Heh, since I feel like I spun this thread in a negative direction from the beginning, let me just say that I am really happy about the game as a whole. The disk distribution was problematic, but jimmymuffins aside, maybe this will introduce some good people to ARGs who would never have seen them otherwise.

Ultimitly it boils down to expectations. I'm going to sleep now.

BTW: The Goddess Squad lived up to their names in both beauty and intelligence. If any of them are still eligible, i suggest any intrested men start courting now. Hot chicks that can think for themselves and kick ass in Halo are a rare commodity.

Phaedra, reporting in...

I'm going to get my criticisms out of the way first, so I can end on the happy note that the evening represented for me.

First, we in the Midwest get no love. Are you reading this, PMs? The Microsoft rep suggested that you do read the forums, so I just want to say that I'm disappointed that you could send representatives (of the PMs, not Microsoft) to NYC, San Francisco, and from what I gather, Dallas, but not here.

Chuck, the Microsoft man, said that the Chicago event had the largest turnout. We had the most active training event thread. We have been just as active and faithful as anyone else. So why were we left out? Was it really logistically impossible to send a PM to Chicago?

Second, the event *was* very poorly organized. The details as to why have been hashed over already, so I'll leave it at that.

Third, I was a little offended by the attitudes of some of the non-ILB Halo fans there. They seemed to think that having played the ARG made us less than them. They seemed to feel that they were the true fans, since they had come for Halo 2, and we were "just there for the bees stuff."

If it hadn't been for this, I would have been less annoyed by the way they decided to handle the raffle. After an unsuccessful experiment with the tickets they handed out, they decided to simply pick names from the list to allow people to play, thus excluding many of the non-ILB gamers. I feel that they should have stuck with the tickets to allow everyone who showed up at least a chance that they might get to play, but done the raffle off the list.

Oh well.

On to happier things.

Despite the sweltering heat, it was fun getting to meet people in line and finally put some names with faces. We, the Goddess Squad, and I think probably the entire Goddess Army, felt the love from our fellow beekeepers even if we didn't feel it from the PMs. It's funny how some people are exactly as you've pictured them, and others surprise you.

Angelo, everyone, despite having traveled for an insane amount of hours from the far reaches of the US, is hot. (You should have been posting a *lot* more pictures of yourself, man.) Having a cell phone glued to the side of his head only added to it, I assure you. ROBOGriff was also delightful to the eyes, with a million-megawatt smile. Spie was adorable as well. Krystyn was more charming and funny in person than I could have foreseen (and she stuck it!), and Hyacinthe was sweeter, and KirstenS and her new husband were a simply adorable couple. Atdt was prepared for just about everything (he brought lovely little bee badges for the Goddess Army, which we appreciated greatly!) There are far too many people for me to comment on everyone, but we were quite the crowd.

You are a bunch of beautiful, gracious individuals, and I'm honored to have had the chance to meet you.

Halo 2 was beautiful and amazing. Durga's final message was very touching. We had great fun chanting and yelling bees-related things. Many people took pictures (and I'm sure I have the Red Eyes of Death in all of them...)

The officials seemed rather disconcerted when we proved more interested in the puzzle than Halo 2 -- we solved it first, folks...we figured out that it was "Apocalypso" in about 20 minutes once we started working on it...we just trusted that it would be a .wav page like all the others. But the PMs apparently thought it would be funny to make it .html. Regardless, we solved it, without Google.

Kali and I reaped the reward of being female, but neither of us took advantage of it. She was up front taking pictures of her boyfriend, who had gotten called to play. One of the officials asked her if she was waiting to play. She declined, not wanting to cheat her way in, but later got picked randomly. Later, I went up to watch the local multiplayer on the small screen, and one of them asked me the same thing. I also declined. Silly officials.

There were five Halo 2 LE/Live subscription/headset packages raffled off. ROBOGriff won one of them, so at least we did have ONE beekeeper win.

Several people vouched for me, inducing the officials to give me a stack of DVDs, which despite my predictions will now go into the lottery, along with a few other things people have offered up. There was no swag besides the lanyards and the DVDs.

We managed to get Chuck, the head Microsoft guy there, to come to Denny's with us afterwards. (I think he must have secretly been glad that there were no PMs...he got instant quasi-celebrity status.) We had a great time talking to him. Next to our giant crowd was a small crowd of boys at a table. They asked us what we'd been doing. Atdt (I think...it was getting late) showed them his Halo 2 Crewmember Since 2004 tag. They replied, "We hate you." We became insufferably smug.

Kali and I, unfortunately, had to head out LONG before we wanted to. But thank you, everyone, for an incredible evening. My only real regret is that, since there were SO many people there, and so much going on, I didn't really get to talk to any of you in depth. But hey, we still have the forum. Smile

Re: Phaedra, reporting in...

Phaedra has commented on the Chicago experience more eloquently than I ever could, and I agree with everything she said. However, I do need to comment on this:

If there ever was a time I wished I wasn't married for a nanosecond, this was it. I had no idea that so many of you were so droolworthy. The Chicago beekeeper crew certainly spit in the eye of the video game stereotype!

Returning and leaving

Okay, that sound is my voice box cracking. Whooping up Halo 2 in a movie theater will do that to you, I guess. Smile

It's about five hours there and five hours back, so I hope you don't mind I chose to sleep before writing. Got there and there's a group of kids wandering, wondering - I called out the Universal Geek Relay Code and, recieving a ping back, joined them in peering into the Gameworks, then going to the theater.

I should mention right at this point what a lot of ARG'ers found out that night: when it came to rank and miilitary status, I didn't have to lie to Melissa much. Wink I chose as uniform of the day Service Uniform "C" with the service sweater option. I *wanted* to take it off in the lobby halfway through the waiting period, but one of the two ribbons on my ribbon bar fell off, so I had to keep it on the whole time. Luckily, the theater was nicely air-conditioned.

Inside, there was some confusion - first, the front line was all three items (printout of confirmation letter, lanyard from downstairs, and knowing you were on Dana's list); later, it became one of the three. That meant I had to disconnect from two of the Chicago crew who'd brought their GBA SP's, but we got in a few rounds on Mario Kart Advance first.

Finding them once inside, of course, led to the Chicago Crew up top by the projector. I shall now briefly note that the Goddess Army is hawt.

Common jokes involved Cortana's blooper (and our humble moderator, on the big Live-connected screen, did indeed "stick it"), mentions of the prepositions, and my constant use of the Flea's "fail", partly due to people and tickets not showing up when called out.

After using the tickets once for selecting contestants, they went to calling out names the second time. This worked much better for selecting the combatants, and not just because I GOT CALLED OUT FOR THE SECOND RUN. Worshippy My gameplay was Team Slayer to 50 on a map with the sword and a rocket launcher each under a waterfall. You'll have a bit of getting used to with the sword, but it does wonders, such as the *SMACKDOWN* one of the Chicago Live players put on a vehicle with it. I, myself, preferred the shotgun, with a Triple Kill at one point. I play at dangerous close quarters, you see. Smile My match was pink vs. red, and our pink team (once we figured out what teams we were on) won.

Then, we got to listen to some audio clips, and one of them was a code. At that point, I simply turned around and pointed to Angelo, who hit up Buzzkill. It should be noted that we were joking about kidnapping Chuck Blevens and holding him hostage until he got us the code, ignoring as we did so the X-Boxes and copies of Halo 2 in his vehicle.

I'd also like to take a moment and point out that Robogriff is a lucky ^*(&#^)!^. We love him anyway. Smile

After watching and taking part in the kill-fests, we went down to Mr. Blevens, thanked him for the fun, and invited him out with us to Denny's, who found themselves suddenly hosting almost thirty people. While there, we basically sat down and listened to Mr. Blevens talk about his role on the marketing side of things. He does know Halo 2 spoilers, and won't say them. He knew just about as much as we did of the puzzle stuff. (HEY, PM'S! WE WORKED ON THE PUZZLE *IN THE THEATER*! VISIT US NEXT TIME! Smile ) We of course paid for his meal, and had a good time talking and listening.

After a few goodbye pictures, along with actual goodbyes (and a large line for paying), we went off on our separate ways, my final words there being "NO MORE PAYPHONES!"

Everyone, it was a pleasure meeting you. Perhaps, if fate and some evil PM's should conspire, we may meet again. Until then, this Sergeant of Marines has a Marine Corps Ball weekend to get to.

I am still so mental exhausted from yesterday night, so here we go:

After we got into the theater, the Halo 2 goodness started and I was lucky enough the get my ticket drawn to play early. It was a blast. Then I realized there was a puzzle to solve!

Mazian and I got the players on the big screen to ask the different locations what their code word was. Then we handed them off to Darkforge, knowing this info was in the right hands. Wink

But the real fun came afterwards. I must say that I didn't expect the PMs to show up in SF, and I was caught completely unprepared. I got to chat with Kristen, the VA for Melissa/Durga/SP during the event. I asked her what it was like when the first live calls started going out, she said it was crazy. I finally found out why I got stone walled at my first live call: she needed a diet coke! Laughing Later that night I was talking with Stitch when Elan Lee introduces himself to me. A stand up guy. We chatted for a little bit, then all the ARGers performed a mass exodus to Mel's for some late dinner.

At dinner Kiyash was talking about all the phone scouting, etc. Imagine you are going on business trips all over the country but you can't tell anyone why. He said it was fun, but a bit frustrating at times. At this juncture, I was totally exhuasted from all the fun, and reluctantly made my rounds and took off for home.

Overall an absolutely amazing, once in a lifetime experience. I am in awe at the raw creative talent that was tapped to make this happen. To the PMs, my hat goes off to you. Thank you.

While I don't condone being rude to anyone, I think you're being a bit hard on non-ILB Halo fans.

The reason behind what you experienced is the cause of the only flaw in ILB's concept - it attracted two widely different groups of people, and convinced both those groups of people that it was something right up their alley.

I'm not saying that attracting ARGers to ILB was a mistake. The flaw was in being ambiguous enough, early on in the game, that two groups immediately began 'playing' the game, for different reasons.

Hell, I remember very early on that ARG people were convinced that this had nothing to do with Halo. Or that it would go on longer than Halo 2. Etc. etc. As someone with a more Bungie-centric view, I strongly disagreed.

To a Halo 2 fan at the Training Thing, they saw a bunch of people talking about the 'bee thing'. They don't get why they should even be here, since ILB was about Halo 2 all this time.

To an ARG/ILB fan at the Training Thing, they saw a bunch of people who hadn't done an ounce of work on ILB, and are now reaping the rewards of their own hard work.

And the thing is - neither of these groups are wrong.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there was never a chance that something ILB-Only would actually be ILB-Only. By its nature, something ILB-only will attract people who are only into Halo 2. What you see as ILB-only is, to them, Halo 2 stuff.

edit: edited for clarification.

If i hadnt have hung out with fellow beekeepers the entire time, i would have deemed the trip totally not worth it.... but you guys made the trip awesome. I am so glad i went, and got to meet all of you. It was cool to see everyone (especially the Goddess Army ^^) and talk to them in person. (extra post of mine: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7889)

hope everyone had as much fun as i did!

double post:

I just got home, to South Carolina, from the NYC training event.

I had a blast personally. My plane arrived in NYC at 4pm, I found my way outside, and to a cab...got to my hotel, changed into my ILB gear (which seemed to be a big hit in NYC, everyone taking pics of me, even the camera guy from (xbox.com?) ...

Back to the chain of events..I changed into my gear, and wanted to make sure I could find the theater..So I head towards it, low-and-behold there are people already in line at like 5:15. I'm like "oh my god" .. so i rush to get some pizza at the pizza place i planned on eating at (Pi33a), then i rushed back to get in line. I was, probably #20 in line after going to eat. It took forever, but they finally hand us lanyards and start letting us in..

After more waiting, and seemingly waiting for the line to move, so that we could wait again, we finally got our DVDs. There didn't seem to be any "noob" problems like they had in another city..Everyone knew what the DVD was and what to expect as far as I could tell.

After behind told 10 more minutes, we waited probably another 30 minutes and finally got let into the theater. I was in the 2nd row in the middle-to-right-side. When I was waiting for my turn, it was me and another guy next. I figured it was certain we would be playing on the big screen..but no, he skips us two and tells us to go play on the little screens, and the two people behind us get to go play. Damn, i would have owned so much ass too! oh well..i played 1 on 1..got off too a big jump start winning easily..then i started getting side-tracked, wanting to watch the big screen. Slowly he got closer and closer and beat me like 9-8 i think it was.

I stayed until they basically kicked us out..Went to my hotel, slept..woke up..flew home..now im on here typing. lol

Was it worth the 180$ plane ticket, $110 hotel ticket, and two $30 taxi bills, totally $350. Maybe not, but I still had a helluva a lot of fun, rode on my first airplane/aircraft, went the farthest from home i've ever been..and alone at that..played halo 2, watched halo 2 a lot, had fun cheering on others playing! It was such a blast. So, no it wasn't worth $350 bucks, however, if i could go back in time knowing the outcome and change my decision, i would not change it..i'm happy i went.

South Carolina represented baby!
