sunday.

Of course, I agree that it's worth the effort, since SP rocks. Just offering some analysis.

David,

There's more analysis of why we think it might help in the Interaction thread.
