Who likes a spoonful of [Spec] with a rebuttal?

Slight warning: long post with many possible spoilers.

Let us not discount the possibility that the UNSC AI's are also skilled programmers as well as skilled programs. It has been illustrated in the books that they (and at least also Dr. Halsey) have access to their own core programming code, and can make changes to such. Perhaps they manually went through the motions of creating a programming process that mimics some of their functions in whatever capacity needed? Perhaps they created a runtime process that simply made a pathway that would let them manifest their greater personalities in different, isolated areas.

All this might've been a part of Cortana's capabilities before gaining access to the Covenant AI Copying Code (CACC for short), which might simply augment her ability to do much the same things. It's my personal thinking that both Covenant and UNSC AI's were developed along divergent lines, but ended up much the same. A dissimilar creation leads to a semi-congruent conclusion if you will. Cortana herself remarked upon the similarities between herself and her Covenant adversary, even as she dissected/destroyed him on the Ascendant Justice. The technology itself might speak of an intangible connection to the wisdom of the Forerunners (something that drives both the books and the games in many places, especially where the artifacts & Halo are concerned). The Covenant, using their active search for the Forerunners leavings might've found some more advances in the lines of Smart AI's, "creating" them in another fashion than the Humans. Nonetheless, the fact remains: the Neural Imprinting process of the humans, and whatever creation process used by the covenant, both produce results which are startlingly similar.

[Spec]Perhaps the covenant first came upon the discovery of AI's when encountering a long-rampant Forerunner AI, like 343 Guilty Spark. Then, to use the technology as their own, they activate the copying program to prolong the operational lifetime of their AI's, since they don't possess the knowledge to create new ones.[/Spec]

Cortana used the technology to create wholly different selves of herself, new parts that were no longer a part of the greater whole. Perhaps the Covvie/Forerunner technology of AI-copying had something to do with the fracturing (and later, reunification) of Melissa upon her interaction with the Artifact, but i don't think such changes were the direct result of the Flea.

Edit:
Quote:
BeeNetter: Durga is possibly in the early stages of Rampancy. Rampant AIs can do things that sane AIs can't do. Possibly including copying themselves.

Very good [Spec] there! Maybe the capability of AI copying originated with the long-rampant Forerunner AI's?

In First Strike (spoiler warning)--prior to Cortana's discovery of the Covie copy routine, when Cortana and MC first get aboard Ascendant Justice she is first physically dumped (data chip) from the longsword ship to the MJOLNIR armor. Then from the armor to a data port in the Ascendant Justice, leaving MC 'alone'. If she had the ability to copy duplicates or partial duplicates of herself (with specific programs relevant to the task of the copy) at this point, it would have been logical to do so. Rather than risk having the original Cortana stranded in the alien system, it would have been better to drop a dupe in the system and have her stay with MC--but that wasn't an option at this point.

The wavs are very specific in telling us that Durga COPIES her primary data structure into the Chawla base net and we're sure there's two Durga's from Jan's 'Durga inside/outside' comment. She doesn't just move from outside to inside, she's actually occupying two different spaces (virtually of course). We don't see this anywhere in Haloverse until we're introduced to the Covie copy routine in First Strike...

Congrats! Laughing

Though it may sound somewhat trite in retrospect, i'd like to point out that i was discussing the possibility of the Flea granting Melissa/Durga acess to the Covenant AI copying protocols, not whether or not the Flea was indeed covenant. In regaurds to the most recent sound bytes, the latter argument is certainly a moot point now.

Another "point of attack" so to speak, might be that Durga wouldn't have had acess to the Flea before her reunification with Melissa and the SP.
