I think it is likely that people can fly into New York for about the same cost as to Chicago or Midway. (check out the Jet Blue fares).

Just checked - Jet Blue doesn't fly out of Chicago, or anywhere in the Midwest for that matter Sad Looks like they only fly mostly out of the East coast cities and west coast cities.

What's the best airport to fly into New York? I'm trying to price some costs from Milw/Chicago. Looks to be about $250+ depending on where you fly to in NY.

From what it looks like in the poll, it seems to make the most sense to plan the next two ARGFests - New York (june) and then Chicago (fall?).

Somebody brought up in chat that we could start a sort of pattern for the ARGFests similar to how they've already been planned - Florida (southeast), Las Vegas (southwest), Vancouver (northwest), New York (northeast), Chicago (midwest) and then Europe and then we start over. Or was Las Vegas first and Florida second? I can't remember. Obviously, they wouldn't always be in those cities, but the cities can be voted on in each region. Anyway, I think this would work out to be the fairest for the most people - because honestly not everyone can travel to New York or Chicago or wherever no matter how cheap the rates are. Smile

<geek>too bad Indianapolis in April wasn't a choice since I'll probably be going to the Star Wars Celebration! </geek>

You probably won't have a choice, LaGuardia handles most of the domestic flights, but check around, you might be able to get a better deal if you fly into Newark, and it's about as easy to get to the city from there as LaG or Kennedy.

Don't be tempted to fly into Islip, even if it looks like you're getting the best deal. You'll spend so much getting into the city from there, it's not worth the extra 4 hours trip (includes sitting around Islip waiting for a bus or train).

Use a ranked voting method, please

With all due respect, this is not one of the polls where we want to use a winner-take-all method to pick the destination. We want to pick the destination that has the most overall support. To find out which destination has the most support, we have to vote by ranking our preference for each destination. I propose that we restart the poll with all of the destinations proposed this time and last time, and operate the poll under the Condorcet method. In case this board doesn't already have the MOD for Condorcet voting, it can be found here:

http://www.masquilier.org/libre/phpbb/

That web page also has links that explains what the Condorcet method is all about. At the end of the Condorcet poll, we will have a clear idea which destination is most preferred by everyone.

Don't spread your hippie ways online as well!! Wink

Just some alternative thoughts, How about Atlanta?
It's close to me (selfish reason)
It's a Delta Hub
There's plenty of hotel space left over from the Olympics
Pretty easy to reach from the mid-west and East (sorry Left coast)

Another thought, how about one of those 3 day curises? It wouldn't matter what port we left from and I may be able to arrange a nice group rate (I'm a part time travel agent).

EDIT: BTW: wouldn't it HAVE to be a winner takes all? Otherwise all of us would not be in the same location. Just kidding. I know what you are trying to say.... Hippie.

Atlanta was in the last poll, but Chicago and DC were left out.

hey

For those who fly into Newark (assuming this happens in NYC, anyway, as I hope it does) I will have a townhouse about 5 miles away from the airport and can host several people - just PM me if it becomes appropriate and when the time draws nearer.

It's about 1 mile from Staten Island (the southern part of NYC) and overall quite close to Manhattan.

Ok, please bear with me.... I was talking to a fellow ARGer who said maybe I should post my ideas....so here goes:

See, I really want it in NYC, if for nothing else, the selfish reason of "I could meet people, and it's only 2 hours away, so I could get there".

Someone suggested a whole list of things to do, I think with the attitude of "people choose what they want to do and then meet up later". Well, I can go to NYC whenever I want, and do whatever I want, {provided I have the money}, so why am I making a special trip? It's to meet people who I share a common interest with. People who I may or may not have talked to online, teamed with to reach a goal, competed with over that goal... If I'm not going to be with these people, why go?

I'd be more than content with sitting at the imagine circle & strawberry fields for a while in central park just to picnic out.... maybe go see a show if people want to go see a show.... but if people are getting together for a fest, well, shouldn't there be something fest like? Something organized, even if just for one night. Maybe we could have "tickets" something as cheap as possible, but well worth it. Rent a hall for one evening, have a dinner. Maybe have a "panel discussion" with some PMs. I know some of the PMs of UH are going to be there, but how about extending invites to PMs of other games recently {or not so recently} played? Maybe we can have the first annual "ARG Awards", a semi-joke event of people's choice - start the voting here, on the forums, or a secure voting site. Vote about "who was the best…{fill in category here"}, or best PMs, and give silly prizes.... have a mixer of some sort, maybe get some sponsors to pitch in {halo 2 would not be where it is without the ARG community, maybe MAYBE, we can get SOMETHING}. I have no problems at all with saying "welcome to the city, go out and sight see, here are some suggestions" But I am just really of the opinion that if we want to try to become something official, even in the tiniest form, maybe we should do something official. I think a "gamer" party one night, with optional LAN capabilities, as well as maybe a place for table tops {dice AND cards}. Maybe there is a table top game you've never played and always wanted to, well come try out new games!

And for someone coming in for a weekend of fun in the Big Apple, I would hope that the reason for coming is to meet your fellow ARGers more than just sightseeing, and maybe 5 hours Saturday evening would not ruin the trip.

At the Orlando Fest, we did what you're suggesting - people went out and sight-seed (sight-saw?) during the day, then gathered for dinner/drinkery/fellowship in the evenings.

And the hosts (locals) plan some fun ARG-like activity.

In Las Vegas vpisteve had a pre-ARGfest puzzle online (for us to figure out where the meet/greet/dinner/live game would happen) and then a live puzzle/scavenger hunt that led us to the dinner. During the festocon we had a little meet/greet w/ drinks the night before at Bellagio, and after dinner some went to the Star Trek Experience (and dessert).

In Orlando, imbri & her team had a puzzle-like scavenger hunt (requiring pictures) over Universal CityWalk *during beerfest* with the answer leading us to the drinkering (and most followed others to another local for dinner afterwards). Many met up at Universal Studios during the day for sightseeing. And on another night some went to Disney Downtown for social hour and comedy.

Plenty of potential for NY activities.

wow.. that's uhm... wow. a lot of drinking. I mean, not a lot... but it seems like the main feature of each event was meeting to drink. what if someone is like, an AA person, and can't even be around the alchohol. like, are these restaurants, or bars? See, personally, i'm 4 foot 6, and very much uncomfy in bars. My duplicate liscense is a problem enough in my own state, let alone NYC. Not to mention, these days, there are a LOT of under age ARGers, if for nothing else {and please no one take offense} ILB brought in a large crowd, and i would hope they would be able to come and meet people just as much as a 21+. I mean, i don't mean to stir up trouble, and it's not about "my ideas vs your ideas" with "your" being anyone.... if my ideas are thrown out the window that's fine. I just don't want to see any group excluded because of "adult" planning, especially when we just went through a big "don't be agest" and "watch your lang because kids play too" and what not.

Heh, from my experience, the +21 crowd then just proceeds to buy drinks for the underage people, which certain of the underagers then forget to pay for, because they're horrible, horrible people. I'm sorry!

But that's terribly illegal and wrong, so I'm all for some non-drinkering activities for those of us without fake- ah, I mean, those of us under 21. Yes.
