OK well the best thing I can do here to start off this thread is point everyone to richchestmat's excellent webpage which sums up everything that's happened with the London Axon so far.

So goto http://www.sealpup.plus.com/ilovebees/ and bookmark it!

Also, if the Axon isn't enhottenated or moved tonight, Fi & I will be in London tomorrow evening. I will be in the Costas at the corner of Wardour Street and Shaftesbury Avenue at 5pm, so can I ask that if anyone else feels they can make it for the Axon firing on Saturday, please post in this thread so that we have an idea of how many people might be coming along (and so all that info is in the same place). Also, if anyone who is coming has a GPS locating device, please bring it with you (and mention that fact in your post!) I'm beginning to think it would help us substantially (given the varied points the GPS coordinates are giving via the mapping websites). Anyway...

Here's hoping that all won't be necessary, and it gets enhottenated tonight *touch wood*.

I wasn't able to attend and I'm not sure when I can again but I will do all I can otherwise.

First thing I want to know is if anyone proved it wasn't the Slug & Lettuce on Wardour Street. How did I get that spot? Well I found the latitude longitude cursor mode on Mapinfo. The first image (after the Firefox banner) is a screenshot to show how carefully I placed the new GPS marker.
You may remember that a GIS collegue of mine also placed the spot near there.

If this runs til Monday I can go back and choose from more LxL modes.

Zooming out places it on 80-82 and according to both the street sensation website and S&L's own site that is the building under the marker. It's worth at least one body to check out and if by chance the phone is on the left wall then I might well be strutting about like a tomcat.

could this be an issue with the map projections? depending on how the gps location was found and taken, the projection may be off. The lat/long may have been taken useing either a US or European projection. This could cause considerable shifting of the point if you dont use the correct projection for your map. I cant find any london road line data at the moment so i cant play around with it myself. if you or your GIS friend know of any data available let me know and i can take a crack at it on my end.

Thought I'd be able to make Friday but in the end I chose to socialise with my actual friends instead of a recalcitrant AI. Therefore the list of possible phones remains unchanged from Wednesday I believe.

I'm going to be in town anyway today so I'll be at Costa sometime before six. Sadly I don't have a GPS system nor do I know where I can get one so all I'll be bringing is my sparkling personality.

Some numbers:

0800 661610 is for BT payphones. Non-BT lines may have to prefix it with 0800 800. They probably will tell you if a payphone can accept calls or not and they may tell you if there is a phone near to a location.

0207 437 1400 is for the Slug & Lettuce, as was mentioned before.

I will not be coming today as I could not secure a GPS unit. If any of you feel like going early and purchasing a GPS unit, there are several available at NavCity/RIA Technologies (almost right around the corner) for less than �100. So if anyone was planning to get a GPS unit for some other reason...
