Jeez. Since I brought up this whole copying the DVDs thing, I think I should at least say that, as I understand it, the DVD is a compilation. That's what was stated in Melissa's post. Having it in DVD form would be slightly less problematic than on 3-4 regular CDs.

Anyway - if it's more than that (and the more I think about it, the more this sounds plausible to me), then do not copy the darn thing. It's for crewmembers, or at least people with the knowledge and capability to get to a drop off point with the passcode, and as such should stay with them. The PMs have the right to distribute their gifts as they see fit.

I merely brought the possibility up thinking it was 1. only a compilation and 2. it would ease the burden on Dana and the PMs to get this out to the players that through lack of opportunity (but not wanting), were not able to participate directly in the ARG. I withdraw the suggestion as there is little to no way to guarantee that such a thing wouldn't be mis-used - and that is the last thing that I want.

I hate myself

Ive been posting again and again in here but wut the hell +1 post count here i come! Anyway yeah dont burn the dvd thats bad. Unless the PM's are like sorry but we dont got u covered we have none left we hate you ur a non bee person etc.......still dont guys. I really want the dvd so i can show my friends what they have been missing out on. I was actually debating whether to put the .wavs on my ipod desperate to show people the coolness that were the ilovebees wavs. Now that the dvds are existant i can show people wut ive been following since July 28th when i favorited this site (i just checked lol) I did the same thing with redvsblue.com if anyone here knows that wonderful site. Anyway its the journey and i do want something to remind me of when i sat by my computer one summer day watching axons go hot when the countdown went to zero. I want something to tell me it was real....not just a shell of the f'ed up website that showed me theres more then meets the eye here. Hopefully i will and if not, I have my time reading ur posts here. Maybe that will be enough....

about copying

I know that the idea of copying has been discussed and withdrawn. I am posting this as a simplistic explanation of why making the copies violates copyright law.

This is the basic thing: the copyright holder (whoever that is in this game, but not us) has the exclusive right to reproduce or copy the work in fixed form.

I can see how this is confusing. We are talking about a compilation of waves that are available to us on the site for free. They seem to be sitting there waiting to be compiled, copied and given to our friends. But, alas, they are not.

These appearances are misleading. Copying the waves or the DVD compilation of the waves is the exclusive right of the copyright holder. Putting the waves on a public site for free does not affect that right. So, making copies is a violation.

(You may be confused too, by the idea of a compilation copyright? Putting the waves into a compilation doesn't affect the copyright holder's exclusive right to reproduce the waves. )

Just a note to add to what Rose said:

While what you have said is true for most countries (most notably all those holding to the Berne Convention), I believe some countries have copyright laws which allow free copying.

There are certainly some countries that allow legal downloading of copyrighted materials (Canada explicitly, and America implicitly - which is why copyright infringement suits are only taken out against people who have uploaded copyright material without the primary copyright holder's permission).

There is also the fact that we don't know yet how the compilation is being copyrighted. If it is instead "copylefted" or placed under the Creative Commons licence then copying for non-profitable use is actually encouraged Smile
(And as this is effectively part-advertising on the part of the PMs to encourage Halo2 and XBox purchases it may very well be)

So, basically all I'm saying is: We don't know if copying of the DVD compilation is allowed until the PMs tell us Very Happy So we shouldn't all be jumping the gun here, until we know exactly what the DVD is...

(BTW Rose - I for one add my support to your statement about not judging people by contribution. There are many here (like me Wink) who have only started into ARGs... and acting with some form of exclusivity might only scare/chase away people who may be potentially wonderful community members in the future.)

Well im a canadain as well, been involved in the game since about the beginning of august. Would like nothing more than to have one of the dvd's. I sent dana a note, i dont even expect a reply but i figured i wouldnt get anywhere if i didnt try.

Quote:
Dear Dana:

I have been a follower of the I Love Bees phenomenon from shortly after the beginning of stage two. I was engrossed in the content that was given to us and was daily involved in checking for updates and the solving of puzzles. I have sent you one email before, approx. August 16-17 in somewhat of a poetic form. Unfortunately, due to my location, there were no means for me to reach any of the axons (the nearest one would have been a ten hour journey). The whole ordeal, since the beginning, has been frustrating due to my location and lack of companions in more ideal locations. Nothing more would I like then to join one of the training sessions, even stand at the door, peeking at what is going on. I realize that my being trained on-site is unrealistic at this point, in fact if I left now, I would not make it on time, so I would like nothing more than to obtain a copy of the communications log. I appreciate how kind and patient you have been and respect the fact that I am certainly not on the top of the priority list right now. Please process this request and respond to it. Thank you for your time.

I know she said to wait till after the training sessions. but my computer was being screwy and i thought that if i didnt send it, it might never get sent.

Gestas,

While I agree with you in spirit, my response (and I won't speak for anyone else who has commented for or against my position) is positioned solely against piracy and the fact that people are already talking about putting up bittorrants and ripping the DVD without any respect to the copyrights.

In the United States (where this material was created and primarily distributed), Copyright is assumed unless specifically declined by some act. (Be it outright saying "This is copyleft or public domain" or more subtly by failing to protect ones copyright.)

If the PMs or creators of this work give this work to the public domain or provide a copyleft, then I'm all for distributing it to anyone who wants it.

Until such time as that can be ascertained one way or another, I will continue to suggest that the discussion should be put on hold or terminated. We'll know tomorrow night, it's really not that much to ask.

Mazian - Agreed.

I was just being a little ornery Wink

Myself - I've sent an email to the PMs via Dana, but as I've been lurking the entire time and I'm in NZ I don't expect a reply (but you never know unless you try).

I'm just happy that this was such a good ARG to learn on. It really piqued my interest in ARGs in general (I'd heard of The Beast back before AI but didn't get involved), and I'm definitely going to be hanging around for whatever comes next on this forum.

So the way I see it - even just watching from the sidelines it was a great experience, and from next year I expect to be a little more involved (a thesis to get out of the way in the next few months).

But - I and everyone else outside the country demand some details on the training missions when you all get back

*Sigh*

ILB has helped me through one hell of a time.
I put the finishing touches on my play while Melissa went Wide Awake and Physical.
I moved to a new city while Jersey was getting audited.
While I was scrambling to make my first ever tech writing deadline, Rani was puzzling over a hobo's clean ankles.
And when I had my first Halloween in my own house, my friends in the future saved the world...maybe.

In the middle of all this, I haven't managed to pick up a single axon since phase 3 and that bugs me to no end. Never even got to talk to the Princess, although listening to her was one of the highlights of my week. I guess I'll have to get more involved next time around. *sad* ;_:

Copyleft? LOL. Now that's a term I haven't heard before. Nice one, Mazian.

"Upon arrival," we were told, "the Bee Keepers will find their way to a theater where they will receive a special commemorative DVD (and a collector's lanyard) as well as a special chapter of the ILB game specifically created for the event."

This was something i read in a Times Article. Note the "special chapter". I hate the fact that I'm missing out on the story because i live in Sweden. My only hope is that they make it public soon enough, but I don't count on it.[/b]

Dictionary.com / Copyleft Looks like the term originated in April of 95, and is related to the GNU public license, which was created in 94.

damn, I'm getting "mature" Shocked

Look, I have absolutely no way of getting to a location and although I never registered as a crewmember, I was working with friends on this puzzle since the first day the trailer became available. I don't see why I should miss out on this amazing end to the game just because you're snooty and arrogant and don't feel I have the right to enjoy it if I can't reach a location!

If someone is able to rip the DVD and perhaps make a bit torrent file of it, many of us beekeepers would be able to enjoy it also. If the PM's have some awkward problem with us doing that, I don't really know what to say. I would hope they'd understand that hooking people to a story means that if some of us can't be included in the finale, we'll do everything we can to be a part of it.

Oh good lord. For the last time, go back to ILB's main page, click on Dana's link and follow her directions. Anyone who wants a DVD should be able to get one! Just follow the rules!
